iv come to sell my car and looking on the autotrader theres people giving them away 2900quid for one with 40k on the clock, why are people insiting on making such a brilliant car worthless, and it winds me up when theres people selling d reg rs turbos for 4-6grand... its purely insane if we genuinly stood back and looked at what both cars are really worth a door handle off an rx7 is worth more than any ford....really wound up
I agree with you mate.... a lad I know is selling his series 1 RS Turbo & he will get 5k for it..... basicaly the same as a mint original 92 rex!!!! it\'s so wrong! Think it\'s all down to the crap imported versions knocking around, dragging the price of the average rex through the floor!!
Jono
yes, but Ford RS\'s have a massive following in the UK, rx\'s don\'t really have a massive following anywhere in Europe
it\'s probably because there\'s problems with them and they\'re hoping you will get blinded by the price. One with 40k on the clock has probably had the clocks changed as well.
ford classics ie rsturbo/3 or 4 door cossies etc allways hold their price the average rex is just too troublesome with mot/ins and fuel consumption
but iv had allot to do with fords in my past and i can honestly say they are crap, in comparison to an rx7 which for their age are bursting at the seams with technology its insane, and an rx7 was designed and built to be a car that would be happy on a track an rs turbo is a normal run of the mill escort with a turbo a prehistoric injection system and a stripe down the side... i might donate my car to a museum, id rather do that than give it away for peanuts, iv prob put about 7grand in petrol in the thing last year alone lol
The RX market has been destroyed by cheap imports.
When I was first looking to buy an RX five years ago they were like hens teeth, I think there were six in the country to choose from.
When I came to sell mine a few monthe ago there were about 80 on autotrader - simple supply & demand I\'m afraid.
John
Could boil down to the scare stories about RX7`s.
Soon has someone comes on here asking about buying a RX7, they are told either, they use a lot of fuel or start saving for a rebuild, at least with a ford, theres lots of spares in the scrapyards.
Mick
Don\'t forget the ever increasing cost of juice! Not a happy prospect.
Then the fact the UK is obsessed with the plate / age of the car, and new cars are also so cheap compared to how they used to be.
You think theres loads of rx7s for sale??? You wanna check out how many mkiv supras are on trader...over 100 at the moment...compared to about 40 rx7s...and the TT supras are still holding their values just about...
Its the engines on these cars....every aspect of them - HIgh maintenance, scare stories, relatively high fuel consumption and the obvious emissions and insurance issues.
You do also need to remember that 1992 was 16 years ago.... i bet theres some people on here who drive FDs that couldnt even talk when their car was made lol

have to agrree, always more supras about and they have held thier value superbly.
The bottom line is they have more drawbacks than advantages in this market and climate.
and the cheap (sh!t) imports coming in is more the nail in the coffin i think.
It\'s basic economics - people have to sell their cars for one reason or another (and I doubt I\'d be guessing wrong if I say it may well be because of the running costs that they were warned about before) and we\'re in a very slow market at the moment. So the only way to get someone to bite is by lowering the price until the cost peanuts.
IMHO what this\'ll mainly do is make any half-decent FD cheap as chips and thus not worth fixing; the really good stuff probably won\'t be affected as badly price-wise but your average used example will.
I\'m not looking forward to potentially have to sell my FD in a years time - depending on where prices are going I\'m seriously considering putting both the FC and the FD in storage instead of just the FC.
i think we should start an alience to force the prices up, and burn down the houses of these people giving their cars away... a bit drastic yes but very effective i might just put mine up for 30grand
I blame insurance companies making it impossible to own ! :Grrr
my insurence has dropped a bit this year its 550 tpf&t now
Quote from: yehreallyI blame insurance companies making it impossible to own ! :Grrr
I don\'t think they\'re any worse insurance-wise than Skylines and similar cars.
At the end of the day, what do you expect? If you stack one, it\'ll cost a bomb to fix. Insurance companies are in the game to make money, so everytime somebody posts "oops, lost the back end at \'10mph\' and took out a whole bus line", our premiums go up.
Quoteiv come to sell my car
So, how long have you owned it?
What did it cost?
What do you hope to get?
I paid 11k for mine five years ago and sold it for 8
Not taking inot account the money I spent along the way inc a rebuild of course - I don\'t think that\'s too bad.
supply and demand, simple as that. People ar not too worries about losing a wee bit of money sometimes when selling a car in a hurry and eventually it will have a knock on effect and the price will continue to drop. No doubt in my mind that the series 1 fb rx7 is a way better car than any early ford but the value wont correspond. I think it is sad htat the fd is worth so little but until they stop coming as cheap imports and as soon as people stop whinging a bitching about thier \'frail\' engines etc t will be a better place to sell one.
There\'s no point getting depressed. Just laugh at the mugs paying too much for crap cars. I intend keeping mine for a long time so i don\'t think too much about the sh1te prices of the fd
yeah true. i have a s1 rs turbo and an fd, and as much as i love the s1 its not half the car and not as reliable. melted pistons and burst headgaskets are a common thing. but its from 1985 and made by ford so there arnt many left! but there was only 3k difference in price and after owning them both for 2 and 6 years i know that rx\'s are going too cheap for what they are!

