Title: First FD Experience
Post by: T11MNM on February 03, 2008, 12:09:13 AM
I went out to take a look at some FD\'s at some west yorkshire importers this afternoon, i really wasn\'t hoping for much and wasn\'t disappointed. The idea of today was to go have a look at some rougher examples as a way of comparison to what my budget will stretch too.

Today was the first day i had spent any time looking over an FD of any shape or form, they are excellent looking cars in the flesh aren\'t they, way ahead of their time.

I\'m about 6\' 2 or 3 and errm it\'s a bit of a squeeze, in order for me to get my leg underneath the steering wheel of the two i saw today i had to depress the clutch, hopefully a flat bottomed steering wheel and some slight modifications to the runners will help solve this problem *crosses fingers*.

I had a short drive of one of the cars i saw today, it had synchro problems i think as trying to find a gear when coming down the box was impossible, i had to heel/toe to get it into gear, there was also a very weird vibration above 60 kph. Both of my legs were pressed hard against the steering wheel which made any sense of handling go away, I\'m sure there was more room in an MX5 i drove, perhaps it was down to the size of the steering wheel?

Now i know what a bad one feels like i hope any further cars i go and look at with a view to buy will be a whole lot better.

One thing i noticed was that either car i looked at seem to maintain much oil pressure at idle, is this normal? The car i test drove cut out as i rolled to a stop at some traffic lights and then became quite difficult to start, is this a sign of tip failure?

Being difficult to start could be anything...although it is almost guaranteed to be expensive. Not something you want after you have just bought a new car.

I had to have the engine rebuilt 1 month after buying mine! £10,000 in the first 2 months of ownership is a bitch. I was better spending £10,000 on an absolutely mint FD.

Walk away sunshine. If I knew what I knew now about FD\'s (which still isn\'t very much) I wouldn\'t have got my car, I would have waited until the one I wanted came up on the forum.

Maybe i didn\'t make it clear, i have no intention of buying any of the cars today, i was just curious as to what the bad ones were really like.

My intentions are to spend a good deal more money on a car that has had history of rebuild and plenty of other history.

The search button is your friend :Giggle

There is a mod you can do to seat runners that give you more push back on the seat for the taller guys !

Would have thought that was completly shagged ! Out of interest what where they asking for it ?

The stock oil prssure gauge is naff anyway !

Could be something as simple as new oil in the gearbox to fix the dropdown in gear. Could be a shagged clutch or master/slave cylinder.

How can they ask for almost 8k ??? Beggers belief, no wonder prices are falling when people ask silly money for stuff thats knackered tarring others with the same brush.

My friend and I where both shocked at what was on offer really not just the RX7\'s but other imports.

I couldn\'t believe how much stock one place had, they had some really nice "looking" cars, but with the history they have, etc i\'d never buy anything from them. Some cars looked really really ropey.

The vacuum hoses on the RX7 i could get into (they had another and the door handle wouldn\'t open the drivers door.) were all very brittle, god only knows what they would have been like around the turbos.

They even had a Noble, Ferrari 360 and Porsche GT2 the guy obviously has a lot of money to spend on stock, why not improve the cars you are importing rather than ripping people off. The salesman/boy i dealt with couldn\'t close a door let alone a sale of a car i\'m sure of that.

My first thoughts as well mate :rollin :rollin

T11....have a look in the for sale section here, pick a few to go and view and make a day of it buddy.
The good ones are out there, and tend to be enthusiast owned, so you know its gonna be looked after!

I didn\'t want to name names, lol..

I also don\'t want to waste my time traveling around the country just to look at cars, i am trying to get myself in a position where i am financially safe both for the purchase and running costs of the car. (I managed to run up a substantial credit card bill on holiday in the states). I\'ve now cleared that mess so within the next few weeks i will be in a strong position to start looking at cars with a view to buy.

What i don\'t want to be doing is buying a car that cripples me financially as although cars are quite a big part of my life, they aren\'t very important in the eyes of my girlfriend so i need to make sure i can take her on holiday, etc a couple times a year as well.

Thanks for your input so far :)

If you\'re passing by london you can give my FD a go to get an idea.

It has flat rail recaros in the front and it will give you the proper impression how an FD should be. Minus the body work though, the car needs to go to a body shop :P but you\'ll definatly be able to see how an FD should be (performance + handling wise) ;)

I\'m not selling mine yet though :P

i wouldn\'t expect to drive it, a look around and a passenger ride would suffice..

Ideally i would of liked to have been making tracks back up north wednesday afternoon. Is tomorrow evening out of the question?

all i can say is it has a veilside bodykit on which is not very desireable.
car will need respraying to return it to standard spec so have allowed for this in the price and is going to an enthusiast where it will be looked after not stuffed into a wall lol.
yes he is getting a bargain but saves me hassle of tyrekickers/joyriders lol

Shocking really that they expect that amount of money for a car that sounds obviously shagged...

Unfortunately I wouldn\'t look at these cars and try to budget...you have to spend the money when you need to spend the money and try not to cut any corners as in the long run...well it\'s pretty obvious.

Like it\'s been said, if you can afford it go for a single turbo (the safest bet being an enthusiast owned car)...not for the bonus power figs you get but for the reliability and absence of the RATS NEST :2Confused....

Not trying to sell my car here, I just adore RX-7\'s and passing on the advice I got when I bought mine which I can see has saved me in the long run :wave
