Title: New Front speakers - Drilling hole in Door
Post by: RussH on January 11, 2008, 06:19:21 PM
Hi,

Not long had my FD and my first job is to strip out the existing BOSE stereo. The doors are dismantled ready for Alpine components and the HU is gonna be a Pioneer DEH-P85BT. I\'ve also got an Infinity amp which I may hook up later.

There doesn\'t appear to be any room to feed the speaker wire through into the cabin - unless someone has a clever solution.:god

Do most people drill holes in the door and body? If so where?
Do you unbolt the door?
I really don\'t want to drill though something important on the other side:2eek
Please point me in the right direction:cheers

Russ

un do the check strap so your door doesnt get restricted then open carefully not to bend the wing read in and pop out both gromets going from door to wing feed your speaker cable carefully thru the rubber sleave then into the car and into the door job done

Top man...thanks for the hint:Thumbs-up

Do the gromets just lever out or are they retained from the inside?

Cheers

either way can remove door card and push them out or use neadle nose pliers and pull gently becarefull if the rubbers old they might split tender gloves
and try to pull the rubber not crimp the cable and snag it

Hi,

When you say, undo the check strap, do you mean remove the split pin or undo the 2 bolts on the door. Have undone the bolts and it doesn\'t seem to work.

Is there a guide of where the screws are that hold the drivers door trim?

Cheers

You should be able to thread an un coiled metal coat hanger through the grommit without having to remove any straps. The rubber gromit should just pop out and give you access. Fidily job though !

Just had a bit of a poke around and theres a solid white connector that blocks the hole into the cabin - doesn\'t appear to be any way of threading the speaker cable into the car:(

The car originally had the full BOSE system with the amps in the doors.....does this make difference??

Wouldn\'t have thought so. I\'m not sure if I cut a slit into it. Long time since I did it, about 3.5yrs. Have you tried the coathanger method from inside the car ? It isn\'t an easy job. If you drill a hole you will make it worse. You need a grommit on the hole and a rubber connector between the holes or it will leak into the car.

Yeah, I\'ve tried with a coathanger from inside the car but all I can see is this white connector blocking all of the hole.

It also appears ISO harness adapter I bought from Halfrauds is wrong - the pins don\'t line up.

Does anyone have the colour codes for a BOSE FD? Cheers

.......Not going well this install

I brought a wiring adaptor from Halfords (Autoleads Part no. PC2-10-4) and had no problems but I did need to connect the green and black wire to the ignition switched feed to get the Bose amps to come in.

You can download a copy of the wiring diagram from here. It gives you all the wiring colours you will need.

To get my central locking solenoid feed cables through to the door I had to remove the check strap pin. Remove the multiplug connector (releasing it from the inside by pushing the red tab out). Then from there you can feed your two cables through the top left and right corners of the Socket (car side) and drill two small cooresponding in the plug (door side). Feed the cable thorough then reconnect the plug and socket taking up the cable slack as you put it together. Fiddley

alternatively there are some rubber grommets behind the wings that lead into the foot well. REALLY fiddly to get out, and even worse to get in. i cut a small slit in the rubber sleeve and threaded the wire from the speaker, into the sleeve, through the hole and then cut small holes in the rubber grommets and threaded them on to the wire. passed the wire into the footwell and then cursed and took the skin off my knuckles as i replaced the rubber grommets

Update......

Unbolted the doors and disconnected the check strap,
Removed the rubber sleeve from the car side,
Drilled a hole through the white connector
Fed the speaker cable through the rubber sleeve and newly drilled hole.

So far so good! :)

Final thing......can\'t reconnect the sleeve at the body. How do you unclip the white connector in the body - I\'ve pushed all the tabs I can see. Which way do you push the red tab??

Cheers

Hi

Lay on your back in the foot well with the pedals by your head.  If you look up at the top of the kick panel you will see the wires heading towards the door connector.  If I remember rightly on the connector there is a red tab.  Push this towards the outside of the car using a small screwdriver.
This should allow the locking tab of the connector on the outside to move and therefore you should be able to disconnect the two halves.

Please make sure the rubber sleeve is back on properly mate.

I did the same job and didn\'t realise there was a tiny gap underneath.

Water ingress caused the pins in the connector to rot!

If I remember rightly I fed the speaker cable through the connector on the door side but drilled a small hole for the cable to pass into the cabin. This had already been done by the people who\'d installed the central locking control for the alarm.

Looks neat though, and the speaker cable is a fairly heavy gauge anyway.

But it\'s a painful job though, There\'s not a lot of space in the door opening.