Same here, mine was bought as a toy and unless i win the lottery i cant ever imagine selling it.
Bulla
i bought mine as a second car and would rether scrap/break it than sell it as i have spent a arm and a leg and a kidney on it
but they are not practical really
mega fuel bills/terrible fuel economy/and high emmissions are just a few of the probs
my early years of ownership were not good ones
thankfully i let carl have mine to put right and am hoping when fully mapped i will appreciate it more
if i was handy with a spanner i would prob do the conversion myself as spartacus did all his at home and seems to have done a pucker job
I look at it this way, for the money I could not find a nicer looking, better handling, better performing and endlessly modifyable car than the RX7 I have in the colour I want. I dont plan on selling mine anytime soon. Age doesnt bother me as the design to me is timeless plus with my private plate on it most assume it\'s 2000-> anyway.
I imagine in a few years time, when a good few more are written off or scrapped then the price of them will start to rise as it will be more of a classic. Plus Japan hasnt got an endless supply, as I always search for them at auctions or when im over in Japan i\'ve notice a steady decline in the numbers of them over the past couple of years.
Dont worry about it, just enjoy you cracking little sports car!
Although saying that there is a series 2 rs turbo in the back of our garage. It\'s our shops equivalent to a stress ball! ;)

id take 3800 for it, if its gonna be less than that due to these price dropping mother truckers then id rather put it at the back of my garage an in 13years when my lad is old enough to drive il pull the sheet back and show him what cars were like when they had wheels and you had to put this petrol type stuff in lol
Ahhh this ol subject :2Rolleyes i was thinking this while driving home from york today. as a lot of people say its a blend of cheap examples, insurance, and horror stories. Service is a bit of a pain but hey whats 2 hours work tops every 3 month? or 3000 miles. :Thumbs-up
I was debating is it worth bringing the car up to A1 standard for when i come to sell it. :wiggle
It\'s teh same everywhere - when i went to sell my 2000 200sx I looked around and they were going for peanuts. I put mine up for a higher price, and you know what? I got it.
The reason being, that, as far as i\'m concerned, the car was fitted with quality mods, thoughtfully tuned, and very well looked after. A friend of mine was looking for one about the same time, and i looked at quite a few of the cheaper ones with him. They were all sheds, almost invariably \'drift spec\' - meaning fecked. :(
I ended up selling mine fo rabout 2k more than the cheaper examples, and almost as much as I paid for it nearly 2 years earlier. I completely believe this was down to the way in which it was cared for.
How arrogant do i sound?!?! Don\'t mean to, it\'s just i\'m very proud of my vehicles, and hopefully it shows when it comes to sell.
When I was looking for an FD it was the same - the market seems to polarise at the moment - I looked at a fair few cheap cars, and every single one seemed cheap for a reason - I looked at 4k FD\'s that were rusting through on strut turrets, wouldn\'t start warm or cold, had shoddy bodywork repairs evident, had been fitted with cheap mods, etc etc. All I\'d say to someone looking at the cheap cars is to properly go over them, there may well be a reason for them being cheap. Then look at a more expensive version - see the difference ;)
I looked at a car that was double the cost of one of the cheap ones i saw - if only the colour had been right, i would have bought it there and then - and that was the first higher price example i saw.
the 2nd hand perf car market is on its knees
look on supra forums and there are cars on there that are quality still selling 6months later
there is so much choice out there
impreza p1 going for 10-11 grand
modded supras 12000
its very hard to get good money for perf cars and the rex has a very sullied reputation as regards reliability more so than other perf cars
cheap imports for 4 grand that then pop 3 weeks later and u have another group of people saying the engines are crap
i have had 2 engine go and were rebuilt by a reputable tuner but that made no difference
first one popped 2 tips and second one compression was crap hardly surprising people are wary of them
its a fantastic looking car but a virtual minefield to own
SiH thats what i\'m thinking of doing, a well looked after clean example will always carry a premium :) The engines are the main bugbear ive heard so many horror stories and lies from people at work who "know" what they are talking about! :2Rolleyes (as in they watch topgear)
