Post by: syebba on February 07, 2008, 01:16:02 AM
Anyone know what import duty & taxes are payable on goods ordered from abroad?
Ive just ordered parts for mk1 RX7
New rear lenses/seals/wiper arms & blades/rear panel carpet etc
Goods cost £330,how much am i likely to be fleeced by customs?
cheers stuart....

Worst case roughly:

Duty 5-10% on cost of goods+shipping
then vat on the lot

Say goods inc shipping was 100 quid:

£100 x 10% duty = £110
£110 x Vat @ 17.5% = £129.25

Then may be a small admin/handling fee this end and any onward delivery charges.

As for fleecing - you pay it on entry yourself (or may be not if the paperworks scammed and/or your lucky) or its including in the price you buy the stuff from from a uk supplier...

expect to add approx 23% on top of total cost including shipping maybe plus handling charge

Im my experience there is no logic to it at all. Ive never paid import duty and have been charged anything from 3-17.5% VAT. The biggest con is that Parcel Farce stick their £20 on for doing very little.

Yeah, ive heard if the parcel is labelled gift or 2nd hand classic car parts, sometimes it will escape any taxes on entry to uk.

i\'ve got two parcels stuck in customs at the moment, waiting to hear the damage. How long does it usually take? do they open them?

It seems to be a different story for everyone!
Some people get charged more than others.
My parts got here from OZ within 7 days.
Parcelfarce wouldnt deliver goods until i\'d paid the vat.:Nono!

Ive no idea if customs open parcels, but they have to assess the value of the goods to tax them,so unless invoice is available, they probably do open them.
