Title: Performance exhaust systems
Post by: VishalStar on January 29, 2008, 10:18:46 AM
Hi everyone, need some advice on exhaust systems for my 94 type r.
Currently running a completely stock engine, but i want to sort out the exhaust for a good balance of noise and performance.
Looking to stick on a HKS downpipe and a suitable catback. WHat would you recommend bearing in mind it is a stock engine?

I am looking for modest power gains 10-15hp (more is always good but i am realistic).

A very important thing is sound. I have heard numerous FDs in different states of tune, with different exhausts. I really dont want that high rasping/farting sound that most jap style exhausts produce on WOT. It just sounds wrong to me.

This is probably wishful thinking but I would love to recreate a sound similar to a lambo or f355 with a tubi exhaust as i love that kinda high yet deep howl. I know a lot of that comes with individual throttle bodies helping produce that racecar roar, but im just looking for an exhaust at this point.

Most of the N1s, super dragger, kakimoto etc dont fit the bill, they are the wrong pitch/tone. I think the closest was the nur spec V but even then it was still different. Also I dont mind the scooby style burble you get at idle with these things but a deep humming/drone noise would be better. However idle noise is not that important.

Sorry for being so detailed and fussy guys, but im sure you all understand the pride and love we have for our cars and i want it to be perfect!

cheers

Hi thanks for the reply. Bit of a newbie question but what does SMB stand for? i have seen that on a lot of threads!

SMB is the make from Oz, the other exhausts that might fit the bill are Racing Beat Exhausts that have a nice burble and a really nice sound at WOT

I had a Racing Beat single-exit on my first Rex, which was also de-catted. Did sound fantastic, but not too loud. Lovely rumble at idle, and really yelped at high revs. BUT like everything else American, they\'re built to a price, so despite being stainless, it rusted through around the canister welds. The lower grades of stainless can, apparently, rust. With that said, the car had been horribly neglected, which may have contributed. The guys at Rotechniks, who supplied it, had not heard of it happening to any other pipes of that make.
Replaced it with an HKS Silent Hi-Power, which was a terrible mistake, cos it was the loudest thing ever, like driving with your head in a cement mixer. Even short journeys I\'d arrive deaf and mad with my head vibrating slightly and acute tinnitus!
With that said, I\'ve currently got a Nur-Spec, which I find a lot more acceptable (though there\'s a cat on this car, which helps), but I\'ve seen plenty of posts from people who say theirs are far too loud, so maybe the HKS has permanently damaged my hearing!
I\'ve also had an unknown make JASMA-compliant mild steel thing which came on the current car, which actually had a really nice sound but also suffered from the dreaded tin worm.
Of them all, the Racing Beat definitely sounded the "nicest" although I realise that\'s a fairly subjective term. Just be aware you may need to stay on top of corrosion issues (I\'ll now get shot down by people saying "I\'ve had an RB for twenty years, he\'s talking rubbish"!)

I had a silent Hi power on my SX, it was a very nice exhaust - subtle on low revs and around town, but with a nice burble, and made a satisfactory noise on boost :wack:
However, i went to view an FD with a Silent hi-Power... bejeesus! It was louder than the Nur Spec i had on my SX at one point!!

We fitted a Dragon midpipe and back box to a stock RX7 last month, was a great sound and very sensible noise wise.
He is back with us soon, you could come listern if you wish when here.

They come with a life time warentee and price is pretty reasonable to.

Just as a slight aside, IME mild steel always produces a much nicer sound, much more resonant, unlike stanless which always rasps.

But then the mild steel will end up more weld than exhaust soon and you\'ll be replacing it in a couple of years with the amount of crap they put on our roads :(

Thanks for all the responses guys, some interesting info especially the point about mild steel having a less rasping sound than stainless. I guess i dont mind the rust issue if i get two years use out of the exhaust as long as it sounds good.

Rotaryart, where are you guys based? I have ordered from you before but forgot where you are. I might come down and hear that rx running.

A lot of people are recommending racing beat, but i have never heard one. Does anyone have a sound clip of a racing beat FD (single or double tip exhaust) at idle and WOT? There must be something on the web.

What about exhausts like Supersprint/Scorpion as i have been through these on my old e36 m3 and they sounded great. Does it work for an FD?

Scorpion no. Super sprint i can\'t comment on.

The JIC Magic exhausts are very under rated and availible in stainless, Ti and stainless and finally full Ti. If you want a more Howly sound the Ti exhuasts tend to give that kind of noise but you pay alot more for them. They retain heat better and they are light weight.

The other option in the Tanabe/Greddy systems they do a few for the FD depending on what you want from the car.

Thanks for all the input, im looking at a blitz nur spec cat back. I know they are very loud but would they be slightly less noisy considering i have no other mods?

Speaking of no other mods, im wondering whether the nur spec cat back would be fine to run without a pfc? would i encounter boost creep? i dont really want to buy a pfc just yet but do want to get rid of my stock mazda exhaust. its too quiet.

As long as you leave the cat in you should be ok, most mods on stock ecu is filters and cat back exhaust any more and you need an ecu

This may help,

If you want something that you can hear, but won\'t annoy the neighbors and flows well, have a look at the Racing Beat Twin tip or Single tip the other one would have been the Tiger cat back but these are out of stock,

You can find more details here if you wish and also the Blitz systems

Hope this helps.
