Title: engine problem
Post by: berniec on January 13, 2008, 04:00:25 AM
hey guys im having a prob with my 1993 fd

first off i was travelling out of town a few days ago doing 50kmph started heading off out the road and was goin up a small hill, gave it a bit of pep and there was a slight kinda grindin sound so i eased off and carried on slowly to 100kmph i was traveling along id say about a mile or 2 and the car just went dead nuttin the engine cut out and i barely pulled it off the road, tried a few times to start it but no go eventually got it runnin and on idle sounds like a tractor u no chugging etc,if u go to rev the car it starts to cut out but dosent and revs up i only reved it to around 4k there sounds like no turbo but cant be sure and no way the car would drive, there is a slight scrappin sound coming from the engine but it is still runnin very rough on idle and slighty rough up the revs,im hopin its not a thrown tip but sounds like it is,feadback on the engine is its totally stock, and was rebuilt 11k miles ago and has had a service every 3k miles its nearly due its next one,one thing i did notice was the last few days the oil pressure seemed to drop slightly but the guage was never that reliable as in one day it could be just over 2 and next it be under etc,now i havnt had time to check it over but i will be gettin a compression test done any ideas on anything else i could check

any help be appreciated majorly

one thing is it needed a new clutch release bearing which might be the scraping sound but i cant be sure

first thing
if u have a boost gauge at idle is the gauge fluttering
on idle does the car vibrate-bad
warm starting is it bad
is it better cold starting
these are all symptons of a thrown tip
but check map sensor on bulkhead passenger side shd have i think its 3 pipes all connected
u wont get a turbo spooling up when in neutral
who did the rebuild

Sounds to me like it has def thrown a tip or a few.  I have chipped a tip a few times but it has always run be it roughly.  But chipping a tiny bit off one tip just puts it down on compression, where as if it went big time then it could have next to no compression.

Biggest give away is it sounding like a tractor in my experience.

Plus if it has gone in that sort of way (big) then it is more than likely you have taken out the turbo as the metal found its way out.   But as said turbo doesnt really spool on idle.

Might not be the worst, but does sound rather a lot like it unfortunately.
