How difficult is this?
Anyone here done it in the car?
At the moment I the radiator is out, so Airbox and all that is off,and I have to replace the clutch, so Exhaust has to come off anyway, plus gearbox out might give me a little more room.
Ive got the FSM, but its for Left Hand drive. Looks like the steering shaft is in the way on our cars. Do I need to remove/disconnect this?
Thanks

OK
I had a chat with Geff, and as I suspected, he recommends removing the steering shaft.
Gives much more room in there, especially to remove the heat shields.
He also recommends that I replace the inlet manifold gasket (* despair*) while the Turbo pack is out.
This probably just as well, as I have leaking injectors, and if the manifold is off, I can get to them.
So, all at the the same time, I\'m:
replacing clutch (box nearly out)
replacing Twin Turbo pack
replacing inlet manifold gasket
replacing Injector seals
Just to top it all, my radiator is out being repaired.
Im away for the whole of April, so I need to finish before then, else I\'ll NEVER remember where everything goes!!
Yep, need that good luck, Brian!!!
Ok, Brian thanks for that link. I printed it out, and I followed it, and its quite good. Will use it as a check list to re-assemble.
Ive removed the Turbos, and the inlet manifold, too. I have been smelling fuel, and what did I find, an injector seal lying on the manifold! This must be from me replacing Oil injectors. I had to remove the fuel injectors and obviously re fitted them incorrectly.
Now I am stuck, as I am waiting for parts from Geff.
So far, have only lost one blot, and broken only 1 wire! A record for me!
Will keep you updated.:p

Clive.
The link that Brian sent me calls for 1 and 1/2 days which I think is fairly accurate, say 12 hours.
Hope its that quick to put back together!!!
Hi Martin,
were all the studs ok when taking them out ??
What you doing putting upgraded stock twins ?? or are you replacing seals in the turbo housing ??
Sorry for all the question, it\'s just hat it\'s not everyday you meet or talk to someone who is as brave as you tackling your turbos on your own. I did mechanics for 7 years before I switched career into I.T. but I specialised most of the time with clutches and gearboxes. Yet now I hardly touch my car, it just seems so much easier to take it to a garage, aka (laziness)
Good luck mate keep us informed.

I have never had 11PSI on the secondary since I bought the car a year ago( max 8 ) I have replaced all the vacuum hoses, tested every solenoid and actuator, and eventually took it to Geff. After some testing he diagnosed a poor Secondary turbo. So I\'m replacing the pack. Im not into modding much, I just want it to perform as Mazda intended!
Luckily, no studs broke, though some of them screwed out rather than the nut coming off.
(Glad you got your tyre sorted)
Im in I.T. so mechanics is my hobby. (dont enjoy working on other people\'s cars, though)

Just a thought Martin!
I had the very same symptom regarding the Second Turbo and low Boost, even after looking at every obvious cause, exempt the High Flow Cat!
Do you have a cat? Have you had an Air Pump problem?

Hi Jus ,
lf it\'s any help l am going single turbo on my U/K right now so it means that l have a perfect turbo pack for sale that boosted properly, they have done 47000 and been running with stock ECU , so no mad boost going through them £300 and they are yours.
All the Best Clive@mazdarotaryclub.com
Thanks Jus!
My Cat had been making a rattling noise on idle. And at night I could see stuff coming out the exhaust under boost.
Geff took it off, and, yes, it was falling to bits. So we put on Martin Sintler\'s old mid-pipe. It was a bit better, but still 8, sometimes 9 PSi :-(
I just hope to goodness its fixed when I\'ve put it all back! It can only be the ECu then, but Geff did do a few tests on the ECU.
Hope to get my parts tomorrow/Friday, then its jigsaw time again!

Thanks Clive, however I was replying to martin\'s post, ;-)
I forgot to bold Martin\'s quote! Nothing like cross wires! LOL
But thank you anyway, very good price fortunately, I\'m soon loosing the Twins too :-)
Thanks

Yes sounds like a dodgy second turbo! Just out of interest, have you been getting a cloud of oil out of the rear on start up say, after the car has been stood for a few hours?

Next mod\'s to include;
1: TO4E (Courtesy of Chris) however, I may go for something bigger maybe S or R! So Chris do you have anything else in you Aladdin’s cave? ;-). I personally don\'t fancy a RB turbo, yet!
2: 1300\'cc Secondary\'s
Hopefully completed for the 21st April TOTB qualifying run at York Drag Strip, RWYB day! It\'s on a Bank Holiday Monday as well! So anyone going? If so, come over and say hello!!
Nothing too radical but makes for a decent road/track set-up!
It\'s Chris with his motor that I can’t wait to see, mmmm! But I\'ll enjoy being the bully for a bit longer, hey Chris?

