Title: Now an FC RX-7 owner... (with pics)
Post by: posam on January 30, 2008, 06:37:21 PM
I\'m probably going to be lurking a lot and posting daft questions sometime soon.. so I guess I\'d better say hello and introduce myself...

I bought my first rx-7 on Sunday... it\'s an 88 n/a in a few shades of red.. done about 58k miles... and seems to be good mechanically everywhere.. a few silly niggles.. have to have a quick look at the heater.. as the blower works.. but no hot air.. and I had a look at the sunroof earlier today.. think I need to get some grease on it.. as once I managed to get it popped into the up position it seemed to wind back and forward ok..

Anyhow.. I think it\'s almost completely standard.. except for a brand new exhaust system.. so I shall be looking for various bits over the next few months.. wheels are definately gonna need to be changed at some point...

So anyway.. here\'s a few pics from Monday evening...

Hello and welcome to MRC

We don\'t see many of these models that are anywhere near as good as yours these days,

I had one of these some 12 years ago and it rekindled my interest in Mazdarotarys which ultimatly led to the formation of the club you have just found.

As I said there\'s a few niggly bits.. the front wing is a slightly different shade of red than the rest of the car.. obviously been replaced at some point.. and there is a small dent in the rear arch and some scratches.. but for a 20 year old car.. I\'m very pleased indeed...

lights are shockingly dim though... I thought I\'d be clever and get the superbrilliance bulbs from halfords.. only to unscrew all the units this morning and pull out exactly the same bulbs already fitted.... I\'ve not been out with the new bulbs but not holding out much hope for a significant improvement :P

ah well..

everything else feels awesome... though I have gone from driving a mini clubman (of \'71 vintage) and a fiat strada with the awesome 1.5 litre boring single cam engine producing probably less than the 85bhp it originally was supposed to come with... :P

so the speed and acceleration are ever so slightly scary... although the handling is as good as the mini\'s any day.. feel much more connected with the road...

I can see it emptying my wallet on the fuel side though.. must remember to reset the mile counter when I refill next so I can work out just how little mpg it\'s giving me....

All in all.. I love it.. and so does the wife.. which is a very good thing.. as it means there\'s a much greater chance of me being allowed to spend money on it prettyfying... :D

Yeah it does look like a clean example. like you say its a 20 year old car so some things are gonna be playing up. it means you get to know the car inside and out though. One question though. Whats this bit hanging next to the exhaust?
Title: Now an FC RX-7 owner... (with pics)
Post by: posam on January 30, 2008, 07:49:54 PM
errr.. as far as I know it\'s part of the original emissions thing.. supposedly connected up to an air pump or something.. I took it to my friendly local retro orientated mechanic.. and he seemed to think removing it.. and the thing it\'s attached to should free up a few ponies.. and remove a fair bit of weight.. was gonna be one of the questions I was gonna ask though.... :D
Title: Now an FC RX-7 owner... (with pics)
Post by: posam on January 30, 2008, 07:49:56 PM
so.. yeah.. is that right.. anyone else know why my car has three exhausts... seems a bit excessive :D  (ok yeah I double posted and decided to edit to hide the fact..)

It just looks low to the ground thats why I asked (I\'d be worried about catching it on something). I thought i\'d seen them before on other Egi\'s but wasn\'t sure. i don\'t think that its wrong place or anything though.

its for the emissions system - not sure if its a simple case of just removing it though ?

That\'s part of the split air system from the thermal reaction system of the exhaust.  If you have a standard exhaust then its an integral part, so leave it be! :)

Nice looking example you have got there :yes

Welcome to MRC :wave

also does it havnt different wheels on the front to the back?

the back ones look polished, could be my imagination though

errrrr.. I shall have to look see when I get home.. I have a feeling three have been shined.. and one is a bit dull.. but I can\'t honestly say whether or not that is the case without actually looking at them..

I was trying to work out what offset wheel I\'d need whilst browsing the net last night..

I reckon if I were to get a set of 17 x 7\'s I\'d need about a 25 offset to make sure it had the same clearance internally.. no idea whether I\'d need to make any arch modifications though.. can get the overall rolling radius less than 0.5% different using 215/40 tyres.. I\'m just gonna have to get down there with a tape measure I think and do some measuring :D

Just stick some TII or Cabriolet wheels on there if you fancy a change :yes

The early cars had matt finish wheels and the later revision(89~) had shiny ones :)  (I may have that the wrong way around)
I suspect its been kerbed at some point and had a 2nd hand wheel fitted :yes

I keep looking at rays engineering wheels and getting very bad thoughts though.... unfortunately I think my wallet may have something to say in the matter.. :D

Anyway.. I guess wheels will have to wait till I\'ve sorted out the rough bits of bodywork.. have a local painter who\'s apparently quite reasonable.. so will have to take it down and see if he can give me a price..

