Title: In todays climate, how far is £50 going to get me?
Post by: T11MNM on February 11, 2008, 06:59:15 PM
As the title suggests.

I travel ~200 miles a week combined motorway/town driving and would like to get a feel of the costs involved.

Thanks

Tim

£50 should get you 200 miles if you are efficient with the loud pedal!

The most I\'ve got with a stock FD is about 260miles, general around town it\'s about 180miles.

I\'d base it on:

£50 = 10.5gals

10.5gals @ 18mpg = about 190 perhaps 200 driven slowly.

Having had an FD for five years I never got to the magical 20mpg and I consider I drove with a light foot most of the time.

More like £70 or more if its proper empty. I used to put £65+ in FD\'s long before the recent fuel price hikes...the tanks are about 70 litres.

I use my FD as a daily drive costs me £65 a tank, which lasts approx 250 miles.

I put £70 in to brim full yesterday. Lasts 220 to 260 miles roughly depending on how much town work I have to do.

i did bristol and back from donny at average speed 80-90 mph there and back and it took me a tank and a quarter. expect half that if not less in town!

Dont get disheartened tho its worth the juice for the pleasure!!!

I get the same as Nik, roughly £72 for a full tank but don\'t really let it go below the quarter line, I like some reserve fuel... :Giggle
Don\'t worry about consumption!
I do find tho, that if I don\'t drive for a couple of weeks I\'m a bit richer, strange phenomenon!

Cheers guys, it\'s not a real worry just something that needs to be factored in when budgeting.

when you first buy an FD the fuel bill is like three times as much as it should be in the first few weeks at least cos you simply wont be able to get out of it!

With a sigle turbo you shoul find you\'re getting 22-26mpg.  If i\'m doing a mway run I get about 350 miles from a tank.

I think you have a problem then with your car, eating too much fuel.

Does anybody find that driving around town slow gives you the same mpg as thrashing the pants of it?

I do..roughly ten pounds = 35 miles and on the motorway 10 pounds 40 to 45 miles? This figure is the same on my 350bhp rex as it was on my standard rex. Im finding the mods have kept the economy the same. Any comments.

Also would be interested to know how much mpg the big turbo/uprated fuel system guys get for their cash anyone like to comment?

wow answered before i asked lol.
Your single is giving you better mpg than my twins with apexi?????

Is this the same across the board with you single guys. I understand if your motor is ported you will have dreadful economy. what kind of MPG would you expect with a street/ bridge ported single?

Yeah, kinda.  It does seem to use not much more :)

I usually fill up for around £66 and in summer would get 240miles of every day driving.  I used a tank in 2 long journeys and only drove with fuel in mind (which bored the cack out of me so dont reccomend :Laugh ) and I got an amazing mpg but thats all down to crusing along at 65 and trying to stay awake!

I heard the economical sweet spot was 84mph?

mine is on twins but soo rich!

i do have a theory about it using similar fuel if you thrash it.

thrashing it = heat = higher intake temp = less fuel injected = more mpg

i noticed this as short journeys are a joke in mine!

need it mapping. loads of popping too, which i\'ll miss tbh.

Depends on a number of factors - my ports are big but not huge but, due to the size of the turbo I\'m not continually in and out of boost everytime i touch the throttle.

It\'s when you build boost that the rex eats fuel so later boost or less responsiveness than a twin setup will be generally more economical.

On boost more power = more fuel so my rex running > 400bhp is less economical than when it was standard.

We spend more time on part throttle then we do booting it or we\'d all be dead or locked up :)

the less i put in the longer it lasts...
if the tanks brimming i dont care how much fuel i use.
but if i only fill it up to the quarter mark i can make it last for ages. not in the spirit of things i know but if im skint it works a treat!

i put 78quid in my rex and it did 225miles to london, no traffic at about 70-80mph, obviously i was doing 80 in the fields next to the m6 as its illigal to do that on the road itself

Mine\'s costing £1 per mile on stock twins with no boost. I think somethings wrong as it never used to use this much before. Im gonna try a new lambda and see how it goes

stock ports, stock injectors. Decatted only running 320bhp. Im hitting 100% injector duty and hitting fuel cut over 6000rpm. It was mapped by wgt 1 year ago so i hope the pfc has not lost it\'s map. Im thinking either leaky injector(s) or faulty lamba sensor. Anybody else got any suggestions?

sounds like if your hitting 100% injector duty your mapping has been changed. Thats gonna straight away bring you into high running costs lol. whats your injector duty on idle??

Just took it out for a spin and i hit 40% duty after crawling upto 3000rpm. It\'s about 20% at idle

Stop Starting the Rex also KILLS the fuel economy sotmhing rotton, i find if you can judge the lights and try to coast up to them and still be rolling when they go green you do get better econmy same with the roundabout. :Giggle

Im temtped to drive my car like a panzy this week and see what MPG i can get. :Laugh

you know yesterday i went for a little drive and worked out that you can get decent economy if you dont drive like an idiot. if you drive it nice n steady its not that bad.

i suppose if you had it mapped with a pfc with normal petrol and not 99\'ron it would make the car much cheaper to run.

One day though, im defo getting my FD put onto LPG, lets hope that they decide not to tax lpg too much!

Robbie, you sure it\'s not you TPS out of alignment? i.e. you\'re coasting along and it thinks you\'re at 50% throttle?

Or maybe the water temps are too low and it\'s putting more fuel in like a cold start?
Title: In todays climate, how far is £50 going to get me?

ive done some number crunching - on FUEL COSTS alone my rex costs 28p a mile.

the sum is - cost of a tank of fuel / how many miles you get.

in comparison my 99\' polo saloon TDI gets 500 miles to a tank and costs £40 to fill. this works out at only 8p per mile!

Well the car idles perfectly, drives perfectly without any bucking or hesitation and i\'ve never touched the TPS. The only thing i can think of right now is that the PFC has lost it\'s map and reset to base mod map. I adjusted the maximum revs on the comander to somthing like 2000rpm a couple weeks ago just messin about, but i set it back to what it was before.  It\'s running stinking rich, somebody at the ATM machine commented how rich it was running. Im gonna get the map emailed to me so i can reflash the ecu and see what happens

I\'m not far off you - running non-seq.

Sensible driving (keeping off boost, cruising at 70 on motorway) I\'ve seen just over 300 to a tank before.

All goes out the window when you feel like pushing it a little though, but so much more fun... :D
