Title: Idle problem?
Post by: wizard on February 23, 2004, 02:30:22 PM
Hi, I have a 93 Fd, all running fine, till the weekend, drove it a couple of miles to work, by this time the choke had come off, the idle was going up and down, not trying to stall, ranging from 900rpm up to 1800rpm, just reving itself up and down? Anyone have any idea why? don\'t want to drive it while its doing it! could it be the idle control valve?
also recently i have noticed the heat light on the dash flashing? used to stop when i put my foot down, now it flashes when i rev it after this idle problem?
cheers
Neil

Hi mate,

I\'m no expert, in fact i\'m a bit of a rotary rookie, but i had the same problem with my 95 FD a couple of months ago.  I was just driving along minding my own, when i pulled up at a set of traffic lights and my car was reving of its own accord between about 1000revs to 1800revs.  Its was worse if i put my lights on.  Unfortunately mine turned out to be the paper inlet manifold gasket that had gone (a common problem i understand). Which wasnt cheap!

Obviously that was worst case scenario.  I\'d check to see if any of your hoses have come off or split etc.  With any luck it\'ll be something simple like that.

As i said i\'m no expert but thats what was wrong with mine.

Hope thats some sort of a help mate.

Nick

Do you have a Apexi Power FC by any chance ?

no just the standard ecu! suppose the gasket problem may explain why the heat light is flashing?

My 2p

Sounds like a blown Inlet manfold gasket to me, certainly with the power fc this causes the rise and falling of revs as the ecu "hunts" for an idle point

Quite common as the std gaskets are only paper and crack etc over time, get it replaced with a metal one, (and get both fone at the same time as its a lot of labour to remove both turbos just to have the same happen again)

Take it to a specialist

The problem i have is that the nearest place (reading or portsmouth) r at least 1 hour drive away! reading back on previous posts the flashing heat light could be detonation and taking it down the motorway might not be a good idea! heard it is a hard job to do the inlet manifold gasket, do u need to get underneath it to do so?

I am in no way qualified to give you technical advice, but for a professional replacing the inlet manifold gasket (assuming thats even the problem) it takes about 6 hours or so to remove both turbos etc, when I had it done

On a Std ECU I think the heat light means the CAT is hot or something, I think its only on the Apexi ecu that it means detonation, best ring roteknics or reworx and ask them, they will know immediately and can advise you what to do next

I took mine up to rotechnics on a trailer because i didnt know what the problem was or whether i was gonna do any damage by driving it up the motorway.

They diagnosed mine as inlet manifold gasket and i think they charged me for about 6-7 hours labour in doing the job.

I\'d give them or a garage of your choice a ring and see what they say.  It might be something else.
