Title: MOT Big time failure - Save mee :(
Post by: Joeh on February 02, 2008, 04:38:43 PM
Ok everyone, I managed to fail my MOT on emissions and it wasn\'t small...

My Hydrocarbons were well above 4000ppm.

So I went back and got them to do the emissions again while I played with the IGN ADV on my PFC. Managed to get everything in the requirement (CO2, CO, O2, Lamda etc), except for Hydrocarbons, got about 2000ppm.

Can anyone tell me how the hell I\'m suppost to get 1200ppm without turning my engine off? :P

Car has full decat, including no precat. APEXi PFC. Large street port...

Any help please?

Thanks
Joeh

Apperantly HC is a must :(

I made the 3.5 co. Originally I had got 7.95co, however, after fiddling around with the PFC a little, I managed to obtain 2.03 solidly :).

Only problem is the damn HC\'s! I can get it to drop around 2k, but I have no idea what to do about it, its driving me crazy :(

Anyway, I\'d be interested to sort HC out because thats extra unburned fuel, which means it costs me monies!!

FYI

Pre july 31st 1995 car not on database (include all imports) emmision test is just basic non-cat test 3.5% co2 and just checked 1200ppm.

Thanks Timmy, yeah same like I was saying, managed to clear the 3.5 but couldn\'t clear the 1200ppm HC.

Any help?

have you a cat on it ?  the cat lowers the HC, reconnect the airpump if its unplugged or make sure air pump is working !! or if you do have a cat then it might be goosed.
But pretty sure before a 94/95 it does not need to pass a cat test if its an import..

Are you just letting the engine tick over. Sometimes giving it more rpm without being heavy footed will reduce the figure but don\'t go mad with any changed figures in the pfc.

Plus people have talked about adding methanol to the fuel to get the fugures lower. Do a search because it is recent.

Another one is to leave the settings as they are rev the engine hard and then get them to take the reading when you take your foot off the throttle.

Not an easy thing to pass. We even had fun on the 1st gen with LPG ! This had no emissions stuff on at all !

Biggest question in my mind is how much of the reading is the oil being burnt in the system through the OMP ?

Thanks everyone for your suggestions, I\'ve tried the reving thing it didn\'t work either, I\'ve tried searching the forum for "hydrocarbon" and such linked, but I was only able to find 3 topics of which have no relevance to MOT :(

If my car is extremly high in hydrocarbons, could this mean the car needs remapping because its extremly rich, or can I do something temporary to solve the problem?

Thanks :D

The air pump has been removed and there are no cats on the car, I only have a high flow cat which I could fit, or a backbox but they are both too high flow to do anything :(

Thanks for the suggestion though :)
