Title: brown sludge in coolant! help!
Post by: SCOOMER on February 18, 2003, 09:45:02 PM
just got my fd back from a engine rebuild, and still running it in.
Ive only covered about 350 miles keeping it under 3000rpm and not using full throttle/boost. Over the last couple of days ive tryed to start the engine and it just turns over with out firing.
but 2 nite i checked the oil and coolant levels and found brown sludge in the radiator bottle

wot do u think:confused:

Scott,

Not sure if you got my other message?

Has the coolant level gone down?

Is the oil a yucky colour also?

Let me know.

.ps Doesn\'t sound good mate - I hope it is something simple
:(   but may not be?

there is a good chance the reason it isn\'t
starting is because its flooded. fresh rebuilds don\'t
make great compression until a min of 1000 miles have gone by.
as for the stuff in the coolant, I have seen this lots with
new rebuilds, especially if the rebuilder is a little heavy
using the grease to hold the coolant o rings in place.
this extra grease gets into the coolant and floats to the
top and ends up in the over flow tank and looks like h#ll.

my 2 cents

spoke to the guy who rebuilt my engine he said, that after he flushed the radiator it mite be muk from the bottom. he told me to check the bubble separator, over flow tank and if theirs just red coolant then its just fine. so i did that and .........THERE\'S BLACK,BROWN STICKY SLUDGE STUCK TO THE SIDES BUT THE COOLANT IS RED AND WATER - LIKE
All levels are ok. and  the oil is not milky
I am also aware that during running in periods you have a low compression so starting problems may be due to that? but hav\'n
said that he told me that FD\'s eat batterys and due to the fact that its not been used for 5 weeks in the winter months it could of died?
i hope it\'s just muk churned up from the radiator, but even still it should\'nt be sticky??

Hi mate!

When a radiator is flushed it should be clear of any muck.  Were the oil coolers done also?

Coolant is red? never heard of that? should be green?

The battery will be having a hard time if you are contstanly having problems starting it.  Keep a very close eye on it all.

Be interesting to know what the reason of the rebuild was.
Still sounds a bit suspect. But definetly keep an eye on your coolant as if a water seal is gone you don\'t notice a difference in the coolant level at first.
