Title: I don\'t believe it!!!
Post by: syebba on January 05, 2008, 07:45:55 PM
Hi guys,i could do with your advice:eek:
I bought the mk1 Rx7 off mrbishi,cost £1600 & i\'m happy with it.
I was also looking at a 1st generation series 3 RX7,but i thought it overpriced @£5500 ono.
Its only done 38000 miles,is immaculate, red & everythings standard. Its a B reg/1985,rotechniks have described it as in the top 3 of its marque in the country.
I offered the guy £4000,he said no way,but hes come back to me & will accept £4000[£1500]off his original asking price.
He had the car up for sale a couple of weeks before xmas, not a good time to sell a car!!
Mileage is genuine, condition is top notch.
Is it worth £4k,do you reckon??????????????:xconfused
Problem is i love the mark1 ive got, arghhhhh.
Let me know what you think?:xconfused :god :wave
Cheers stuart....

the mk1 is a rare car now, i have seen a lot of s3\'s try to make big money, i would say it depends on what you want from the car, if it is a very good origional car and you want to keep it for say 10 years it may be a good investment but if you want to enjoy a classic car stick with the s1 you have, as its not standard it wont hold its money like the s3 IMO

I think Mark has pretty much sumed it up if you want a car to use then stick with what you\'ve got. The other car you will be scared to let out of your site if you take it out anyware. But by the same token could prove to be a wise buy if you can keep it mint and low mileage. It is really down to what you want the car for.

Thanks for advice guys.
The mk1 i have can easily be made standard & i know a supplier in Oz who has most parts for it in stock brand new.The mk1 is very clean & tidy with just a few bubbly spots, the paint is very, very good as are electrics, gearbox & engine even though its done 122k,i suspect something must of been done to the engine as it pulls so well & dosent smoke.
I will only do 1500 miles per year maximum,& i intend to keep an RX7 untill i\'m 6ft under!!Only reason i would sell is if a business abroad i\'m working on took up all of my time & i had to emigrate.
SO to sum it up,i will only do 1000>1500 miles a year,so which car is likely to be worth more in say 10>15 years.
The rarity of a mk1 with much higher mileage & made standard throughout or the mint mk3 still with a low mileage in 10>15 years of approx 50000>55000 on the clock!!!
Sorry its not the most exciting thread, but both these cars i love with my heart,so maybe i should think with my head, thats where your knowledge/perception/foresight etc would be handy!!:Thumbs-up
MPK490P...........Your thread was interesting on the build of your car, youve put a lot of work into it,lovely car!:3gears-rh

My take on it would be that a mint car is easier to keep that way, hence it\'d be more likely to appreciate in value or at least keep its value.

IMHO the mileage is not the be-all and end-all as very low mileage cars do come with their own sets of problems, caused by them standing around for too long. I\'ve made the mistake (twice!) of buying a low-mileage classic and in both cases had to spend quite some money just to undo all the problems caused by the car standing.

We\'ve got a very late series 3 with 49000 miles on the clock. It was 10th from the last VIN No. so I figure last days production in Hiroshima. Similarly Dave Collins has that lovely S3 that featured in October 2007 performance car, with 52000 miles or so on the clock. I reckon ours is worth £3750 or thereabouts so yes, £4000 for a real minter is not unreasonable.
The point is, we wouldn\'t sell ours, not even for higher offers, so if one comes up that\'s so good and you really want a car that will be a stunner for years to come, you sometimes have to push the boat out.
In reality, from what I\'ve read on some of the FD posts, £3000 or thereabouts will only buy a good engine rebuild and one guy spent \'000\'s on an FB leather retrim, so it\'s all relative.
Title: I don\'t believe it!!!
Post by: David Nock (RIP) on January 06, 2008, 11:50:32 AM
Also, it\'s been said already that you can keep a minter tidy fairly easily. Plus I wouldn\'t worry about using it or parking it in car parks. We\'ve never had an FB touched in 20 odd years! The FB seems to get respect.
Last year we were in Hull Centre and I told some patrolling foot police that our little car was all alone and frightened in the local off-street car park. They only went out of their way to check on it! Hows that!

Thanks guys.
Sounds like £4k for the mint s3 is not unreasonable.
I\'ll have a good think!!:Thumbs-up

Hi as the owner of a low mileage first gen I must admit I do worry about leaving it in car parks but then again I may be a bit paranoid. Can I suggest that if you do buy it and it has been stood for a while then change all the hoses as mine were as hard as rock and the tyres were also starting to crack with age. Also changed filters, battery, oil and coolant etc and now going through all the suspension bushes etc as these all perish with age even when not used.

