Title: 12a powered hillman imp
Post by: niallypie on January 17, 2008, 09:27:36 PM
hi all, iam new tonight to the forum as i have got to the stage now where i could do with some help..... grovel.
i have been building a 12a powered 1965 hillman imp for hillclimbing and tarmac rallying and have more that a few questions. here we go.
i dont have room for the water/oil filter thing and want to go remote with an oil cooler. whats the best mod, what size of cooler, who stocks the best parts without costing the earth?
i picked up a racing beat intake manifold and a 48 dellorto on ebay so have got rid of all the messy tubes pipes etc but i think in my haste to strip of all the bits i did not want i do not know what the two things on the side of the distribitor do, was there vacums coming from the carb/manifold and are they needed?
i have lots more but help with these questions would be much appreciated
cheers

Hi Nially,
Welcome to the club.
The water oil filter housing can be changed by removing the water cooler for the oil,and using an air cooler instead,Mazda did this on RX7 first gens too, that would lower the oil filter height, would you be able to get it in then?
Then you need to get a used air oil cooler and fit it remotely from the engine.
The Mazda rotary engine must have the oil cooled as one third of engine heat is taken away by the oil, especially in the rotors.
Regards
Carl

Hi, sounds like a very cool project. Back in oz there was a 13b pp pwered imp on the hill climb circut which was blisteringly quick. Alot of imps have relocated their oil coolers and radiators to the front of the car anyway so maybe get in touch with an imp supporters club to see ow they do it. i,e what electric water pump etc they use.
 good luck with it, cheers,michael.

There are 2 vacuum units on the electronic ignition distributor, they\'ll be 1 leading, one trailing from memory. They connect side by side into the thickish spacer under the carburettor. You ask are they needed? For the standard setup, obviously you have to have vacuum for ignition control. I don\'t know what you\'re intending.
Re the oil filter, the first generation series 1 and series 2 rx7\'s both had the oil cooler under the rad at the front. you sound like you\'ve got a series 3 12A engine from the later 1985/86 cars which had the air and water cooled oil cooler.

hi, thanks for the welcome and the info. to answer a couple questions, i have relocated the radiator to the front to aid cooling and have a large open surface area and ducted the air out through the floorpan. i live in the between ayr and cumnock. i am a member of the hillman imp club forum and use it regular for tech stuff but need help with engine!!
i have mated it to a type 2 bus 4 speed with a kennedy adapter plate and stage two clutch.
i am going for an after market cooler, what size would be best in your opinion? can you recomend a company that sells a kit??
do you think the dellorto will have an outlet for the vacums or will i have to tap the manifold? how can i tell if its the electronic iqnition or the points. maybe i should take a pic and upload it, i will try and do that this weekend.
got to go now- work.
post tonight
cheers

If you go for an air cooler your best off with a 2nd generation oil cooler. The aftermarket ones are way too small for what you want. The stock mazda one is huge. Plus it has the thermostat built in, which you would need on a aftermarket jobbie. Try some of the guys at the top for the relevant bits.
You should be able to squeeze it in. Thankfully its not very tall. Have a search at threads I\'ve started in the members list for when I did my 1st gen.

As for the vac lines on the dizzy when I swapped over to the gas carb I needed to just leave them venting to atmosphere. They are there for emissions and alter the timing when the throttle butterfly is closed/opened. The tap off needs to be in a very specific position to sense the opening of the throttle butterfly. You basically tune it to the upper timing band and it uses a bit more juice at lower revs. Pip said that was how he ran his racecars :D
I\'ve run it on gas like that for almost 6 months.

Sounds like a fun project. Some pictures would be nice :Giggle

Shaun knows about the oil cooler side of things. If you wanted a Mazda one, you\'d have to put a wanted post for 1st generation FB RX7, Series 1 or 2 oil cooler from under the radiator. Question? will it work OK from back engine to front of car? I\'m not a modifier so I haven\'t a clue.
The points question is easy, besides having ignitors on the electronic distrib, as travellinbob says, take the cap off and look if there are points inside or electronic pickups. The series 3, which I think your engine\'s from was certainly electronic.

Would have thought you would be ok with the cooler further back. Just means you have much longer lines and more oil. In theory the lines should ack as additional cooling. The whole system is pressurised. You need to use decent line size. Ove a distance like that you would want -10AN lines I would have thought.

As for vac (didn\'t read question fully!) there should be nipples and a large vac line (usually for the vac assited brakes) built into the manifold. Unless the aftermarket ones don\'t have that ????

i will check dizzy tomorow for said black boxes, dont really want electronic ignition, more bits to go wrong! i will get on to the cooler trail as soon as and will relocate filter. thanks Shaun for the vacum info, thats exactly what i wanted to hear- less bits to worry about.
if it is electronic, is it poss to fit the points dizzy from the series 1 ,2?

Welcome to MRC and don\'t worry anything with a Rotary always has and always will be welcome, as are pictures, so good luck with your project.

Funnily enough I built an Imp back in 1978 and as I knew I could\'t get the power I wanted out of the Imp engine so I fitted a 1480 Cooper S engine in the back on split webbers, kept the Imp rear suspension and had driveshafts made. The gear change took a bit of sorting but we got there.

Did do that well in the dry but was o/k in the wet as it put the power down real well due to the transverse engine sitting where the back seat was making it mid engined

p.s. we enen have a section for "Other Rotary Powered Vehicles" which is where I have moved this thread to.

Hi, try that\'s new forum,http://scottish-sprinting.co.uk/flatchat/index.php?sid=0dd8051d621b370609dfc66dbf6ac4b7 and ask for WIGHT JNR for technical things and he might help as he\'s very good on imp and do you know who\'s he?, well telling you that he\'s two time British hillclimb champion
ere\'s video

and local Doune hillclimb

Or come and visit any scottish hillclimb championship circle(spell?) and find few bike-engined imp like of  Finlay Whyte or Kevin LLingworth and Graeme himself at Fintray near Aberdeen.
Good luck with your project.

No problem :D

I\'m not too sure. Usually people swap the other way because the series 3 is supposed to be more reliable. The 1st gen section on //www.rx7club.com has alot of info too, like other ways of wiring the ignition up for a stronger spark.

I think the points were only on series 1.
Besides, in my opinion and like Shaun says, people go away from points because the electronic dizzy is just about bomb proof.
