Until last night the car had been fine, not as quick as i expected maybe now i know why.
Went out and after a fairly long motorway run about 30mins. Note was sticking to speed limits and wasn\'t pushing the car atall.
Then got to my destination and stopped at some traffic lights and thought thats a strange sound. Idle went all lumpy now i\'m thinking "o ****" look over to the boost gauge and it wasn\'t staying still was like it was vibraiting also when i went to move didn\'t move out of vaccum smoothly.
So now i\'m thinking the worse and i still had to get home. When i goto restart the car i didn\'t want to go had to keep the key held and give it a little blip. Gently drove it home, i don\'t want to even try and start it, i got a feeling it won\'t start atall now so i\'m not going too.
Anyway my diagnosis is rotor tips have failed, someone please tell me it is something else that is cheaper to fix, i\'ve only had the car 3 weeks.
few things to check before thinking the worse and firstly i will check the plugs, leads etc and also the map sensor check if its connected. Its located on top of the oil filter held on firewall with 10mm bolt also check the vacum hose connected under it.
was the idle erratic or smoothly raising and falling?
Not sure what you mean by erratic. It was staying between 600-800 i would say maybe a little erratic at times but i would deffinatly go smooth for a few seconds than go funny again. But the car sounds really strange a bit like it\'s heavily ported and also vibraited alot more.
also just checked the map sensor thats all connected up correctly.
no sorry i can\'t help i had a problem where the revs would climb and drop between 600-800 smoothly turned out to be plugs.
i\'ll try the plugs anyway i think as thats alot cheaper than a rebuild.
i didnt wanna post this but...... that is a perfect decription of what mine went like when 2 of my tips went(http://www.mazdarotaryclub.com/forums/images/icons/icon9.gif)
hope its not the case for you chief, i had mine a year before it happened.
fluttering boost gge on vacuamn/lumpy idle/vibrating car smoother when revved are all signs of lost compression due busted tips ime afraid
will start ok ish when cold as more compression:2eek
yeh it looks more like it, starts first time cold and a little bit lumpy. worse when it is warm.
Can i ask how many miles car has done, etc.
Thats really unlucky mate, such a shame when this happens to people who have only had their REX for a few weeks/months. Doesnt help the image of RX-7`s being unreliable :(
Did you not get the engine compression tested when you bought it? Was there any paperwork indicating a recent rebuild?
It was a risk buy. Brought at auction and shipped over with no details about it. Milage is around 70000 so the exact kind of milage for it to go. I was just hoping to get a year out of it before it went.
ah right ok, I take it you got it for a very good price though? to compensate the risk? did the auction tell you it had 70k miles with no rebuild? or do the auctions give you no info about history etc of cars?
Your very unlikley to get any history at auction all i had was mileage. But the agent over there is surposed to go over the car so should have run it up to warm ect. Admittedly i wish i didn\'t pay as much as i did but i doesn\'t work out to bad if it\'s not an expensive rebuild if they have to replace housing it may work out to have been a big mistake but atleast i will have a rebuilt engine i can have some confidence in. The worst thing is i do so little driving i don\'t think i could drive the engine in this year.
i had a bouncy idle in mine.. but it turned out to be an air leak. I shat myself when it started doing it, but i dismantled all the air-ducting/intercooler pipework from turbo to plenum and it cured my problem. The revs were going up/down aswell as the boost gauge. i believe if its just your gauge bouncing then ur stuffed and its tipped.. if u get both it could be something quite trivial :)
