Title: 1st gen brake plumbing...
Post by: Archbish on January 15, 2008, 11:14:00 PM
So 18 months after removing the brake lines of the S3, I\'m a bit hazy about what plumbs into what...

I\'m assuming this is what occurs - The master brake cylinder has three outputs:

First question is am I right?
Second question is which one goes to which?

If someone can doodle a pic, or take a couple of good pics of the brake master plumbing, I\'d be most grateful....

Cheers

OJ

If you look on Mark\'s project thread i think the picture in the 5th posting will help.

Yeah, I\'ve had a look, but it\'s the connectors from the master brake cylinder I\'m trying to suss, which I can\'t quite make out...  Thanks for the idea tho!!

i cant be sure but it doesnt sound right, the bias is for front to rear, you wouldnt have a bias between left and right.

Have a look on the master cylinder, they usually have a letter stamped on them, F and R for front and rear,  3 ports is unusual,  it must be 2 for the rears and 1 for the front or the opposite way round.

Totally agree about the front to rear...  I am assuming the box on the passenger side of the firewall is the brake bias, and to determine the bias, it must have an idea of the force going into the front brake.  So (although this is through my own thought process, so draw your own conclusions), feed one from the master cylinder goes to the drivers front brake caliper.  Feed two goes into and out of the brake bias to the passenger front brake caliper (this is used by the bias to work out how much force to send to the rear), and feed three goes into the brake bias, and back out to the rear calipers...

Of course this is speculative, and has no intended resemblance to any brake system living or dead.  No brakes were harmed in the writing of this post.

the brake bias is not normally connected to the front, well it isnt on fd\'s or fc\'s  its just a resctrictor.

  • The first to the drivers side caliper.
  • the second goes to the brake bias and on to the passenger front caliper.

Yes, that is it. more detail:-
The 1st on your list comes off the bottom of the M/Cyl and goes directly to the driver\'s caliper.
The 2nd comes off the offside (middle) of the M/Cyl and goes over to the top of the Brake Bias, into port on the offside of the B/B marked \'F\'. The other \'F\' port (on the bias nearside) goes to the front N/S Caliper.
The 3rd on your list also comes out of the offside of the M/Cyl, port marked \'R\', (near the front) of M/Cyl, and then goes over to the B Bias, entering the B Bias port marked \'arrow in\' . The \'arrow out\' port from the B Bias unit goes to the rear  brakes.
\'Arrow\' ports are under the \'F\' ports on the Brake Bias, which is mounted vertically on the bulkhead, passenger\'s side.
Hope that helps.

ok paint by numbers
Front left (offside) caliper
top left brake bias
bottom left brake bias
to rear spliter
Front right (Nearside) caliper

hope this helps!! let me know if you need anything else
does this mean we are close to seeing the car?:yes

BRILLIANT!!!  Cheers guys, that is exactly the info!  I love you all!

Seriously tho, really appreciated...

As for the car...  Well, it\'s getting closer.  I\'ve a madly ambitious and hugely unlikely target of having it road legal for the Retro show at the Pod (no chance for the exiles one I reckon), so will probably be unpainted, and incomplete...

thats very strange,  i assume then that the front connection on the b/b is just being used as a straight connector so you dont have one long pipe to make and fit.

Nooo... I don\'t know for certain, but I think Archbish is right. The top ports marked \'F\' on the Brake Bias will, I suspect, have a pilot drilling down into the rear brakes part of the B Bias. probably to push a spool valve down further as front brake pressure is sensed.???
