Title: thinking of going v8...what to do with my engine
Post by: Johnerz on January 04, 2008, 08:16:59 PM
hi guys.  been doing an awful lot of reading on going v8 and looked at alot of conversions, costs, workload, advantages, disadvantages etc.  im only enquiring but what would be better:
trying to sell the engine, etc in 1 piece

or

break it for parts.  its a 97 RS.  standard engine, blitz exhaust/induction/dump valve.  i did have a boost issue that mazda traced to a depression in my fuel tank, so i just drive it with no cap on and voila!

also have the mazdaspeed white faced dials, gtc concept skirts and spoiler that id probably get shot of to help with the conversion costs.

just trying to gauge what would be the best solution so any thoughts appreciated.
cheers
john

Sell the car to someone who\'d appreciate it and buy something else.

sell the car and buy my auto that needs a rebuild, sell off all the bits you dont need-even engines with failed water seals go for up to £400 ish and build yourself the car you want!

actually, yeh,.... i reckon that sounds like a top plan as well. Buy his auto and after selling yours you will have cash left over to do the conversion if you want.  Good luck with what ever you decide.
 cheers, michael.

John your car must be worth itro£8000 easy after selling any bits you dont need off mine you will be left with £7000 burning a hole in ya pocket and if you are doing the work yourself thats gonna cover most if not all the instalation of an ls2 or better engine!

i looked at selling mine and going the auto route, like spartacus did.  but im really happy with the condition of mine and would prefer just to get rid of the mazdaspeed parts, the engine, gearbox etc and work from there.

spartacus, i read yours and tinkers conversion threads and did a lot of research based on info there the car came together really well, how is it running?  if i have any questions (apart from getting info from rx7v8 forums) can i get ideas/help from you via email?

Am I misunderstanding something here? I\'m all for the LS conversions, unlikely of a rotary driver but I see the advantages of a V8 :rollin, BUT are you taking a perfectly fine rotary out of a perfectly fine rex?
It\'s your cash money but it does sound a bit uneconomical...

Mines running fine although it was such a rush moving house and getting the car moving etc I haven’t touched it since just before Xmas. There are a couple of things yet to do like undertray, try and fit another silencer in there some where as its only got one and boy is it loud etc etc.

Once I get back into it I\'ll add to my thread.

You are more than welcome to ask anything you like either here or you can drop me a line on iam-spartacus@hotmail.co.uk  but I don’t check that address too often.

i really didnt think it would be worth that tbh! even though it has some hard to find parts on it.  can i get more info on your auto? pics, condition, is it registered etc, just for info at this stage mate.

ur probably right mate!!! part of my line of thought was reliability.  when rebuild time comes and i may/may not decide to upgrade parts to get more horses. (its only got 43,000 miles on it so rebuild is a fair bit away) id probably need a lot of extra work to get in the same bhp/torque figures that i can with the ls.  and potentially sacrifice engine life.  the v8 generally runs forever and is 400bhp out of the crate.

i know there are so many different variables and opinions on that though and i really dont want to start a big debate on it as its been well discussed and hate to drag up old news, just wanted some thoughts/advice on the engine/parts at this stage.  but i can and do take on board both sides of the fence on this one!!

you could swap my whole car for your engine...its here on ebay

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/1994-MAZDA-RX-7-Spares-Repair-Parts_W0QQitemZ250202340759QQihZ015QQcategoryZ18211QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

thing is it wont include the engine thats in it. Just need to put a good engine in another one...... or if you sell yours i may buy it if its for a good price.

That\'s true, I\'m well up for a v8 conversion but will probably wait till I need a rebuild, you\'ve got about a year left in your rex which isn\'t too bad, and the advantage of doing a v8 conversion with yours now means you can sell a perfectly fine working engine as opposed to a blown engine!

hi john no probs tinker-27taylor@blueyonder.co.uk  i have put a viper diff into my car,it was lots of work but with lots of torque (600+)  550 from 2500 rpm i wanted bigger ratios (not a big problem on lower power motors),a auto diff helps,i make most of the stuff my self. cheers craig

Irrelevent statement.

Something else would not be an RX7. It\'s not the car that\'s an issue. The car is frankly amazing. The engines can suck. END.

Think they are too scared:Giggle

Just to add they can be reliable but it seems a bit hit and miss. My engine was powerfull and never missed a beat, but it was built by JD and I think with all new parts.
