Title: Help! Smoking from under my bonnet!
Post by: eyedee on February 28, 2004, 06:46:03 PM
I have just purchased a 92 Efini Twin Turbo.  I turned the RX7 over today and had it sitting at idle for about 3 minutes, the car rocked quite a bit from left to right as it warmed up, then I took it out to the road and cranked her up and within a minute or so started to see smoke belowing from the vents and the bonnet!  Looking from the front, on inspection, white/very light grey smoke is rising from the drivers side to the left below the top of the engine (what looks like a small manifold).  It smells like burning oil.  Then with the engine off there is a crackling sound like oil in a frying pan which slowly resided over a period of two minutes or so.  Please help!!!

hey mate,

unlucky, sounds horrible! I\'d get that to Reworx / Rotechnics asap - and I\'d get a tow truck to take it there! Sounds like you bought a dodgy one there mate.

what\'s the milage? where you get it from?

also did you notice it overheat?

Sounds totally shot mate, at a guess sounds like ya seals have gone due to where the smokes rising and the fact that it was rocking (running on one rotor?) Boiling is never good either!

I\'d brace for impact if I were you bud :(

It might not be as bad as you think, there are quite a few things that it could be, fairly minor items as well.

Early cars can suffer from oil leaks from the air outlet of the turbo pack. If you trace the air pipe back from the intercooler toward the left hand side of the engine, make sure the pipe that descends down (behind the air pump) is secure.

Crackling noise sounds like air bubbling in the coolant system. Make sure that the coolant bottle (the one with the dipstick) on the left is full.

Next look over by the battery and you\'ll see a small plastic brownish colour tank with a coolant cap on it. Fill it up with coolant.

Next go to the only remaining coolant cap (to the left of the alternator) and fill this up.

Good luck!

Regards

Max

Eyedee,  best you string yourself up now then mate:D

Nothing like inspiring confidence eh Andy:rollin

As Max has said there\'s alsorts thats it could be, even just oil spillage.
I wouldn\'t panick too much just yet, but I do think its best to get it checked out

Sorry took so long to reply.  Family member terminally ill in hospital so havent been thinkin about much else the past few days.
AndyP, the cars a 1992 R-Type Twin turbo imported from Japan only of couple a months back.  Its covered 53000 miles so its probably nearing rebuild anyway, which I knew when I bought it.  Its needed a bit of work and a few cosmetic ammendments to the interior, but I fell in love with it the second I saw it and had to have it!  When its sunny and Ive finished my interior rebuilld, I\'ll get some piccies done.  It ran the 300 mile journey from up North back to Surrey no problems at all (which was lucky!)
Out of interest, have any of you guys had the mile-o-meter changed from KMPH to MPH and has anyone had it de-limited?
Cheers for your advice Maxim.  I\'m gonna book the REX into Rotechnics for next week.  Only problem is how to get it there!  Im a little worried about the engine going bang if I drive the 20 miles there.  May have to join a recovery service! ;)
cheers

eyedee, when you get the speedo changed to mph that de-restricts it as well, the converters cost about £50-60, not sure how much someone would charge to fit it though.

There are some ads for these in the back of mags like Banzai, jap performance, etc. :)
