Just Thught i would say hi a few peep may know me from driftworks and powerdrift.co.uk , I have just purchased an Fc that was advertised on driftworks with an engine problem , collecting car this week , the guy who owns the car does not know anything about cars at all with his own admission , real nice guy and very honest too :cheers , I tried to start the car but my battery jump pack went flat car seem to turn over nicely but i did notice straight way that the boost pipes going to the intercooler where all loose and there is no jubilee clips holding them on, Iam crossing my fingers hoping thats the problem and the engine is fine ( dont get much luck so hopping )
Just bought some wheels to fit to the car and aint even got it running yet
Heres some pics
Had these work miester S1 sitting round for a while but only had 2 :(
but found some ssr500 that dont look to bad to try and match
what you all think , and dont ask the size as i know there going to struggle to fit but i will get them on with out modding body too much

hummm any chance of a pic from the front - just to see the reg plate :D
Its on a private plate mate , what ya want reg number for :Laugh
Maybe he knows who owned it before :) :)
Mick
nice 180 :)
looks nice, could be all sorts of reasons why it won\'t start though.
Grinder and Brett have been putting a list of all the FCs out there and it may be that this one is already known.
Reg Number of the Car is A20 DFB Hope this helps mate
Would love the rex to look like my 180sx but going to try and keep it looking as closeto standard as poss :D :D
Stu - it\'s not that car!

I got another Graphite one on its way to me aswell got engine problem two hope i can get this one fix up aswell , There to good a car to go the scrappers :D :D think one will be nice road car and the other Mad Track/Drift car
whats the reg of the other one then ?? :D :D
or what is the spec of the other one? If you are thinking about the same "THAT" car I am, I seem to remember it had an interesting interior?
this is very true - bright red with elec seats
the car on this thread though - doesnt sound good from the original add :
Quote1989 rx7 turbo 2 for sale, 109,000 miles, engine needs a rebuild, no tax or mot, i have the log book, and some other history parts with it, body is in good condition, its a gun metal grey colour, interior is very nice as well, if i had the knowledge of being able to rebuild the engine i would. christmas is coming so i think i would prefer the money, not desperate to sell by any means, will be putting pics up tomorrow when its light, if your interested let me know, offers in the region of £550, i think this is more then fair for a car like this, thanks Ben
I can get you a TII engine but ensure of a price yet,its low mileage (60K) and runs perfect. manual S5 version so better turbo. Yours looks like an s5 although a pic of the engine will confirm. This is still in the car and I can send you a vid of it running etc if you wish. I may deliver for the right money if you buy it.
My old one was a 1991 model.... :Giggle

yea didnt sound good , but the guy who i bought it from does not know about cars , said he heard a woosh noise and the car started to run funny so he cut engine and towed it back home and left it there , I looked at the car and all the boost pipes where loose and hanging of with no jubileee clips on them at all , so iam crossing me fingers and hoping its not to bad but prepared if it is :(
The guy was being honest and looking at it worst way saying it needs new engine so he doesnt get any come backs which is fare , but knowing my luck engine will be scrap :D

Would You be kind enough to contact me on 07768724840 about this engine
Thanks
Arrows pointing to boost pipe with missing clips also the intercooler was not bolted down , This guy was driving the car around like that he has not had anyone look at the car he said the previous owner did and the car was still running fine up untill a little while ago

if its dead - then it wouldnt be a WHOOSSSH it would be far more serious
just stick all the pipes back on and see what happens - could be a cheap motor :D
I\'ll phone later tonight but you will need to let me know as i have someone else interested in it. rare to find a good running one that has not got over 100k on it.

Knowing my luck it will be serious , should have it running tmz so will know for sure
Thanks again all :guinness :guinness
well having a IC not bolted down would not cause the not starting. Also the inlet hose would also not be the cause on non starting but if it came off under boost you would lose power and it would cough and smoke a bit. (done it) I wonder if the wooosh is when he booted it and this would then unseat the IC pipes but mine simply blew right off after i forgot to tighten them. Got 2 miles down the road quite happily and as i stuck my foot down off it came. If someone has had the IC off then take it completely off and see what they have been doing. Dont be fooled by someone who claims they know nothing as most of the time they do and know exactly what S*&Te they are selling you. This is their way of trying to get the best price and fooling you into thinking you have a bargain. This was the one that was going for £700 as I was tempted but not with a blown engine. I would only pay half that.
See Ya point , Iam looking at it worst way anyway , if it needs new engine i prepared for that , the boost pipes may of been taken of when original guy looked at the engine , but the guy i bought it from had been using the car and did not remove this clips or the intercooler ,Would love to know how much you want for yours if you would be kind enough to let me know , The car is very tidy apart from engine problem , been after a fc3s for a long time love the look the sound everything about them is cool , Giz a bell when you got 5 please ,
Thanks again for the advice
Nick

The seller has relisted it so somethings up...

