Title: Buying an RX-7
Post by: N1CK on February 10, 2008, 07:31:04 PM
Hi guys, I\'m looking into buying my first RX-7. I need to know a few things first though as I don\'t know much about the car.

I have been to test drive this one today - http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/sales/350631.htm

What do you guys think?

I drove it and it seems ok but I have a few questions. There was a "knocking" from the alternator from cold which turned to a squeek when warm. The was an irregular noise, I was told it was the exhaust\'s butterfly valve, do RX7s have them? There was also a lot of water dripping from the boot when i opened it. Are these common problems? What else should I be looking out for?

Also is anyone from around Bradford that could come take a look with me?

I can\'t seem to find an RX7 listed on an internet comparison site, but don\'t know why. I thought the engine was a 1.3 rotary, but all the adds on the net say 2.6, why is this? Sorry it\'s a lot to ask at once!

Advice on any of the above is much appreciated!

thanks, Nick

Car looks nice enough, but you could do a lot better with your money, it seems way overpriced to me for a stock car with no rebuild history.

Do some research here before you jump in mate, you will regret not doing so in the long run.

Cheers mate, do the engines have to be rebuilt then after a certain time/milage? Is that what you mean by a rebuild history?

£8k for that!?

Sod that mate, have a browse around in the for sale section on here as there are a few tidy examples and more than likely been rebuilt

Not really, just when they fail.

A compression test can give you a rough idea at how strong the engine is.

There is the old rule that they go at 60k miles which is abit of a myth lol.......some last longer and others not so long.

Just have a look at loads and dont buy the first one you see, there is no rush as its a buyers market at the moment.

Regards

Matt

I\'ve got mine up for sale at the moment mate in the for sale section, bit more than the one your looking at there but i\'m opem to a sensible offer
Also it has been rebuilt recently and has a massive spec list including a single turbo conversion which equals more power & less to go wrong.
Heres a pic.

The car originally posted was the one that i test drove a week or so ago, personally wouldn\'t touch it with a barge poll but maybe they\'ve put right the long list of things that would have put me off.

Hi N1ck. That is a nice looking car. But we think that 8k is asking too much for it.

Search on here, there is a red standard one going for around 6 K I think.

N1ck, these cars are beautiful, and the performance is stunning, but they can be a real money pit if you buy one with seemingly small problems, that ending up being big problems to put right.

As others have said, keep looking around, dont buy the 1st one you see.

I\'ve seen the standard one. V.nice. What you guys think of buying imports? Should I steer clear? and why am i confused about the 1.3/2.6 thing?

Water dripping from boot lid means botched window seal or dodgy spoiler mounts, if the former, good luck finding an auto glazier who\'s willing to take it out to re-seal it. Either fault will fill the brake ABS ECU with water so it goes pop, which will be big money. Don\'t take a chance it\'s JUST alternator bearings or pulleys grumbling, could be maskin other problems. Alterantors are not exactly cheap, anyway.

Don\'t buy it if it ain\'t 100%, they\'re so cheap just now you\'re better off waiting for the right one and buying one already in the UK with good history. A fresh import without provenance is a russian roulette game! Trust me, I bought the first one I saw and it kicked me in the nuts so hard, so often, and so expensively I was almost glad when I wrote it off! Buy the right one first time, and never regret it!

Buy one from someone selling on this site. At least then you can get some history with the car.

Spend time researching the cars and what your buying into before jumping in with two feet. Otherwise you WILL buy a cheap pup that will cost you a fortune in the long run.

Search this forum, FDUK.org and also RX7Club.com for info on common faults and also what to look for when buying.

As i said, i test drove the car you went to see today. It cut out on me, i struggled to find gears and there was also a dreadful noise above 60 kph. The paint wasn\'t very good on the bodykit and headlights. It also struggled to start once warm.

They may have put all of those faults right during the week ofcourse.

Good luck, and make sure you use the search button and spend time reading before posting daft threads.

I didn\'t say this was a daft thread.

I\'m just as guilty as i\'m sure i posted a similar thread last week but that was more along the lines of detailing my day of looking at poor RX7\'s lol!

I\'m new around here, so won\'t start complaining too much.

N1ck, about the 1.3 / 2.6 thing.

This car has a WANKEL engine, and the capacity has always been a bar talking point. The 2 chambers where combustion takes place, are 654cc each. So, Mazda says it 654 x 2 , which equals 1308 cc.

Now you pit this car against any other 13OO in motorsport and it will cream the competition! So Motorsport bodies apply a formula to even it out - ( I Think they normally add 1/2 the capacity again).

Compared to a piston engine, the chambers fire more often per revolution, ( and therefore this engine has an excellent power/weight ratio ), but this advantage also gives us more emissions, so the DVLA see it as not a 1.3 but as a 2.6 (confusingly, earlier 1.3 Rotary was a 2354cc?).

So the insurance companies are confused, too, but most of them will have this car listed as a 2.6. Some of us have it registered with DVLA as a 1.3.

They are all the same engine, a 13B. In Mazda speak, its the 13B REW (twin turbo)

This is not a daft thread, and I hope my post isnt daft !
