Title: anyone ever taken there FD/FC to the ring?
Post by: wee_blim on January 21, 2008, 11:27:18 AM
Always wanted to do a day or 2 at Nurenburg, and finally been given a bit of notice by some mates doing a trip there in May. I worked out the costs before when I was in my little 1.6 CRX and the fuel etc would have come to around £500 or so.

Obviously the RX7 would be a hell of alot more, + bringing a few bottles of oil and coolent just incase. Was wondering if anyone had done a trip like this before and could give a rough price of fuel, baring in mind we will be driving the whole way there (except of course for the ferry), doing maybe 5 or 6 laps at the ring and driving back again. Im wondering if the cost of this will outweigh the fun and weather or not it will be worth it, but would seriously love to do a day at the ring in the FD.

Any input welcomed... even if its simply... "its a fu***ng stupid idea" :Laugh

Well, short of going totally mental on the way there and back I think you could get there in a tank of juice, maybe a tank and a half, so that\'s ~£80 each way... Then just round up to £100 each way as you\'ll need to get up to speed on the autobhans ;)

It\'s "only" 400 miles away.

Then add hotel, ferry + juice used there, +beer etc...

Loads of guys have gone from FDUK as well over the last few years so they can tell you how much they shell out each time they go.

Eeeerm....Coming from the southeast, I reckoned it was  a 1000 mile round trip including laps.
That\'s 50 gallons at 20MPG  and at £5 per gallon, thats £250 on fuel .
It aint a cheap trip. but worth doing  for the fantastic experience.
Add Trackday insurance and continental AA cover and costs add up.

I\'m looking at renting a Ringtool and going Ryanair thus year. I\'m reluctant to risk my pride & joy on the Armco.
Beware, the Ring is seriously addictive. Check the real addicts on northloop.co.uk. Registration is free.
Get practicing on GT4 and a wheel before you go. It does help.

I think from my old house it was 400 miles to the \'ring, then obviously 400 back ;)

Add 14 miles per lap and it all adds up. But I did go in a car that used a little less juice last time I went.

Nurenburg is where they signed a treaty!

The Nurburgring...is I believe where you want to go??? ;)

You don\'t need trackday insurance, but you do need to check your own insurance does cover you.  Don\'t do this by ringing up....just look through your policy and check it doesn\'t specifically state the Nurburgring.

If you go via Lille, and through Prum it is as good as 300 miles from Calais.  From Bristol its as good as 1000mile round trip.

Look at spending at least £1000 if you are going there, with Fuel, accommodation, food, lap tickets. Ferries etc.

As for going over for the day, I used to have a guy who would buy a day return ferry ticket from me, ride...(yes ride) out to the Ring, do 20 laps, then ride home.....all in one day....now thats mad!!!

Check out Ben Lovejoys site....there is a webcam of the place, and you can check out the weather.  If its raining don\'t bother going out...you wont enjoy, and you will stack it!

Best thing is rent a BM from Ring Rentals, that way you can at least get home if it all goes wrong.  Don\'t use Avis.....The last bill from them when it went wrong was €4500!!!

Also, apparently a few insurance co\'s have excluded "one way toll roads" in Europe which is only the \'ring (again apparantly) and everything else is covered.

Plus I\'ve never driven it like a track, just as a fast B road so always kept it in the realms of sensible.

Yeah I guess that is another way of stating the Ring.....Ive seen it though where people have said they\'ve rung their insurance companies and basically said, Am I covered to rag my car round one of the most dangerous tracks that mascaraed itself as a public road at times hitting almost 170mph???  And then wonder why they say NO!!!

The best thing would be to come out on the run that is being arranged through here....that way you can come out in cars with people that know the place.

thanks for the info AtomicRex, how much of that £1k do you think will be fuel? we are getting a big package deal with ferry/accomodation etc so Im not gonna include that yet, its weather the fuel costs will be worth it.

Im not just going for 1 day, we are going on the friday, saturday the Ring is only open for an hour due to some racing events happening which should be fun to watch. In the time it is open however I will be passenger riding with my mate whos been to the Ring a few times before. Then sunday I will be having 5 laps or so in my own car aswell as maybe a few in his. :D

We go from Winchester in Hampshire (or thereabouts) to the chunnel, then to the ring and back. Round trip is 1000-1300 miles, depending where you stay and how many laps you do, fuel thus roughly £300-400 (and not getting cheaper :-/)...

Something I find hard to believe here is I get around 120 miles to about £60 of vpower.  To be fair this is country lane driving and a little about town with a bit of A road mixed in, but surely can pure motorway driving be that much better in terms of mpg?

Jeez!

