Post by: CraigWWW on January 13, 2008, 03:54:56 PM
Hi folks,

Has anyone fitted these white dial kits before? Just want to see if they are any good?

i found that the cheap set i had like that on my civic went wrinkly after about a year which stop the rev counter working properly.

Yeah I bought this exact kit about 18 months ago.

No probs with the quality of it.  Is a little tricky to fit though, you need to remove the needles to place the new dials over each clock face, takes maybe 3-4 hours to do properly.  Looks the business.  Only thing I would add would be a dimmer, as it is on or off and is quite a bright blue in the dark of night.

Sounds like a good buy then...cheers.

i got some similar plasma dials off ebay a year ago that were multicolour, you can change the colours & brightness by pressing 4 buttons - but i cant find the company details anywhere.

Cheers guys.

Ive got a 1996 cluster and surrond coming from Japan soon so will be ordering and fitting the dials with the new clocks.

What exactly is tricky when it comes to fitting the kit?

havent got that problem and mine are a year old ;-)

tricky bit is getting the double sided tape on them and very gently bending them to slide them over the needles. dont remove the needles, recalibration is a nightmare. and mark/photograph the fuel guage needle otherwise if you knock it, you could be having a laugh on the motorway when you run out :-p

Is the wiring simple enough?

I\'ve got some. They look great at night but they do take a little time in fitting. You wont need to remove the oil, water or fuel needles, but you\'ll need to remove the tach and speedo needle.

Okay .. I just fitted mine, seemed really easy to fit... until I accidently pulled the rev counter needle off...then the white dials kept fouling the needle so stuck it down with some double sided sticky tape.

How do I recalibrate the tacho?

you can\'t really, that is why you need to be super careful.  Only way would be to take the needle off, start the car and put it back on at 800 rpm.

i didn\'t need to take mine off, just bent the dials carfully and slid them over. If you have taken the needles off, then...1. To recalibrate is easier if you have an apexi pfc and commander, if not then 2. plug the cluster back in without the front face and the whole instrument cowl and the rev will reset to 0 when you trun on the ignition, the speedo calibration is a bit harder but there is a table floating around somewhere with rev, speed and gear values so you could guestimate that way (there are a few threads on rx7club.com about this method), or 3. borrow someones GPS which measures speed (tomtom etc) and push the needle back on at a defined speed. all a bit tricky whilst driving along though, be careful!

I dont think it\'s gonna be that easy tbh. The needles are weighted and perfectly balanced, without the needle on the splindle, who\'s saying it\'s ever gonna go back to zero? It\'s still definitly worth a try though

Cheers..

I have three sets of clocks at the moment so If the worst comes to the worst, ill just swap out the whole unit!

I did manage to get the dial on without taking the needles off but it kept fouling and had to play about with it before finally using some double-sided tape to keep it flat, thats when I knocked the needle off!

Thanks for the help, will no doubt be shouting for some more when I get round to fitting the clocks in.

I do think it looks good though!

I got a similar set and have hit a snag with the line saying "locate the live wire for the vehicles dash lights"..

Anyone know which wire this is??

Pictures would be much appreciated if possible!!

PS: My electrical skills are fduking useless, but hey, I thought I\'d give fitting these a go..

Easiest place to tap for a live round that area is the cig plug wire mate.

Hey guys,
Looking at the possibility of maybe committing to thinking about buying a set of these from ebay. My clock is currently in kpm, not mph. Does anyone know if this is this going to be an issue if i buy this kit?

Cheers!