if an intercooler pipe has come off the car will not run as the car will suck air through the gap/hole and not through the Air flow meter (AFM) so the ecu wont add any fuel.
On a turbo 2, all the pipes going from the airbox - AFM - Turbo inlet - turbo outlet - i/c- throttle body need to be completely air tight other wise the AFM is not measuring all the air going into the engine and will run lumpy if its a small hole but may also run lean.
FD\'s dont run an AFM and if you use an aftermarket ecu you can bin the afm,

Still not had time to collect car yet , iam of work on thursday got new battery and jubilee clips all ready so will be going to get it then , will let you know more when i got it if it runs or not :( , do want to get another engine though as iam sure its not just the pipes
Thanks again

looks a nice s5 TII - and its a JDM one
Quote from: grinderlooks a nice s5 TII - and its a JDM one
Does look nice to me to be honest , Ben said that it was not as nice as the pics , would like to see it for myself but bit far to travel
Yeah I watched that auction to see what it went for. Thought it looked quite clean but pics can lie and so can sellers unfortunately.
Collected the car today , fitted new battery and reconnected the intercooler pipes , wouldnt start at 1st then gave it a tow and she then started , lots of smoke from the rear then cleared after a while , engine sounded ok , but there was no power there at all , dropped it of to me mate and he is fitted new plugs ect try that 1st and see how we go , find out more tmz , lots of history and old mot\'s and tax disc with car but no sign of engine rebuild ect , think i will take the plunge and buy another engine and may be get the one in it rebuilt ported ect ect
Hi nick, well if you are going to spend some money on a rebuild then you dont want to spend much on an engine. perhaps the non rebuilt one will tide you over until you have an engine rebuilt. Its exactly the plan i am going to do as well but i shall keep the rebuilt one of mine so i can accomplish this. The car I had that smoked is more than the turbo so its a strip down on that one.
You can have the engine for £300, it will go on ebay next week so you have
1st dibs.
hay Nick, did you do anymore to the car
yeah i was thinking that aswell !
becareful of what plugs you put in - you cant throw any old plugs into it
another bump as well as might need to shift the engine within the next few weeks. let me know if you still want it. I shall delay ebay until you are sorted out though Nick.
Quote from: grinderyeah i was thinking that aswell !