Right, I collected my new clutch plate from Geff this morning.
So far I have refitted the new turbo pack, Radiator (which was leaking), and air pump.
I have left the plenum off for now, so I can easily access the top gearbox bolts.
So, there\'s hope that Ill be going by or on the weekend!!!
Clive, I took my old turbos to Geff. He removed the secondary from the pack, and at first it looked fine, no damage to the blades. Then he noticed that the colouring around the turbo housing, and on the blades was not uniform. There was some blow by as well. Half the blades where black, the other half light brown??? There is a sleeve that tightly fits around the blade, and that seems to have been badly fitted.
So, we think that the sleeve allowed the blow by, and therefore not much force on the secondary turbo from the exhaust, and the shaft was sticking, too. (Only explaination for half/half colours).
Heres holding thumbs that I\'ll have 11 PSI when I get here going again.
Hi Martin,
It was good to finally meet you on saturday. Well it sounds like you are making real good progress on the fd. Question: did you notice any smoke under hard acceleration when you had this secondary boost problem ??

Brian
It was good to meet you, too. There wasnt smoke as such. At night, if I looked closely, and if there was a car behind me, I could just see some stuff coming out. I think this was from the Cat, though.
Got the new clutch in, and gearbox on. Tonight I refit the Plenum, Intercooler, Steering shaft. ( I hope)
Hopefully, I can try and start it up tomorrow night!
Good on ya mate,
Didn\'t take that long either. I\'m gonna get my fingers dirty next month too, I\'m gonna fit a new intercooler, not quite as extensive maintainance as yourself, but considering I can be just about bothered to change my brakes, it\'s a big job for me.
Hope it goes well and you have your 2ndary boost back.

Brian/Guys
Ok, made good progress last night. Got the exhaust back on, and bled the clutch. Then I knocked the brake fluid bottle over the engine!!1 Arggh!
After cleaning that up, started refitting the steering shaft, and I could not get one of the bolts to bite, and I may have stripped it :-((
Thats when I gave up last night!
So, hope I can sort that tonight. Then its replace the plenum, and see if it starts!
MartinY
Ok, see you all on Tuesday night!
She\'s going again. No more fuel smell, no more water leak, no more slipping clutch.
Only trouble is... still only 8 PSI on secondary. I think Im gonna give up and take it to Geff :-(
Good stuff Martin, that must be frustrating :reallymad for the boost to still only be 8psi :(
Did you take it around the block with the exhaust off? would be a good test!
I can\'t make it on Tuesday night :( busy at the moment with family over from Oz etc.
Sorry to hear Martin but don\'t dispair, the original link I gave you for dismantling and re-assembly of the turbos is in my opinion the best info I have found for trouble-shooting these kind of problems on a rx-7. I don\'t know what you have checked already but have a look at the below link and go to troubleshooting & symptoms and have a good read I am sure it will help.

Thanks Guys
Brian, thanks, I have all that stuff! I dont know wether to start again with my diagnostics, or just take it to Geff for a day, or just cough up and take it to Rotechniks. Maybe I\'ll leave it till May, Im away the whole of April. But I really wanted to do the track session on 17th May, and was hoping it wuld be sorted by then.
I think there is a way of running non sequential. Maybe that would give some more clues. So i might try that, too.
This is only on the second turbo?? I take it that means you get 10-8-8 ??
Does this make any difference whether car is hot or cold ??
or do you get 10-8-10 then it tails off to 8psi in high rev range ??
rgds
Brian
Hi Brian
Its a 11-8-8.
Therefore i dont suspect a leak anywhere.
Next im going to replace the ecu, then I going to run it nonsequential, for diagnostics.
I\'m still trying to dig up some info for you, bear with me

Brian
Hallo,
Reading this thread with interest. Did my inlet manifold gaskets a while ago, so had to remove all the turbos and associated bits and pieces.
Seems it went well.
I see your comments on the boost pattern, is the classically quoted 10-8-10. I have just fitted a boost guage and can now also see I get a 10-8-8.
If this thread is still active, is there REALLY going to be that much of a difference with 2 psi? Is it a lot of effort/money for a tiny/or non-noticable improvement??
Hope you do get yours sorted, and let us know how much better it is!
Cheers
Ok, but I am afraid I am away for the next 5 weeks, Aus and South Africa.
So, its on hold until I get back.
I am pretty sure it will be a remarkable difference. Plus, I wanted to do the track day on 17 May, but I am loathe to put her on the track, knowing she\'s not "right". I am pretty determined to fix it!:)
mmmm? You got me thinking now leaving a rx7 for a long time without starting I have heard that we can get carbon lock. As a means to prevent this would it be an idea say going away for 2 month or so to remove the spark plugs and pour some oil into the chambers, put the spark plugs back and then leave it. Presuming that there is no where for the oil to go would this then prevent the dread carbon lock issue ??
rgds
Brian
Hi Brian,
Carbon Lock generally isn\'t created by a car sitting around, it is more that if the car has been running for short periods of time, and only idling.
An example is, that my brother leaves his Cosmo and Rotary Wagon (in Oz) around for months without running them at all - and they are still ok.
It would be more if you run it for a few mins. then turn it off a number of times.
Cheers Glen,
I must stop doing that then.
