Title: Alternator gets Extremly hot.... after even a minute o_O
Post by: Joeh on January 12, 2008, 08:55:45 PM
Hi everyone, here to pick your brains as usual :D

Just curious, my alternator gets very hot after a very short time of the engine running, and when I say hot, I mean, water could dance on it hot. :yes

So anyway, I guess thats not normal, but the car battery does get recharged, so I\'m not sure whats up.

Are they suppost to be that hot? Should I just get a new one? (ebay? :P)

Thanks again!
Joeh

Possibly bearings are on their way out. Have you broken any belts lately ?

get a multi meter and check the voltage from the battery as its running sounds like its over charging  shouldnt be more than about 14.4 v when running . also check earth leads and if you have one a charging relay

Thanks for your reply Shaun,
I haven\'t broken a belt recently but I could imagine you\'re right about the bearing.

Also thank you Ascaudio for your reply.
I\'m going to have a look at the charging voltage like you\'ve mentioned hopefully tomorrow ( Out of fuel :( ). Thanks a lot for the suggestion, I\'m expecting it to give me a low reading. I\'ll also check the wires and let you know how it goes :)

Thanks again !
