Title: starting a 3rd gen rx7 with a flooded engine?
Post by: Philo on January 13, 2008, 04:50:15 PM
Sorry if this has been asked many times before but what is the definitive procedure for starting a 93 rx7 with a flooded engine?

There is a lot of info here but I am reading several solutions and am not sure which applies to me.

Do I just need to pull the fuse for the fuel pump and keep turning it over for 10 second bursts?

If that does not work what should I do?

Mine flooded. removed large yellow and green fuses. Turned over for two-three minutes, three to four times then waited 10 minutes.......then started.....

Not luck try again but for a bit longer, no luck remove plugs and do the same, no luck ask again !

Hope this helps.. be patient or:

I normally just put my foot flat to floor and hold turning over until it fires, it will smoke like buggery for a while then all will be well.

I usaly remove the plugs and put them on our gas hob to warm up, in the mean time Turn the motor over with the EGI fuse out. Refit the Plugs and the EGI (try and do it quickly without burning your figures) then try it. This has only failed once for me, that was because i had a bad battery.

If that does fail... Tow the car round the block and with the Ignition on let the clutch out slowly in second gear at about 20-30mph (and most importantly, leave it engaged for 50 yards) this is the most sure fire way as the spark is allot more powerful as the battery is not turning the starter at the same time and the engine is turning quicker so more Compression (in theory).

Bugger me, didn;t realise it was so hard on an FD! We restarted my mate\'s flooded FC  a fair few times by just pulling the EGI fuse, cranking it for about 10-15s, then putting the fuse back in, and it would fire right up!

:) You have obviously not seen a properly flooded Rotary. They can be a true pain in the rear.

I think the key is recognizing it is flooded quickly and not keep cranking.

Don\'t worry Si, fingers crossed you\'ll never have to do it.

As long as the FD completes it\'s warm up cycle and drops to normal revs it\'ll be fine. I\'ve never done mine anyway, and I\'m not the sharpest tool inthe box :P

The only time I ever came close to flooding mine was the first day I had it, I wasn\'t quite used to the autoexe clutch and it stalled pulling away from some lights. It coughed into life with my foot to the floor.. it smoked like buggery but started *phew*

Just make sure you have a fully charged battery, or even better a car to jump from!

Woohoo, started as soon as I put the fuses back in. Thanks for the input.
