Title: AAARRRGGGHHH (Im stressed)
Post by: banana-man666 on January 07, 2008, 10:40:18 AM
Ok so I have an \'88 EGI and on a long motorway run im returning an average of 10 mpg.

I always heard they were bad on fuel but surely there is something seriously wrong here.

Please help, any suggestions welcome

Dave

Book it in for a remap as you might be running very rich hence the over-fueling :)

Yeah mine runs about 27mpg on the motorway at 70mph average speed. Mines a TII don\'t know how different the EGI is.

........... or even worse you might have a fuel leak.

try new plugs and leads first ( cheapest end ) - but that is terrible MPG

the only time i would expect to see that if you was driving at 70mph in 3rd for extented periods

I have checked for a fuel leak and come up with nothing.

Plugs are my next choice but there are so many different recommendations Im stuck on which to get

Get standard plugs - have a look around this subforum or call the vendor of your choice.

First though, pull the old ones and have a good look at them...

How does it start? does it fire on the button or take some cranking?

Does it Idle ok?

Whilst you have the plugs out, check the leads are in good order.

Starting has been getting progressively worse last week or 2 along with it flooding easier.

It has never idled ok since I picked it up just over a month ago.

Im towing it over to my garage today cos it just wont start any more, I shall take a good look at it there

Sounds like you have leaking injectors at the very least.

Out of interest, how easy is it to turn the engine over by hand? If theres little resistance then you may have found your problem :(

Well new plugs should make a difference - get some premix in there as well.  Make sure you suirt some engine oil in through the plug holes before you replace the plugs - should help you get it going a bit easier. :)

Is the idle smooth, or does it bounce around?

The idle bounces around.

I had a good look at it today and the plugs were worse than I have ever seen, the air filter is black as night and the oil is disgusting.

Ordered all fluids and parts for a thorough service on friday so I hope that sorts my biggest problems out

I was thinking sticky injector myself.

if it won\'t start it may be flooded out of its mind.

Try the curb side apex seal test when you try to clear the fuel.

EGR fuse out, then remove the top front rotor spark plug, crank it over and listen to the Pss noise it makes , replace that plug and remove the rear top plug and crank. The Pss noises should sound roughly the same (same volume and timing)

If this is all good.

try getting it running (if badly flooded may need towing round the block) then whilst on idle disconnect the Fuel pump (i usally unplug it at the big plate under the rear seats but i think you could pull the Fuse) this will effectively run the car out of fuel, if it starts ok once its stopped and you have plugged it all back in you have a bad Injector.

Quote from: banana-man666The idle bounces around.
Does the idle get progressively worse, I.e. it starts ok but gets worse until it cuts out or is it the same all the time (from first start)?

Also what Rpm is the idle?

I did manage to get it started earlier by towing it down the road with a volvo although I did have to slip it all the way into 4th to do so and it ran like a bag of spanners afterwards till taking out the plugs and cleaning them up a little

Idles at 1000 up to 1200 rpm

have you upped the idle?

Also how long did you run it for? does it kick out LOTS!!! of smoke? and does it get better the more you run it or make no difference?

Just out of interest, have you had a look round it for air leaks etc? I don\'t think it would be a leak (too dramatic) but its worth looking.

How smooth is the engine at idle? (other than the fluctuating speed) Is it \'chugging\' at all?
Does it rev easily?
Title: AAARRRGGGHHH (Im stressed)
Post by: banana-man666 on January 10, 2008, 10:53:23 AM
There is a slight hesitation when you put your foot down from idle but it does rev freely when it gets going

More problems now.

Serviced it a week ago (new plugs, oil and oil filter, air filter) and it was running well till last night, parked up at a mates and the rad was bubbling engine pinking from the heat and all but a litre of oil had burned off.

Poured in some fresh oil and water found some oily deposits in my overflow tank and a noticable amount of limescale.

Any ideas? The idle still runs lumpy and the temp guage didnt rise over 1/3.

Thanks
Dave

I really need some help on this

hummm , best idea at this moment intime

i would flush the entire cooling system

1 - remove the rad hoses
2 - remove rad if possible
3 - flush with about 2000 gallons of water

rebuild it all and see what happens - if you are still getting a lot of gunk in the expansion tank etc.. - then ... errr.... it could be terminal

Well funny you should say that as its exactly what I have planned for today.

If that doesnt sort it what would I be looking at?

I hate to say it but it does sound a water seal failure, especially (if I read it right) the bubbling rad.
The flooding is also symptomatic of it nearing rebuild time :(
Try compression testing it (search forum), also search on youtube or yahoo videos for some RX-7 water seal failures and see if it\'s similiar to what you\'re experiencing.

Found the videos your reffering to and have now found that my water seals are goosed.

Was really hoping for a simple (cheap) fix to this, seems like that is not the case though.

Engine rebuild here I come