The car is used on sundays by present owner & is taxed & mot\'d.
I,m having another look at it tomorrow, its only 11 miles from my place.
I\'ll check hoses etc, still has original exhaust on with all the associated pollution attachments.

Keep the S1.  Just that little bit classier (I\'ve an S3, so S3 owners, please don\'t take that the wrong way!!).

I do prefer the styling of the mark 1.
Difficult choice as the s3 is immaculate,it needs nothing & as i work frequently abroad is probably the sensible choice,as i wont have much time to fiddle around with cars!!!
Heart says s1,little brain says s3.
I\'m off to look at s3 again today.
Oh if only i had unlimited deep pockets & the space i would have both of them!!
Back to reality with a bump!
Cheers for your thoughts/advice:Thumbs-up

Right, I\'m a yob in a car park. Thinks...
This funny Mazda thing might go a bit.
I can get in here ever so easy.
I can easy break the steering lock.
Wheres the bonnet catch..... quick..... can\'t find it! ...Aah there it is.
WTF!!!!!
Right now, I\'m a smart boy, so I can try and start it.... Something\'s wrong with the automatic choke.....
Right, I\'ve found out it\'s a manual choke and the engine is up and down like crazy. It\'s stalled pulling away!!!
Finally... I can\'t turn the steering wheel, \'cos my arms can only work playstation buttons...
Oh leave it here!!

Ok,just come back from seeing the car, scrutinised every inch of it.
Paint looks like its just come out the factory, interior totally mint apart fom slight 5mm tear on drivers side door panel, thoroughly checked all paperwork & service intervals all 100%.
Wear on steering wheel, pedal rubbers, under chassis is minimal & consistent with 38000 miles.
Rear spoiler very good, but slight surface cracks appear if you bend it,just age.
Theres a small indentation on plastic spoiler on drivers side, but the paints not damaged.
I really went to see it to find every imperfection,as i love the s1 i\'ve got,but the car is just immaculate & i cant criticise it!!!
Mot\'s due soon,so the owner has said the best price he will let it go for is £4750 with a years ticket.
I thought he would take £4k,but he,s a tough cookie to deal with!!!
Rotechniks were right when they said it was in the top 3 of this marque in the uk,it looks like its 3 years old,not 23 years old!!!!
I\'ll have a think & get back to the vendor, its a bit more than what i wanted to spend, but i know i wont find another one like this again!!!
Cheers stuart:wave

I\'d say that if it\'s that good and you want one that\'s this good, finding the additional money would be the sensible thing to do.

If you\'re trying to turn a good condition car into a minter you\'ll most likely end up spending more and go hunting high and low for NOS parts.
Title: I don\'t believe it!!!
Post by: syebba on January 07, 2008, 04:53:57 PM
Yep youre probably right!!!
It rained during my test drive, when we got back the vendor immediately starting drying the car!!
If you think about the cost of resprays/engine work/new suspension/trim etc you would spend more than this to get other cars up to this standard.
With the genuine 38000 miles as well,it most probably is worth the money.
I even looked at the back of the rear valence to check for any signs of rust!None.
Not even a scratch or a ding anywhere on body apart from front spoiler.
In fact the more i write this, the more i\'m convincing myself its a good deal...
Hmmm, some of my car stock will have to go!!
I\'ll let you know if i buy it...

One last check before you buy - look over the back wheels to the inside of the back wheel arches, just forward of centre - any rust cracking (starting from inside out) on the link arm reinforcing plates that are facing you?
If there is it\'s a reason to come down to £4000 or below, not necessarily to walk away.
Title: I don\'t believe it!!!
Post by: syebba on January 07, 2008, 06:13:31 PM
I checked the arches,no rust anywhere, not even on the arch flanges where its welded,i will check out the area you mentioned before handing over cash!
Ive made up my mind now, subject to the check youve mentioned i will close the deal at £4750 with years mot & push him for 6 months road tax.
Insurance with adrian flux is £189 a year,£200 excess & agreed value,3000 miles policy,i\'ll probably only do about 1500 miles a year!!
Might have to get someone from this club to value it for insurance purposes, rotechniks told owner to put it on for £5500 ono & expect to get £5000 for it.
Looks like i\'ll join this club & become a full member:Thumbs-up
If final checks are ok my MK1 1979 RX7 from mrbishi will be up for sale & a Dax Cobra 4.2 v8