Looks good and nice to see what looks like a pretty nice clean original EGI.   I have a blue 1988 EGI, but with a few more miles on the clock..92k.  Hopefully I can help/advise on a few things:
- dim headlights...they were never fantastic on these cars..on the basis you have the superbright bulbs then it may be the reflectors that have had it, or they are out of alignment.  I ended up replacing both headlight units last year as the reflectors on the originals had got so bad I really could not drive safely when it was dark!
- nice to see the original extra "exhaust"...as Brett said if its the standard exhaust system then my advice would be to keep it.
- the original wheels should be polished alloys front and rear.  Sounds like you plan to replace them, but if you are keeping them, then you may be able to restore them to their original state.
- fuel economy...not good for your carbon footprint I\'m afraid.  Expect at best 27-28 mpg on a good run, and significantly less around town.
Enjoy the car, and look after it...there are not many around...and most importantly they are fun!
Ken

hmm.. exhaust has been replaced from downpipe all the way back.. including cat removal.. but I guess the people that did it just looked at it and thought.. huh.. better leave it in...

Will have it up on the ramps sometime soon and have a proper look...

Update on the bulbs.. I think they have made an improvement.. and I think the main problem now is actually alignment.. as now I can actually see the light that\'s being produced, I\'ve found I was lighting up the top half of trees and road signs really very well indeed.. but couldn\'t see the curb at all..

will have to take the shrouds off and have a twiddle with the screw tomorrow evening.. well as long as the predicted snow doesn\'t cause my enthusiasm to die a dramatic death...

I also think removing the remains of the continental beam reflectors have helped brighten things up a bit.. they were a dirty grey in colour where the sticky stuff had been left behind and right in front of the main part of the lens...

ah well.. we shall see.

Is it possible to get a boot cover thingamy from anywhere... ?? Would the car have come with one as standard.. and it\'s just got lost.. or did they just not bother..

Oooh... like the one on this turbo.. (http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u227/andykxkid/IMG_0380.jpg)

Glad you\'ve identified the problem on the lights...
They did come with the boot cover, although I purchased mine in 94 and it was broken then, and has deteriorated ever since...finally got rid of it 5 years ago.  I haven\'t looked for a replacement myself, so whether they are available I don\'t know.
By the way, is it an original engine or rebuild..?  Hows the oil consumption and pressure?
Ken
Title: Now an FC RX-7 owner... (with pics)
Post by: grinder on February 01, 2008, 09:55:44 AM
you get get the boot cover from any TII - but you will need the rear speak covers as these have the mounting brackets on them
Title: Now an FC RX-7 owner... (with pics)
Post by: posam on February 01, 2008, 10:16:34 AM
seems to be original & un-rebuilt.. oil pressure is steady in the middle of the guage... and oil consumption seems ok so far.. I\'m not sure how much oil it\'s expected to burn but checked it the other day after filling up and it was still between the lines..

Any particular recommendations for oil/ any brands better than others for the rotary ?? I guess looking at the manual I should be using 10w/30...

fuel consumption at the moment I\'m still not sure if it\'s quite right... I\'ve done about 80 ish miles to half a tank.. does that sound about what you\'d expect ?? It pops a hell of a lot when you come off the throttle.. would that indicate that it\'s running too rich.. and if so is it easy enough to lean it out.. or is that just a bad move which will cause the magic revolving thing to destroy itself ??

your probably going to get alot of mixed opinions for the oil

but i hear castrol gtx is good

Thats definately not right, If I\'m good ;) I can do a 60 mile trip from Bristol to South wales on 1/4 of a tank and thats in the Turbo II.

Agreed but it does depend on what sort of driving your doing. Motorway/duel carrigeway I agree but round town its considerably less. Plus when you first get a new car espically something like an RX you always step on the loud pedal alot at first!

When I took my TII back home from London (London -> Holyhead) I was super careful with the loud pedal, even downshifting to fourth for slight gradients on the M\'way, and always keeping the boost gauge in the negative.

I was chuffed to return about 38/39 mpg for the trip.  Not getting anywhere near that now though and a 200 mile trip at a constant 50 is your theoretical maximum mpg anyway.

