Title: Lightening Flywheel
Post by: Matts-gen2 on February 06, 2008, 12:49:27 PM
Changing my gearbox fairly soon, and was considering either lightening the flywheel or changing for a lighter one.

Do ALL flywheels, (apart from factory) need to have acounterweight fitted to the other end.  Ive been informed you have to take the sump off to fit the weight.

For an EGi.

Yes all Rotary Flywheels will need some form of counterweight (often the stocker is replaced with the Auto version as its a Bolt on one), To take the Counter weight off you drop the Gearbox and undo the Big nut in the center of the Flywheel (which is a job for an Air gun if you have one handy) take care to not damage the rear Oil seal, may even be worth putting a new one in.

DO NOT!! Lighten the stock Flywheel, i know its been done and there are people that say its a good mod etc etc but Don\'t its not good to cut big chunks of a cast iron Flywheel (they have a tenancy to explode with high rpm/load)

I would suggest you download the Manual (or even buy the Haynes on for what it\'s worth) and check out exactly what your doing (don\'t undo any other Bolts you see on the back of the engine)