I\'ll see about 400km on a tank, so around 250 - 260 miles per tank and can do a bit more on a m\'way hike, and I have done probably around 30mpg stuck on the M1 doing 50 mph for the whole length of it, so it all depends on how you drive I guess.

im looking at going to the ring\' in april, mine does about 200 miles to a full tank, probably less now ive got my bigger fueling system and upp\'d the boost lol. I reckon the £300-£400 estimate is going to be pretty damn close mate, because you know you will be giving it a bit of stick on the way there!

We now sell a tank with a 107L capacity!  That will give you a bigger range!

LOL! Just been down the pub so sorry for laughing but it just masks the range problem and doesn\'t really affect the fuel consumption problem ;)

I get a chill whenever I fillup the standard 60L tank so I\'d probably keel over with 107L to put in!!!

Been 3 years running only spent around £500-50 per trip and we stay for 4-5 nights - I run a trip yearly with around 8-10 people average and offer accom+breaky and ferry just over £200 so looking at £300/50 for fuel/food/beer... (get a passenger and split the cost too :D thats what im doing when were off in May...having my birthday on the ring :D)

It\'s 12.9 miles round the track at very low MPG, so only takes a few laps to drink a tank...

(we do drive slow until the Autobahn\'s though... and only around 6-10 laps over the trip)

Tyres are the biggest killer when ya get back IMO

Its 13.5 miles round....and at 4.5mpg it really does hurt your wallet.

Depends on your priorities for going over there...personally Id rather not travel 1000miles return to just do 10 laps.

When I used to take tours over there on the bikes I used to do over 30 laps every day!

Our trip is, granted, is a little more expensive as we tow over there....not the most comfortable car to drive the distance....plus the bonus is we have spares and a workshop to fix problems.

The other thing is that if you crash your car, yes the AA will bring the car home, but they take 2 weeks to get it back....and stuff gets broken, scratched and taken whilst it is moved from shipper to shipper!

Well Ill be quite happy with only 8 laps myself and another 2 or 3 in another car, and if its correct and I only spend that much then it seems worth it, however I get the feeling I will spend alot more than that in fuel, I would guestimate with the average millage I get, that it will be closer to £800 on fuel for the round trip.

If thats the case dont waste money going to the Ring, take your car to some one who can fix it cause bad economy aside - yours isnt running right!

£800 in fuel? Your joking?

I come from north london, junction 21a of the M25.  It takes just over a tank to get there cruising between 80-100 the whole way, and thats taking the shortest, prettiest route (more little country lanes) I average 21mpg in a lightly tuned RX7

So lets say £100 a each way is a good estimate.  I budget £100 each way for fuel every time i go and never spend it all.

Then theres hotel, thats 80 euro a night, so 40 euro each if you have a mate. So lets say 30 quid a night to be on the safe side.

3 nights, accomodation & fuel & ferry = £90+£200+£30 for ferry (if you go dover dunquerque and split you and your mate) that makes in my books it costs £320 for 3 nights there, then its just food and fuel and laps.

Food is about 30 euro a night if you reall splash out, laps are i think 19 euro a lap this year so if you do 2 laps a day and eat thats as near as dammit £30 a day.  So that makes £420. 2 laps is going to do at most just over a quarter of a tank, which is about £30, so thats £520 in total for 3 days fuel.

My first ever weekend i went there, spent 3 days, budgeted £600 quid and brought back loads of ****, model cars bla bla bla had loads of money. NOw i spend a bit less.

you can camp if you like which is also cheaper.
come over with us in april mate, i started a thread on it - join on with us; we\'ll have a few guys going over.  Your welcome to come out for a lap with me, should run just over 8 minutes BTG. (let the "liar" comments commence! haha)

But no, once youve been, youll want to go again and again and again. If your taking the FD, get an uprated radiator and uprated brake pads at the very least.  If your a confident driver then youll sttruggle without some AP brakes or similar and a really decent cooling setup.

any questions drop me a PM or something, ill be happy to help.

I should probably add that my pfc is running base map on pfc and I hear it runs richer on the base map just as a saftey precaution so maybe thats the reasons for my poor mpg, or the fact i drive through the wet country lanes between 3000-5000 rpm.

I have uprated brake pads and front discs which are all fairly new still. My radiator is a bit of a concern as when draining my coolent I noticed a big dent in mine, not sure how crucial that is but my temps all seem ok still?

I might come both times, if once I get the car mapped I get better mpg, then might beable to afford both times, and strip the car out, save some weight and maybe get another 1/8th of a mile to the gallon more :)

I did it with the RE:WORX Boys and had a fantastic time.

Trust me it is a hell of a track and Bob has given good advice about cooling and brakes.

It is nothing like on the TV, it is a deadly track in lives and killing motors, but you just have to do it.:yes
