thanks people! i have not yet taking the dash out my car! i baught this one to use as a project so i dont have to drive around without a dash plus i want to wait till my car is painted white first before this go\'s in! i think it just need\'s one lot more of flocking then it will be done (i hope) the hard part is trying to get the glue level if you dont you get lil uneven parts!

removing the dash is a piece of poo easy :):wiggle

required: rachet set, brute strength, lol...

looking awesome steven, you got enough pods for gauges now? LOL would be funny if you drilled the classic extra 3 on the left side of the dash, have another 3 on the drivers a piller & another in the centre steering wheel collar! :eek:eek:
Title: flocking hard
Post by: ENVYD on February 05, 2008, 05:33:34 PM
well the flocking went a bit bad today on the second coat so jet washed it all off and i am going to start again! yeah i got enough now lol there the only ones i am going to have in the car, my lass even said to me i hope your not putting another 3 in the left side lol!
Title: flocking hard
Post by: S3TH on February 06, 2008, 10:07:31 AM
Keep at it bro, will be worth it in the end. BTW, when i looked into flocking the trimmer i spoke to mentioned flocking needs the fibres to be electrostatically charged to stand on ends, & then "shot" onto the resin.
How are you doing this in-house, or was this trimmer talking gibberish?
Title: flocking hard
Post by: ENVYD on February 06, 2008, 10:25:33 AM
nah thats the way you are ment to do it but you need a air tank and a flock gun with a real resin!

all i am doind is spraying the dash with loctite spray adhesive then i sprinkle the flocking over it! i will be doind 2-3 layers to make it look a bit better but the end result shud just be the same! i was looking to buy a flocking gun but a good one they start at like £100 so iw ill just give that a miss for now!
Title: flocking hard
Post by: Kevin on February 06, 2008, 10:35:15 AM
How will the dash wear over time?....

Say for example if somebody scuffed it getting in and out, or mucky hand prints, would it wipe clean or have to be re-flocked?  Are you doing the centre console and the doors aswell?
Title: flocking hard
Post by: ENVYD on February 06, 2008, 10:42:59 AM
the door cards are going the same yes and centre console and clock surround are going carbon! if you mean the part thats the same sort of stuff as the dash yeah thats going white aswell!

with some adhesive compounds you carnt wash but with the loctite spray adhesive you will be able to use upholstery cleaner!

lol yeah i know am right up ere! well the first layer went on ok its when i tryed to put the second layer on a droped something on it and pulled the flocking off befor it had set! andyou can not just put it back in shape! i will be doing more this week end hope i might get it finished and will get some piks up of it! am still going to keep look out for a cheep gun like! plus some of them you need a compressor and i dont have one of them YET lol
Title: flocking hard
Post by: S3TH on February 06, 2008, 03:35:55 PM
lol, was just chatting to James @ audioscape this lunch time since reading your thread inspired me on the flock idea again... was going to buy a gun & flock of him but he turned around and said flock will look good for a few months but after 6 it will look terrible and need re-doing....? i say we do a bit more research before getting stuck into so much effort!
Title: flocking hard
Post by: ENVYD on February 06, 2008, 04:21:34 PM
Nah it depends on how much abuse its had! I mean the inside of some jewellery box’s are flocked in green flocking and they last for years as long as you put enough on with good adhesion it should be ok!
Title: flocking hard
Post by: monkey-fd3s on February 06, 2008, 11:27:27 PM
My dash and front door cards are all fully flocked and have been like that for about 2 years.  They still look absolutely fine but are difficult to clean.

I had mine done by the company that does the dashboards for prodrive... perhaps it\'s more about the skill of the person holding the gun...

well a bit of a change, after a long time of it sat it my room i did not like the final look of the flocking (even though i done a good job :P) i forgot to get picks of it finished but i ended up re-trimming the dash in black suede and instead of having gauges every where i bought a shift counter with 3 built in gauges that work very well! anyways picks of the dash\'s change:

Not too bad a job dude, though that suede looks like the £5/m stuff off ebay. What glue did you use? You shouldn\'t need to staple so much, I can see issues arising or a long day removing them when re fitting some panels to sit flush.
Try getting some Alcantara or Macro-Fibre if you ever feel like a change.
Also, use a surgical scalpal to trim the material.
Title: flocking hard
Post by: ENVYD on April 14, 2008, 12:13:28 PM
i got the suede from a company around here and it was £22/m, the staple\'s are just to keep it in place for when the glue set\'s, not to sure what the glue is as i got it from the same place i bought the suede and they said it will do for what i need it for! and its covered in dust and powder off the white flocking that’s why it looks a bit **** in the pick\'s

Chris
yeah it was a water seal, plates are fine and the final price is £3500 but i am getting a few extra things done to it as well!