Thanks again all , i Bought some NGK BUR 9EQP was told to try and get two 7eqp to fit in the top bank but suppliers did not list them , plugs will be fitted today and see how we go from there , car is on the button now and does not smoke at all but still running a little rough ,
Peter did you get a chance to check the engine over as per tel conversation , Thanks
engine seems alright and plenty of compression from the plug holes so it can just wait until you are sorted. Also just put 9\'s in all round. Double check the vaccuum hoses and any electrical connection. If you want any spares to try for the engine then let me know and you can always borrow then to try
ie ECU, HT leads, coils etc.
Fitted new plugs car runs better when cold but gets rough when warmed up , driving the car there is no power does not pull at all , exhaust sounds like its blocked , engine does sound ok though so not sure think i need to get compression checked , can this be done with normal compression tester for conventional engines also checking around for leaks in pipes ect
yeah you can check it with a normal comp tested ( not as good as a mazda one though )
hold the release valve in when you do the test and you should see 3 even bounces
you need to do this with a warm car though - so becareful
there are some procedures somewhere for it
Hi Nick, hows the car going, any better yet ?
The engine is still good, just waiting on your command.
allrite lad, how did you get on with your comp test then?
Right , have done compression test on the car and its showing just under 5.5bar on both rotors , i think the car should still drive ok like that but doesnt seem to pull at all which leads me to think there maybe turbo problem or a air leak from somewhere , I think i may just get the car taken to rotechniks and get them to investigate the problem and go from there , anymore ideas :(
Must say a big thanks to Peter for all his help :Thumbsup!
humm 5.5bar is about 77psi - they reckon 81 psi and lower is BAD - you want to be around the 100 mark .. sorry about being the barer of bad news
^ you mostly always are young man ;)
Quote from: grinderhumm 5.5bar is about 77psi - they reckon 81 psi and lower is BAD - you want to be around the 100 mark .. sorry about being the barer of bad news
Yep thought so , only thing is compression tester was piston engine types , so little worried that may be very wrong not to sure , think iam best taking it to someone who knows what there doing , Ive bought new wheels , exhaust sytem , mirrors and more and the car aint even running yet , I must be mad LOL :D at least i can just look at it :driving
was the engine warm when you did the test, ?
Also if I remember somewhere that you add something like 20% on your figures if using a standard comp tester. if 5.5 is what you got then it could be as much as 6.6 Still not brillient though. if the miles are low then you have nothing to lose by putting some cleaner in the plug holes, some have used all sorts, plenty of threads on here. it might just be a lazy apex seal spring but the comp test should have picked it up. You are watching the bounces of the needle, all 3 bounces should be around the same.
It could just be a tired engine. also make sure that it is warm as Antnikuk said and make sure that your oil is topped to full on dip stick.
I\'m all set for Sunday, just need your word and a location,i\'ll have a look on the map and see a suitable place.
Just spoke the guy doing it and car was cold does that make the readings worse , pete will txt you tmz to sort out place to meet , now how do i get 9.5x17 et13 fit ouch
Think im right in saying that it needs to be warm so that the rotor housings and rest of the engine has expanded to give the engine its greatest clearances. This gives a lower compression reading than when an engine is cold. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but if its reading 5.5 when cold it will be less when warm. Feel free to flame me if im wrong guys!
is that not the other way around? when cold things contract and therefore larger clearances. when hot things expand and you get tighter clearances. some metals expand or have a better thermal expansion than other and they can use this to good affect.
I would have said to get it hot so that the expansion has occured and a better compression should be had.
On a side note an exhaust can \'grow\' an inch when its at full blast.
but i could be shot down in flames as well if i\'m wrong.
It could be either way im not sure. I just know it has to be warm to do the test! Hopefully someone will clarify this for us.
If when warm the rotor expands more than the housing it would result in there being less volume in the chamber = higher compression
If when warm the rotor housing expands more than the rotor then there is a higher volume in the chamber = lower compression.
Im just thinking out loud and hopeing that someone else will tell us the correct explination.
Hallo,
You will get a lower reading on a cold engine.
Thanks,
JH
What he said, all the seals expand making a better seal against the housings, thats why you tollerance the seals when building to allow for heat expansion
9.5 isnt a problem but ET13 is.
So does ET13 mean that you\'d need to machine the back of the wheel off (!)? or put spacers on? Can never remember..
Anyway Doc make sure you hold the valve in on the compression tester so that you can see each apex seal as it \'swooshes\' past, this will give you an idea of whether its just one apex seal thats going/gone/stuck/whatever or whether they are all equally worn.
Also what are other peoples compression readings from cold? having the figures from a known good engine would be a good reference?
Ah I see. So its mainly down to the tips expanding rather than the housing etc. So whats this 9.5 and ET13 your going on about?
Quote from: Nick The DoctorJust spoke the guy doing it and car was cold does that make the readings worse , pete will txt you tmz to sort out place to meet , now how do i get 9.5x17 et13 fit ouch
Wheel size fitment.. ET(offset), apparently the recommended for fc3s is about ET35-40?
standard is 40 with a 7J. See Furbs thread on his project car as that has 25\'s but on 8j rim or something like that.
How come an engine is harder to start from hot rather than cold on a low compression/worn out engine? I thought the higher compression would help? :2Confused
Quote from: BenLewisMavSo does ET13 mean that you\'d need to machine the back of the wheel off (!)? or put spacers on? Can never remember..
Answer to that question if i was to Fit 10mm Spacer on these wheels it would then make them Et3 , you can get the inner face of the wheel hub machined of to make the offset higher but you would loose strengh so not advised ,
So me think arch rolling is the only way
Would like to know about this compression for sure because if the reading is Higher when warm and we also used incorrect Compression tester , the readings could be higher than what we achieved , i want to know for sure as iam worried there could be another problem ie turbo ect , think it best i get the car to specialist to make sure , will book it in with rotechniks next week me things , just want to make sure before i swap engine over and end up with same problem
Pete will call you in a bit trying to sort some time off
No probs chap the engine is in the back of the car ready.
Even your low readings are very low, i\'ve had people have 6-7\'s on a cold engine but as you say a lot of hard work to find you have the same problem.
I would have thought that if it was the turbo then you would have shaft play or certainly hear something amiss. A leaking hose on these TII cars would give you problems starting for sure so at this stage I doubt its that. I have known ECU\'s cause something similar if its lost its fuel curve somehow.
Nick nice to meet you even if it was by the side of the road, I will try a few pallet companies that might give me a good price to get it down to you. It still might be cheaper in the long run as it will be a 300 mile round trip. Only took me 2 hours to get to dartford so rweckon about 3 hours or less to get to yours. I would have taken it to your house, I will see what else is on the calender and we\'ll come up with something.
Nice toMeet you to pete , thanks again for your time , atleast i know i have an engine now, just need to make sure its that may just buy new turbo and fit engine supplied by you and check pipe work and crossfingers alls ok
might be best bto get it diagnosed correctly before spending money on a new turbo. It will \\be worth the money in the long run. if its got a lack of power and thats it then it does not have to be the turbo or engine all the time. generally with the rotary it is but it can only be a few other things, check that the throttle is opening correctly if you have not already.
Update well not much, drove the car today for 12 odd miles , oil pressure great , water temp great , just doesnt pull at all sounds like exhaust is blocked makes me think turbo problem , exhaust is wrecked so thats coming of asap
Hi, we will still need to sort this engine out between us fairly soon. I can get it delivered for you if you want, its still in the back of the van.
if you suspect the turbo then try to see what shaft play there is,it might give you some indication.
can i have your email address as its easier to talk.
mine is pdtaylor18@hotmail.com
Pete Just sent you email
Nice one mate ;)
Had a good look under the car and the exhaust system is rotten , rear box on n.s is just hanging on bracket not connected to system , Cat looks rotten from the outside so iam wondering if that is broken up inside and blocked , will get it removed asap and see , car feels nice and tite though :chat