The MRC is a great place to dispell a lot of these lies and stories, yes the engines go at usualy arround 60k but its not a golden rule! the engines dont just "go" because they hit a magic number there is usualy a reason. such as poor fueling to a cheap supporting mod dieing.
i was reading rx7 club forum a while ago and a guy was claiming the prices of rx7\'s supras etc ( he called them japanese muscle cars) are going to increase!!
he said it had something to do with old american muscle cars being expensive as people had grown up with them but never had a chance to own them and therefore the next genertion of drivers would pay up 50k for a decent stock supra... personally i dont see that happening
Now check this car out;http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/330769.htm
Its listed twice at present on piston heads as above and on page 5 too. how quickly they have put a rebuild engine in it with few days for cheap?:2Rolleyes This car has changed hands few times now; on e-bay and piston heads and still going. This is a prime example of people killing the market for fd\'s by doing deals like these to make quick couple hundred quids.:3Confused

I can see that happening, but it\'ll be another 15-20 years down the line. American musclecars used to be very reasonably priced about 15 years ago and really good ones have gone through the roof in the past 3-4 years. But these are cars that are in incredible condition - they are literally better than new, and I\'m not talking about the ebay version of "better than new", but cars that have panel gaps which are way better than what Detroit ever managed, show paintjobs and are correct down to the little colour marks put on various parts during the assembly. Oh, and they\'re sporting without fail the very rarest combinations of options, biggest engines etc. These cars are now bought by the people who lusted after them when they were new and can afford to throw a big wedge at a car.
But keep in mind that the more vanilla models are still comparatively affordable - people can still afford to buy a 60s Mustang, but most people can\'t afford a Shelby GT500 or a Boss with a 428ci engine, because the latter two command mega-money.
In fact, I do expect similar things to happen with Japanese performance cars, but it\'ll be way down the line. Say, those members of ours who want an FD now but can\'t afford one, or at least not to keep it very long. I wouldn\'t be surprised if some of them will want another one 20-30 years down the line once the kids left for good.
That said, if you intend to make any money out of it I\'d guess the storage fees are going to eat up all potential gains :).
Quote from: SiHBear in mind RX7Club is a US based site, so that may not be entirely relevant in the uk ;)
Yep, would make a big difference, not many left hooker RX7\'s about while there\'s are loads that are RHD from Japan.
Woah a car with a rebuilt engine for 4k?! What the hell are they doing? (other than undercutting everyone) I remember seeing that car as well a few times Laeeq the nasty red grill reminds me.
This proves just how stupid its getting most builders charge around 3k for a rebuild but lets say he did it himself? parts are what 1.5k? (depending on whats needed, and to what level its done) the car cost what another grand and half? (which i cant really see happening)
http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/302974.htm Well it looks like it sold for 2.4k with a "good" engine that was compression tested.
oh yawn...what a surprise...the old stuck record returns. I think someone geneuinely beleives they are some sort of martyr for thier cause and that they would rescue every FD given the opportunity....
Leon - its not rebuilt dude.... that initial ad youve posted was my ad...the engine was good. There is a receipt in the car for a used engine at rotechniks but not a rebuilt one hence why my ad says "good" engine.
The car hasnt had a rebuild.
ive decided that due to the market never to sell my rx7. problem solved!
Jit - Fair snuff, just got that impression from the next advert posted by laeeq that it had. :Tongue1
QuoteIt had the engine rebuild not long ago costing £4000 so it still has plenty of life left in it.
The advert you did was fair and i think what you said at the end was true, you wont find a running rx7 for less! :yes
when i sold it, it was a bloody good engine....now....im not too sure....
as has been pointed out, that car has changed hands a few times in the last 3 months (3 times i beleive...once when i bought it, then again when i sold it and again when it was sold on again....i do reckon it was overheated by the guy who got it from me when he ignored my warnings to change the rad)

