Title: coilvers
Post by: lee mills on February 03, 2008, 06:05:37 PM
A question for you more technical guys. I am looking for a set of coilovers but i would like to try and keep it as close as possible to the stockk setup for the road (as i find this extremely comfortable) but also be able to set it harder for days out on track. so the question is what would be the best set up
Thanks
Lee

ime just about to get some d2 coilovers as u can specify which spring rate you want..alot of coilovers are quite harsh as they are intended for track work

It\'s all about the damping and the quality of the damping circuit, rather than the spring rate. If you are on a budget then KYB\'s and springs would be my suggestion - if you can afford more (like, double) then i\'d start by looking at Tein (I was very impressed by mine) and Apex\'i. Then, if you can afford more, the likes of Bilstein and Ohlins are very, very good. But you will pay for it!

You\'d be astonished at the difference to be had in ride quality between two sets with identical spring rates, but different internals.

Driftworks have a kit in development (due out roughly March) The people who have them on their \'S\' Body Nissans seem very pleased with how comfortable they are for normal road use and their ability on track.

I had 8/6 Daiyama Coilovers with electronic damping adjustment on my 200SX. I thought they might be too hard but with the damping set to it\'s highest setting (least damped) it was really easy, it didn\'t bang and crash over bumps but kept the car nice and planted on the bends.

You could also look for 6/4 coilovers some manufacturers do them and they are apparently very pliant. If I were to replace the cheap coilovers I have on my FD I would definitely go for electronic damping adjustment and an 8/6 spring rate but then the FD isn\'t a daily driver for me.

Hi Lee,

If you really want a compliant suspension kit you need look no further than the superbly made Tein Flex kit as my personal belief from fitting and selling many Flex kits is this kit makes an FD ride better than new/standard suspension with an amazing capabilaty for absorbing the potholes and bumps we have on our nasty U/K roads,

Many people never quite appreciate that the springs really only hold the car up and its the quality of the shock absorbers that make the real difference and also keep the tyres planted on the road,

If you do a search and put in flex you should find posts to back this up,

But a couple that spring to mind are from two members who have owned their cars for many years and know intimately what their cars are capable of , one posted that he firmly believed that his new Flex kit had saved his life due to the increased capabilities of his new suspension when he got himself into trouble,

The second is a Track day aholic who was staggered to find that through the chicane at Snetterton using the same tyres he now had fuel surge due to being able to go through the chicane so much faster than previously,

Not cheap cheap but then you get what you pay for, but don\'t forget that as a full club member you are entitled to your 5% discount if ordered via the on-line shop.

Whilst not as good as the Tein Flex kit the Superstreet kit offers a good cost effective coilover kit that has 16 adjustable damping settings,

At  Â£555 plus vat the kit is also around your budget figure,

Hi Rip,

As the Flex kit is a superior product to the Super Street they are priced unfortunately priced accordingly at £920 plus vat.

I must say though that the this new Flex kit that superseded the old Flex kit a year ago is also a really nice looking piece of kit and it almost seems a waste to bolt it onto a motorcar so it can get dirty:D .

Hi Lee, yes the Flex is a full bolt on strut with uppermounts,

We have fitted enough of these kits to supply not only a set of fitting instructions but also base settings for the driver to work from,

Here is a link to these instructions,

As a result of a mail from an MRC member overnight about an e-bay thread selling the S/S kit we have spoken to  Tein and we are going to discount the S/S without top mounts for MRC down to a special delivered price including Vat of £560

We also had a question about spring rates for the S/S kit, these are 448lbs front and 392lbs rear,

If you would like to buy follow this link S/S and make it clear that you came from MRC and we will discount the kit accordingly.
http://www.mazdarotaryparts.com/bfd-s002-tein-super-street-damper-kits-with-or-without-upper-mountsb-809-p.asp

As we are discounting the S/S we will also discount the Mono Flex kit by £60 from the delivered price for MRC