I see the series 1 is up for sale, so is it a done deal? Check out AoN for agreed value insurance. You need another everyday car with AoN, but ours is on A/Value at £6000. At that value with AoN you may not need a club valuation.
Premium about £220/£240, miles not limited. Tel 08705 708090

Hi David
Its more or less a done deal, just pushing the vendor for 6 months rd tax as well for total price £4750.
I wont do many miles in it so limited mileage policy is fine for me.
I\'m happy with £189 Flux has quoted we\'ll just have to agree value of the car.
Flux want 6 photo\'s of car from every angle & interior & engine bay shots,is this standard practice amongst insurers?
If work takes off abroad i\'ll be lucky to clock up more than a 1000 miles per year!!
I\'ll try & upload piccies when i get it,but i\'m a neandrathal with computers!
CAN YOU ONLY JOIN THIS CLUB WITH PAYPAL?
WHAT ABOUT CREDIT CARDS OR CHEQUES?

It may be worth checking with Lisa for other payment methods but I don\'t think you have to have a Paypal account to pay with your credit card through Paypal. Paypal is usually the cheapest way for clubs and small businesses to accept credit card payments...

Yes, that\'s normal for Flux. It gets a bit wearing though, the umpteemth time you\'ve had to do photos, thats one reason we went to AoN; they were happy because £6000 Agreed didn\'t push into their valuation/photograph threshold.
Someone else on here has been asking about how to get a valuation: if you send a Private Memo to Clive, he will apparently tell you what he wants from you and similarly a PM to Lisa will answer your payment query. I know other methods than PayPal are possible.

If you have AON\'s number to hand, could you post it here,i\'ll give them a call.
Another snag with flux is trying to insure the car for more than you paid for it.
They ask the purchase price & requested insurance value.
If the requested insurance value is higher than purchase price, they want to know how this can be so.
I couldnt push the owner for 6 months tax inc in £4750,but he\'s just got a years mot on the car today,it went through no probs.
I love haggling,he wouldnt put the tax on it,so ive managed to get a full tank of juice instead!!
Should be getting car on saturday.

Thanks for AON recommendation David.
I cant believe how cheap ive got insurance for!!
£157.93 unlimited mileage per year,£100 excess,£40 windscreen excess.
Flux\'s best was £189,with £200 excess on 3000mile policy.
Brilliant!!!!
Picking car up tomorrow,i\'ll try & get photos up if i can work out how to do it!
The cars reg is B554 DJN,i dont know if any of you have seen this car,or its belonged to this club before.

daverey,
Twins!!!
Very nice, how long you had yours?
Looks in good nick from the photo\'s.
@Mark,doing some minor maintenance on the cobra on sunday, before i show it to peeps 4 sale.If its not ****ing down,i\'ll take some photo\'s.
The new RX7 is great, forgotten how well they handle.
I had one of these about 18 years ago,funnily enough red,exactly same model & a B reg!!Makes me feel 22 again.:Tongue1
To get the new RX7 perfect,it needs a few things doing, its easily 95% there.
Theres a hairline crack in one rear lens
Rear ariel elec motor dosent work
struts for hatch are weak, need regassing
Front spoiler, small indent & stone chips
Tiny 5mm tear on drivers side door panel
wheels have surface scratches, could do with refurb
Number plates could do with renewing
That\'s it,all minor jobs compared to building a cobra replica!!!
Rotechniks have done servicing & work on car in past, inc steering idle bushes, new koni front shocks & compression testing.
It hasnt had a clutch fitted yet,how long do these last?
Car also has Thatcham approved immobiliser fitted & i notice both elec window switches have been renewed.
Everything still feels tight on the car, although there is some play in the steering which is normal.Engine pulls well but mostly after 4000rpm,the standard exhaust is fairly raspy as well!
Thats it,i\'ll try & start uploading piccies in the near future.
Cheers stuart...:cheers

FB clutches are bog standard and should last for absolute yonks. Interestingly I had to change our plate at 13000 miles because of the storage - flywheel pitting wore it out. However the 2nd clutch is fine at 49000 and I don\'t expect it to go again in my lifetime because I always double declutch down every gear, a very good habit I learned as a young man with non synchro 1st gears in cars. So depends how driven - I would say 80000 or more is easily possible.
I read once that the transmission on S2 and S3 FB\'s was beefed up because the FB was found to have a lot of power for the drivers of those days. That\'s probably why the gearbox is so much like - out of a lorry?

Rear wing electric aerial is a usual failure. It will cost about £180 from a dealer IF they are available!
They need oiling every couple of months to stop the mast sticking - then the whole thing gives up!
They are great when they\'re working though.