Try not to take this the wrong way, but going back 3 years or so ago the average FD price was about 8K. Now its dropped to about 4-5K.
Fair enough, you paid 4K to buy yours 18 month ago and due to continuing depression in the market you will loose a bit, but there are plenty of us just takin it on the chin. This was a 30K odd sports car when new for gods sake! You bought cheap, why cant others now?
Just my 2p
Chris
I think the other problem is: someone looks as the price for a well done single turbo\'d rex and then the price of a bog standard one. They go for the bog standard one thinking "4k, that\'ll do me"....then they think, "Oh, i\'ll just add this, or just do that"....then they turn it into a single turbo monster at huge cost.....then turn around and say, "Hhmm maybe I should have bought that single turbo\'d one from before...it was fantastic value for money" of course....once they have learnt what most of us have already.
People don\'t always think that enthusiasts such as ourselves re-search the best way (allbeit, not the same way) to do these cars. True, you can never trust that the person before you has taken the time you would do...but that is remedied by a quick search...
So my point would be not to cut corners...use a bit of common sense...
:D
Quote from: Nuk Su Kowyou can never trust that the person before you has taken the time you would do.
Exactly. People listen to \'horror stories\' and the majority of the population, when faced with a ford and an rx7, will opt for the ford due to what they perceive to be reliability.
And I still see RS Cosworths knocking around for over fifteen grand! It\'s a good lil car, but it\'s not fifteen grands\' worth. That happened when I sold my bike last time around, because most people ride ten miles a year seemingly, and I ride ten thousand, I had to sell a 6 grand bike for £three and a bit because the mileometer read four thousand miles more than most bikes in the country in the same condition. Go figure. The second hand market is a frustrating place to be man, people are buying for \'reliability\' and economy. I buy because I want to tinker and burn fuel at an alarming rate. There aren\'t many people like me around though...
QuoteI buy because I want to tinker and burn fuel at an alarming rate. There aren\'t many people like me around though...
You got a site full of here for your guide :Hammer
But you\'d think that if someone decided on getting an RX-7...and they researched it just a little, that they would either want a standard twin turbo with a rebuilt engine (even though when they hear, rebuilt engine they switch off and don\'t realise it\'s not a bad thing) or something that has been done..
Anyway...mine\'s up for sale, a beautiful rebuilt single turbo so feel free to treat yourself someone :chat
surely its only a matter of time before getting a rebuild simply isnt going to be worth it?
If freshly rebuilt RX7`s are selling for 5/6kish....and the cost of a rebuild can easily reach 4k, its simply not worth getting the engine rebuilt when the time comes...you would only make maybe 1/2k max. Would be more cost effective to simply sell for spares....
Or set it on fire and claim on the insurance :xconfused :(
Either way, unless the price of rebuilds come down (which aint going to happen) it does seem like its only a matter of time before a lot of these great cars simply get broken for spares :(
i think u have hit the nail on the head if a good car goes for 6k and a blown one 2k for spares then paying 3-4k for a rebuild just isnt worth it as its not to say it will sell anyway
as it is i doubt i wld get more than 12k for mine and that has had shedloads done to it
i have worked out i could get about 10 for it if broken and not have to bother with tyre kickers

This is probably why so many people are deciding to rebuild enignes themselves, the price is too high and there isnt an option for alot of people faced with a 3-4K rebuild cost.
Chris
I\'m aiming at a rebuild cost for mine at about £500-600. However, it has had one already, so many of the bits should be good. Front rotor is fine so i won\'t have to rebuild that. Does obviously depend on the damage of the rear rotor, but if it aint too bad, it shouldn\'t be horrendously expensive.