What really annoyed me was when I did the same sort of trip in my 135bhp 2.0i Accord Coupé: it also returned 38mpg :Hammer

I was doing about 50 - 55 mph back from santa pod (120 miles), most the way, and used just over 1/4 tank.

I read somewhere that 56mph is the optimum speed for mininmal fuel consumption.

I had my Egi for just over a year and its a complex relationship, sometimes we disagree and she breaks, sometimes we drift around roundabouts and understand each other, but im glad it was the first jap / rear wheel drive car ive owned.

mine is less than 20 (TII) but i blame the knights beat ECU as that overfuels, lights up the sky after the odd boot and then de accel.
You say its been de-catted so I dont think you need that 3rd exhaust.  this was the same on my old Mk1, This can be be got rid off way back to the engine if not blocked off at the engine.  I just brought a block off kit for that reason.
if the hot air is not getting through check the two hoses at the rear of the upper manifold, they go into the bulkhead, if they are hot then its a fault with the matrix or logicon unit.  I have both if you require them.  Its all electrically actuated so it could be the actuator bit as well, let me know if its that and i will send you one. (fits to the side of the heater matrix)

hmm.. ok I may have been a bit unfair on the poor thing.. it\'s still indicating half a tank and I\'m up to about 110 miles now... must just be me getting used to the guage.. will stick it out and do a full tank and work it out when I\'m down to the empty mark.... :D

It\'s worth pointing out that the non-turbo is much worse on fuel than the turbo, on a TII you can see over 25mpg at motorway speeds (cruise control on) an egi will see maybe 20-21mpg.  This has a lot to do with the differing setup of thier emission control systems IMO. :wave

Hi, sorry been away so just catching up on this thread.
Fuel guage...for mine, 1st half of the tank = 90 miles, 2nd half = 150-160 miles!  As someone said they are not linear guages.
Oil..I use Castrol GTX mineral.  Always carry some spare in the car just in case.
Oil consumption...remember that the engine is supposed to consume oil...I guess I go through about 2 pints every 1,000 miles.  Oil change every 4,000 (well thats what I do anyway!).  If the oil hasn\'t been changed recently, or you dont know when it was changed, then I would change it now.
Oil Pressure...should be reading 60-70 (so 2/3-3/4) on the standard Mazda guage at normal cruise speed.  Half way is too low.  Probably a faulty guage but worth getting it checked.  Assuming it is the guage you could fit a decent replacement (details on the technical forum I believe).
Headlights...no, got mine off e-bay.  They were units from a 89 Turbo at cost me £20 or thereabouts (just emailed seller to make sure the reflectors were in good condition before buying).
Hope this helps
Cheers for now
Ken

Hi Ken.. thanks for the info.. I checked the oil pressure again yesterday.. and you\'re right..  it\'s sitting at bang on 60, that\'s me misreading the instruments again...

Also an update on fuel consumption..from the £50 I put in.. I got a total of 222.22 miles before the orange light was at constant illumination and I decided I didn\'t want to run out of petrol on the motorway.. I reckon with current prices £50 got me about 48 litres.. which is err.. 10.5 gallons.. which gives me an average of about 21 miles to the gallon... if my calculations are right..

so not as bad as I thought.. and certainly liveable.. if I can stop pressing the loud pedal so much anyway.. :burnout
Title: Now an FC RX-7 owner... (with pics)
Post by: grinder on February 06, 2008, 04:30:30 PM
£50 @ £1.009 = 49.55 litres

49.55 litres / 4.545 = 10.9 gallons

222.22 / 10.9 = 20.38 MPG

Hi...that sort of fuel consumption doesn\'t sound too bad assuming its a mix of town and country.
Mean\'t to say...the popping on decelaration is normal...mines done it for years.  Doesn\'t seem to do any harm...it just encourages you not to slow down too much!  I believe there is an adjustment that can be done to stop it...I know RX motors did something to mine which did stop it..but it came back after a month or so.  I\'m sure there stuff about it on one of the technical sections.
Cheers

isnt the popping because ur running rich? tho it may use more fuel, it keeps the engine in better shape, rotaries are designed to run rich anyhu

yeah that was a mix of town and motorway.. using it as my daily.. so short journies during the week.. and then longer ones of a weekend... Although grinder... I wanna know where you\'re getting petrol for less than £1.01/litre.. I\'m spending between £1.03 and £1.06/litre around here... and not for fancy high octane stuff either.. just the normal tesco/esso unleaded!!

