Title: Rebuild whats worth doing
Post by: Timmy on January 09, 2008, 07:02:39 PM
Got my car comp tested. And it came back dead on 2 sides of one rotor.
Anyway i was thinking is there anything i should look at getting done while the engine is out? Such as clutch change? I was planning on making the car a responsive track car in future but i don\'t think i can afford porting particuarly if they have to change a the rotor housing.

Well if it\'s dead on one side of a rotor, chances are the rotor, housing, middle and end plate\'s and turbo\'s are knackered. That is a worst case scenario though, might be much less damage. You\'ll never know untill it comes apart. Whilst it\'s out it\'s well worth putting a track/drag/street clutch depending on how you\'ll be using the car. Also change the release bearing and pilot bearing for the clutch. Do the thermal pellet mod (free) and replace the oil pressure sensor, they only cost about £25.

I\'m thinking now get it standard rebuild. This engine will only be ever on standard turbos.
Clutch wise will standard do? maybe with uprated pressure plate.

Whats the thrmal pellet mod and what does it do? i did i search and all i can find is mentions of it not actualy what it does.

The thermal pellet stops oil pressure to the rotors to warm the engine quicker. When it fails, it stops oil to the rotors causing damage. The mod just keeps it closed so oil is always supplied to the rotors.

Clutch wise, i am gonna go with this. http://www.rx7store.net/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=ZX3%2DHDSS&CartID=1

Are you thinking of rebuilding it your self?

The best thing to make your car more responsive is to get it rebuild properly and buy a PFC and have it set up by a pro.

No it will be getting done by Jason (super 7 autos). He\'s told me if the damage is bad inside he will just swap it over for a block he has already rebuilt.
I\'ve been told he really knows what he\'s doing but at the moment it is difficult to get a chance to have a decent conversation with him as i work all the hours he is at work.

change the oil metering pump, it isnt expensive but i had to get mine stripped back down to change mine after it was all together. I would change the clutch if mine was to go again.

If you\'re already having the engine ripped apart, you may as well ask how much a mild porting job is going to be. If you\'d want one at a later stage then the cheapest time would obviously be when the engine\'s apart anyway...

I would love to port it, but i probably couldn\'t afford the extra insurance and the remap at the moment.
What can stock ports flow?
I\'ve been thinking about getting a cheap failed engine and slowly rebuilding it in my own time with unbreakable tips and a bridge port.

On a Rebuild (running twins) i would not worrie so much about the Internals but get the Rats nest Repiped and have the Solenoids checked, Also have the Engine loom inspected for damage (this is often overlooked and it has caused me nightmares with ghost sensor issues).

it looks realy good but i cant rev it past 4k yet as its still running in. boo.
so not realy shure whats its like.
pip might be expensive, but if it was a saxo i would go somewhere where they have to be cheap to get business. But for the rex ill go somwhere thats good enough to be expensive and still be too busy.

There is a well known saying you get what you pay for...

That is pip all over, he may be expencive at times but he is top draw, but just do what he says on run it etc (he does it for a reason)