That is good to hear, but i`m afraid to a vast majority of RX-7 Owners, paying a specialist to do a rebuild is the only real option they have. (including me)
Plus, when I was looking for my RX, I wouldnt even bother looking at the cars which had DIY rebuilds, I just wouldnt trust the work to be done to a high standard. Also you dont get a warrantee of course. I think quite a lot of new buyers would think like this.
(not having a go as i`m sure your rebuild will be tip-top)

True but when you look at the rebuild cost of other performance Jap cars that are putting out 400+bhp, the rex doesn\'t seem all that bad. Ok, it can be argued that the engines go for longer, but they do go and when they go, you\'re talking about lots of money. So moving away from the standard RX-7\'s and use the tuned ones as an example, yes ok, it\'s going to cost anywhere from 1.5k to 3k for a rebuild but these are brand new engines that you know are going to have at least 60k out of them, more if you don\'t, pardon my phrase, tune the b*ll*x off them?
And as for making money on a car, car\'s for me have never been an investment...i\'ve never done something to a car and thought, what would I get back on it? because to me it rarely works out that way. So you buy a car like this where the worst case scenario is an engine rebuild during your ownership, but getting the results that you can out of them, I think there\'s worse things you could do!
So I do see your point but we all bought the car for a reason and even though there are more cheap imports coming over, it\'s still going to be admired and wanted.
Edited to say: I understand that not all RX-7 owners feel the need to tune these car\'s and are quite happy to have them remain standard, but there will always be a market for these car\'s because of the known fantastic all roundedness and they will always be modded. I\'m not saying modding is the way forward, far from it...but these cars will always have that appeal....as for warranties...unfortunately a lot of them arn\'t worth the paper they\'re written on....(flame suit on)
Yeah I do see your point mate, but i`m purely thinking of people who drive standard-ish cars (like myself), who cant afford to tune them up to 400bhp and single turbo`s etc.
When my engine goes (hopefully not for a while), i`ll be left with a mint RX which is worth maybe 3/4k in bits, and worth only 5/6k with a fresh rebuild. Which could cost up to 4k+.
Standard-ish RX7`s just wont be worth rebuilding....not really, not unless you want to keep it for another 60k miles. (which hopefully I will :D )
So the answer is easy really then, save up and go mad on it...;)
Sir Yes Sir! :D lol
Best advice i\'ve heard this year!
Or sell yours for 6k, save 4 grand and get one with a fresh rebuild and with all the goodies on it...hahahaha :evillaugh
So maybe whoever comes on now asking, "What to look for when buying a rex" should be answered with "A non cheap import that has had a rebuild or if you can get insired, has all the goodies already on it"
:cheers :Hammer :rollin