Overall I\'m very pleased though.. I seem to be working every Saturday this month.. which will pay for the petrol..:D but means I \'m probably not going to get a chance to get quotes for the little bodywork bits.. I\'ll see what it looks like after a good colour based polish anyhoo.. which hopefully I\'ll get done on Sunday.... and I have to get my bum into gear and check out the heating.. not had ice yet.. but it feels like it\'s going to happen soon...

Greetings from the sunny south coast!
Sounds like your fuel consumption is about right...would be interested to see how it stacks up on a long motorway run.
I was thinking about the exhaust popping...I actually think this is related to the air pump and not specifically the mixture.  I\'ll have a look on the forum as I\'m sure I\'ve seen specifics on it.  Ken

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Some pikey toe rags have stabbed my front tyre and ripped the two rear number plate light covers off while the car\'s been parked at the station...

Sooo.. on top of having to pay for the tax next month.. I\'ve just had to shell out for a new tyre too.. as they\'d stabbed into the sidewall area.

Anyone got a spare couple of the bumper mounted light covers.. it looks like the lights themselves are still there.. but obviously the bulbs are now exposed to the elements...

I wish it was legal to have a South African style alarm/car jacking deterent system installed.. rather than just the clifford one that\'s on there now... I quite like the idea of giving the ******* a massive jolt of electric when playing with my car. :(

Hows the car been running?
Mean\'t to say, I did a roundtrip Hampshire to Wales last week (first long run for some time)...480 miles roundtrip, 90% motorway.  At a steady 75-80 on the motoryway I got 26 mpg.

Starting to think about more cosmetic things again.. god I\'m a tart. Gonna try a trick I found on the web for getting rid of dents.. and see if I can get the big one above the rear arch out... then I may just see what I can do about the mismatched colour on some of the panels...

That\'s a very common failure :yes  Recommend you revert to using the hook type fittings :D (Look at the end of the arm and you will see what I mean :Thumbsup!

Lol bosch wiper blade purchased with said hook type... I had my hand out of the window with the rubber part of my ice scraper on the way to the station this morning... my old wiper was trashed.. it obviously fell out of the bush during the day and got run over by a tractor... lol.. I stopped and picked it up for posterity anyway on the way home last night.. :D

Right...

The car takes a while to warm up.. basically until it\'s warm it has a habit of cutting out if you take your foot off the throttle... I\'ve found that leaving it in the car park to warm up doesn\'t work quite as well as actually driving it.. I only do a short journey home mostly quiet country roads.. and can normally keep it ticking over even when stopped... (my heel toe\'ing is getting quite good now.. and that\'s with big clumpy boots on)

Anyway.. last night left station as usual.. had a nice clear road for about half a mile.. then it kind of goes up hill.. it\'s narrow.. with passing places.. some bigger than others.

Car in front of me was one of those diddy peugeot things.. there was a car at the passing place at the top of the hill.. a focus or something similar... anyhow.. the diddy car decided it couldn\'t get through the considerably larger than it, passing place.. and decided to stop on the hill. and then reverse back towards me...

stopping I managed fine.. just gave it a bit extra gas to keep the engine ticking over... unfortunately reverse means I need to use the clutch, as well as the brake... and err.. well my feet may be good.. but can\'t really manage three pedals at once.. not with a car coming with me...

therefore off the accelerator the foot comes.. instant engine stopping.. arse.

ah well.. hand brake on restart... errrmmm.. no.

oh balls..

it seems my overpowering urge to stuff my foot down on the accelerator to stop it stalling has flooded the engine..

so roll down the hill to the  big passing place I\'d just gone past and stop there..

dig out the manual, handily left in the glovebox..

To start a flooded engine hold the accelerator pedal down.. and turn the engine over till it catches.. now in retrospect this seems like a bad idea.

It didn\'t help anyway.