i didn’t just use glue encase i pulled it off when i was pulling it tight to get out the slack marks if you get what i mean, like i said i am not sure what the glue is they give me but they said it would work just rather be safe than sorry and keep pulling it off i also though that with it not being fixed in a rigid position and flexing when i move it the glue may split or crack and start coming off

Was waterseals here too matey.  I decided just to leave it at a standard re-build tho.  With the new clutch, MOT, a few small MOT repairs, new centre plate and a few other bits mine came in around £3300.  Drives great now (as far as i can tell at this early stage!) and the lads were canny :)

Will be popping to see the lads at XO on Saturday meself.  Gunther is hopefully going to give my bro a price to install his Jackson Racing Superchrger in his MX5 :)

1000 miles, could do that in 2 days! Take a leisurely drive up north and visit the sites of Scotland, treat the missues. She\'ll be well impressed, also as it\'s on a run in she\'ll not even be able to complain about you flooring it to often (like mine does!)

Sounds like a good price, thinking of getting it ported or going single if i do need a rebuild (maybe both but don\'t tell the wife)

Supercharged MX-5 sounds like fun. Not as fast as a rex tho.

25 mpg???? Thats propper granny shifting that like! 20mpg would be more realistic, especially as you\'ve had a street port done, even then that a pretty generous figure TBH. That\'s the prob with a rebuild, it takes all your cash and doesn\'t allow much left over for running the car.
That car looks amazing mind, love the heater controls in the centre arm rest. Great idea that like

The good thing with re-build miles is you wont be boosting and you will probably be doing mainly motorway miles (I know I am!).

I filled mine up with £76 when I left North Wales.  Only used the top 1/3 of the tank when I got home to Northumberland.  Fuel gauge is probably graded tho and the rest will probs dissapear soon!

You only need to find 600 miles as 200 will be done taking car home and 200 more taking it down for final mapping :)

they said they can drop the car off but i said i wanted to drive it back for the run in mile\'s well it will probs still end un within £200 of the good old v-power to run in :( i will defo be doing the miles on the motorway not door to door

How far away are Lindop like? Also was thinking, does the car need to be moving to do the run-in? If not whats to stop you leaving the car running on idle and topping it up with fuel every once in a while? Unless the engine needs a load applying to it I suppose. Just a thought

when running a piston engine in they need different load levels building up the revs/throttle position with the miles clocked up and i would of said that it will probably be the same or there abouts.

so when are you getting the car back then?? are you going to fit the dash in when you get it back or will you not have enough time with you driving it :D

looks very good btw

I\'ve read the same regarding rotaries, ie. don\'t coast at a steady 60mph to clock the miles, drive at different loads (off boost) through the allowed rev range. Best check with the engine builder to see what he recommends

its has a little and i mean little amount of stretch! all i done was put staples in to hold it while i pulled it tight over the dash i just ran my hand over where there was air pockets and folds to push them to the closest edge then pin it in place again its my first time as well so i don’t no 100% what i am doing but its worked!

Failing that did i see someone mention leather spray? How good are these textured sprays?

Real Alcantara has a lot of stretch IMO if you bought the trimming grade, if not you can peel off the extra backing to give more stretch. Using a heat gun helps, also doing it with 2 people is a whole lot easier!

I don\'t think I\'ll be removing the extra backing, It\'s not exactly the thickest piece of material I\'ve seen... Think I\'ll juts get a friend to help me, and just smooth it out with my hands to get tha airbubbles out..

What sort of glue are you using? I\'ve got some contact glue that has to be applied to bothe materials first and then lay it on, and I\'ve got some spray on glue for all material and fabrics that i\'m planning on using, and just spray the dash and then apply the fabric and smooth it out.

If you could go a bit more into detail on how you appied it, I\'d appreciate it.

Ohh, and with the heating gun, do you mean heating the fabric to make it tighter or more flexible?
Title: flocking hard
Post by: S3TH on April 25, 2008, 06:49:35 PM
Heat gun to make it more flexible.
It\'s the done thing to take the extra backing off when trimming panels. You keep it on if you\'re retrimming seats etc. Also the backing is more textured & the glue, once applied will have high & low points but whatever floats your boat.

You can\'t use any old glue & definitely not spray adhesive from Wickes etc.
Get in touch Audioscape (http://www.audioscape.co.uk/) & tell them Seth sent you, James will know what you need, in particular A29 which is highly resistent to temprature change. Once it sticks, it\'s not coming off! So be very precise...

With the centre pod, have you considered cutting the dash and inserting it from below? You won\'t have that step around the base then, just the nice angled sides coming up, giving it a less "stuck on" feel. I could draw a diagram to explain it better but hopefully you know what I mean...

That is of course if you\'ve not already finalised the design! :Giggle

Ahh sorry, this is the trouble being a newbie, you don\'t have a handle properly where people are upto with their cars. Didn\'t know if you were still trying out ideas.

Retrim looks to be going well though, remember retrimming my old motor, got to loving the smell of Evo-Stik after that...
