Title: How many on here have ACTUALLY had failures attributed to Walbros?
Post by: SiH on February 03, 2008, 09:37:53 AM
I\'m investigating uprating the fuel system at the mo.
In my 200sx background, Walbro\'s are pretty much sworn by - cheap, effective, and very reliable.

On here, no-one seems to be fond of them, as the grapevine seems to hate them!
However, I have only found one instance on here of a failure that is attributed to one, and no more. Who else had had an issue with them? There seems to be a lot of people that have heard of issues, but very few that have actually experienced them themselves - i\'m just trying to evaluate the validity of fitting one, compared to a bosch for 3 times the price, which i can find just as many reports of failures with.
RX7club seem to swear by them.

I\'ve found a thread the same as this from about 2 years ago with not much conclusive evidence, i\'m just trying to find out for definite :)
cheers :)
Si

I have just removed one from a customer car that was making a terrible racket.
It was quiet at first start up then got noisy every time from around 5 miles into the journey.
The effect on the engine was that the fuel pressure was dropping off in a major way.
It has been replaced with a Bosch 044 and is now fine.

the supra boys also swear by them.  I think the main problem is that a lot of people have a mental block on anything that isnt called HKS , Greddy or Blitz etc etc.   I have had great results using parts without having to resort to removing my organs to pay for them.

The funny thing is that the Walbro is quite a bit smaller than a stock fuel pump in an RX7.
I have run a stock FD RX7 fuel pump on a Full bridgeport 13b ,99 spec twins at 1.4 bar boost and 1680cc secondary injectors and found that it has been able to keep up with fuel demand.I know that size is not everything, but the Walbro really is quite small.

Pip fitted a walbro on mine lasted 42 miles & died in the middle lane of the
M62,cold,wet getting dark on a sunday had to be towed back to wgt.Fortunately wife was with me in my other car so drove back home - new one fitted picked up following week been fine since.Obviously walbro hadnt done quality control or i wouldnt have had a faulty pump.

I know that on the SXOC the Walbro just started to get a bad rep (few years ago now) and then it was discovered that the guys getting failures were running the tank to empty and that was putting undue strain on the pumps. They were advised to fill up before the light came on and there were no more reports of problems. I had a Walbro in my 200SX for 20,000 miles ish with no probs then again not an RX-7.

See, that\'s my concern as well.

Grant - I recall that, and i was wondering if it was down to the shape of the tank on an FD that there were problems with pickup?

Carl - I take your point, but they are also a heck of a lot smaller than the stock pump on a 200sx (Obviously, different car = different requirements) but they can flow enough for at least twice as much power as standard, I\'m just trying to decide before investing. They are very noisy though! but I had one for 25k miles and it behaved perfectly.

I\'m wondering if the issues people had are, as suggested, down to quality control.
I\'m off to ask similar questions on other forums! :D

Hallo,
I have used walbros on 480+ps RX7\'s, and some 300+ps 200sx. Be careful that you get the high pressure version, not the low pressure one. I have also seen that the rail pressure drops a little above 15psi turbo pressure. Static line pressure set at 42psi, not higher.