I\'ll get my toolkit out i think.. I know I should be able to take the spark plugs out and crank the engine over to get rid of the fuel.. it\'s getting dark.. but enough light..  oh arse.. took the toolkit out the other day.. it\'s in the shed.

so there\'s me.. stuck with front sticking out into a narrow, hilly country road.. can\'t roll it back any further.. as the back wheels gone up a hilly bank..just enough room to get a van through.. so I just sit and wait for mr breakdown service to turn up..

hour and a half later.. and the very helpful, friendly man turns up.. turns out it\'s the same guy that I saw a couple of months ago when my strada developed a leak around the carb, and wouldn\'t run.. so got chatting again.

took the plugs out.. turned the engine over.. my god the amount of fuel in the engine.. the plugs need changing.. but it looks like my car is dumping faaaaar to much petrol in at the moment.. will have to get it rolling road tuned I think.. couldn\'t do anything to get it started.. so a toe home it was... now the next bit didn\'t actually heppen, in case anyone tries to put two and two together.. I categorically deny the fact that the engine of my car somehow miraculously started on the way home.. wouldn\'t want anyone loosing their jobs now would we.. especially not after being so extremely helpful..
Anyway.. engine was now running so I gave a toot and we pulled over.. he told me to rev it a bit.. and I put my foot on the pedal.. which wnet straight to the floor with no apparent effect.. arse.. throttle cable had become detached when he was trying to get it to start earlier.. soo.. warmed the car up using the throttle lever on the throttle body utnil we were fairly certain it would start again.. then turned it off and re-attached the cable.. thankfully started again ok.. all sorted.. home we go.

I get in.. pretty much knackered.. but have to go back out to get some bread and milk and stuff..

Ooh I know.. I\'ll fit the windscreen wiper I bought earlier.. so I can see where I\'m going..

hmm.. how does it go one.. well that bits snapped.. it says it\'s a replacement.. I guess I\'ll just have to unscrew the plasticy bit at the end of the wiper and slot it over the shaft.. I think at this point I knew it wasn\'t going to work.. but wasn\'t really thinking straight.. slides on.. but doesn\'t hold.. (of course there\'s nothing to hold it too the wiper.. so just slides up and down the stalk floppy like.. ) Won\'t sit flush with the window as it\'s not got the swivel bit at the end.. (that\'s where the pin sheared.. not the wiper blade itself.. but the plastic bit on the end of the metal rod..) so try and take it back off.. and the plastic bit on the back of the new blade snapped right off....

Arse.. not my night really

then this morning after clearing the window with my scraper again.. started driving and the water from the bonnet hit the screen.. flicked the wiper to mist without thinking.. screeeech... quick turn it off.. damn.. no that was intermittent.. screeech..

Just hoping I haven\'t actually scratched the windscreen.. didn\'t have time to check it at the station cos the train was pulling in as I was parking... Just not having much luck this week.

Well after having driven it for the last 4 months and enjoyed some good times.. I\'ve decided to sell the rex and get something a little more sedate.... before I lose my license.... I can\'t seem to control my foot to the floor instinct and I keep seeing that needle creep well into the instant ban territory... plus to be frank the mrs is cutting down my fuel allowance....

Have kept it topped up with oil, changed all the spark plugs, bought a rear parcel shelf and replacement rear speakers...
It\'s had 3 brand new tyres and apart from that is pretty much as I bought it...

- 1.3 (well, 2.3 ) litre N/A 13b rotary engine, fuel injected with approx 142BHP, but due to the de-cat exhaust, probably a tad more.
- Original 58k (IIRC) miles
- 5 speed manual gearbox
- 4 good tyres with plenty of tread and a space saver spare
- Power steering
- Cruise control
- Electric mirrors
- Electric windows
- Remote central locking & Clifford alarm (expensive one) with manual
- Wash/wipe on front & rear
- Original Clarion tape player/radio and speakers.
- Approx 2 months MOT left
- Tax till end of August \'08
- Original handbook/manual, etc
- Correct V5c, current MOT and tax disc
- Recent oil & filter change, all fluid levels checked.
- Recently valeted and cleaned
- Two sets of full keys & two alarm fobs.

Previous owner had a full custom de-catted exhaust system build and fitted by a jap expert, the MOT done (only needed a side light and a rear fog light) and new spark plugs.

Only things wrong with the RX7 are:
- Paint. Got a few scratches and dents and there are a few panels a slightly different colour.
- The heater doesn\'t work. Never minded though as it does get a little warm in there anyway.
- Sunroof doesn\'t open. Trys to move, but only moves about 1/8".- I have played with this... the runner needs greasing.. if you give it a little push from inside while pressing the button it opens fine.. and no problems closing at all.
Will get the grease out this week and do it properly.

Looking for offers in the region of £1000

Car is located near Rochester, Kent.

Cheers,
Phil

I\'ll take some daylight pics when I get in this evening...

i saw the car a few months ago...thought i\'d just add thats its in a great condition and probably worth around the asking price.

posam did you manage to fabricate the fitting for the parcel shelf?