True, but in the end the rarity value will push the prices back up when there are less on the road.
The other problem is the fact that the housings and associated hardware for the 13b, 13bRE, 13bT, 13bREW, etc won\'t be made forever, the renesis engine uses different housings, rotors etc so rebuilds will become difficult and even more expensive as parts become scarce (long time off yet but...)
The trouble is theres too many crap cars out there.
Theres nothing DECENT out there between 6-8k really its all either above that price with major mods or below and not in a desirable condition.
Unless Trev wants to put his up for sale again :-)
His was the sort of car, that sits at the 7-8k mark and is worth the money. thing is you lot dont want to sell them. hehe, so people like me have to hold out.
and the others below the 6k mark get desperate to sell, so they drop the price more and more, and you lot complain, and were even further away from getting them loverly owners club examples off your hands HEHE
;-)
Looks like a similar situation with supra\'s at the momment as well. alot of crap about, and then a gap to the highly modded 9-12k stuff.
all cars are cheap at the moment!. supras, skylines etc all sell for way less than they did a few months ago. saw a supra 3.0 for 2k . it was ok - a little dirty and a few marks... but that should be a 3 - 4k car!. RX7s are getting very old. people have to balance age/ costs and decide what they will pay. yes i agree that some RS turbos sell for 5k - thats insane! but then RXs can sell for 12k. likewise i have seen some rough RS turbos sell for £500!!!! ALL cars suffer from depreciation. take a guy who buys a new mondeo..... 20k??? in a year he will be lucky to get £8k back!
RX7 owners have been treated very well in recent times as their cars have held their money well and had none or little depreciation. looks like basic economics has caught up with the RX market!
This is what was happening in NZ and Australia 13 years ago.... When I bought my first Rotary, people couldn\'t give them away. I liked people saying to me that it was a \'rotissery\' (going to cook itslef) etc, etc. That they were hard to get parts for, and few people knew how to fix them, I didn\'t care. Fast forward to last year when I sold mine to come to the UK, I had people falling over themselves to buy it, but I was after the peak, if you look on www.trademe.co.nz (http://www.trademe.co.nz), you\'ll see that rotarys have been stuffed into any engine bay they can fit into, and even some they can\'t!!
Basically, I made a wee bit of money on it, not bad after 8 years of ownership! (inflation and opportunity cost probably errode any gain I made, but lets not be picky!!)
I see similar here, BUT, one major difference: Japanese cars will never get the following here in the UK, because of the close proximity of other sports margues (german/italian) and peoples attitudes to them (cheaper interior/smaller sized engines/etc).
In NZ/AU Japanese cars are the norm, anyone driving a BMW or Merc is very, very rich (because they come from so far away/higher tariffs etc) (AU not so much because of the excellent Holdens/fords.)
Anyways, I do think it will get better, once we spread the gospel of Japanese cars, but just not to the following in NZ/:King AU.
All completely IMHO.
Some good points there:)
Just my tuppence, I haven\'t posted in a year or so due to various commitments, but the cost of standard parts is prohibitive for engines. I know the price that the engine builders pay for parts, its a third of the price you and I can get. I paid 2k for my rebuild in parts, and now, with new contacts, could get the lot for 600. And the rotary engine is a very simple build. I have built piston and rotary engines, and rotary\'s have far fewer components. No cam drive, pistons, rods, balancers to assemble. No tappets to gap, expensive cams/valves etc to purchase. Just a die grinder and a porting template (simplification). It took me about 40hrs to remove, strip and rebuild and replace my engine. Assuming I paid 1000 for housings and seals etc and charge 4k for the engine, thats £75/hour. Not bad. Assuming I get twice as fast with practice, i\'m laughing.
Ergo, I\'m in the wrong business!
My point is, second hand RX7 values are inversely proportional to engine rebuild prices.

Hi Jonathon,
Not sure where you are getting your rebuild parts from but I certainly don\'t get them for very much less than anyone else can,and to say that engine builders can get the parts for a 3rd of the price that they retail for is a long long way from reality.Mazda give a max of around 10% discount for the amount of parts that we buy,and even from Japan direct with the duty it\'s still pretty near to the price over the counter.
If you really are able to get your parts for one third of the cost here with all duties and tax paid then please let us all know where from and we can pass the vast savings onto the cutomers.

Carl
i have to say labour rates even small garages are 50-70 an hour so do the maths say a day to get it out and in again 560.00 minimum then another day and a half to strip and rebuild 800.00 giving min labour of 1400.00 then you have to factor in the overheads of the garage as no one can just work for minimum turnover or they go out of business so just labour wise and a bit of profit garages have to charge 1500 labour and then parts..it soon mounts up
thats only working on 20hrs labour add ur parts on and bingo thers the rebuild cost
Ref: Rebuilds.
Now there are five or six professional companies offering rebuilds and as far as I know they are all around the same cost.
If it were economical to offer a rebuild sevice considerably cheaper I would think at least one of them would be offering it, or someone who thinks it\'s easy money would set up there own business and undercut their costs by 25%, easy money.
Think of all the work you could get being 25% less than anyone else.
My guess as to why this hasn\'t happened it that the general price these guys charge is about right.
Big step to sign up on a lease, rates, staff, equipment, insurance, heat, light, the list goes on.

what about atempting to rebuild the engine before its blown.
as im guessing u dont get the same amount of damage to the engine this could save money? though im not expert, just an idea :D
