Title: Would I be OK doing this??
Post by: Jono FD3 on December 26, 2007, 05:48:29 PM
Pressure washing the engine bay & block??

Had a slight oil leak the other day, which has resulted in 90% of my engine being plasterd in oil!! I did this the other day with my hilux and the difference was amaising (I could actualy see metal instead of gunge!!) If it\'s OK to do this, what precautions should I take & should I keep the engine running or knock it off while doing this??

Cheers for your help guys

Make sure the engine it hot when you do it, and stay away from the alternator. Take it for a blast after to dry it off. ;)

yes you can, avoid electrics as much as possible and air intake. There\'s always a risk tho when doing this. The are also issues with doing it will the engine warm as the rapid cooling can cause warping and cracking of hot metal parts. Theres products you can spray on first that get rid of the oil. Idealy you can use a steamer.

I never steam clean or pressure wash petrol engines, after a number of incidents involving customers cars,no matter how you mask off the electrics,a high pressure washer will always find a way to get water where you dont want it.If you can get rag to the area do it by hand, takes longer, but no longer than taking the plugs out:Thumbs-up

always keep the engine running whilst steaming it  if any gets in the altenator it gets dispursed quickly bud appart from that its an echo stay away from as many elctrical buts as poss use low pressure hot steam best way.if you have the chance we use to dewax cars using a parrafin mix in the water increases the temp without lifting paint hope that helps

I clean mine regularly. As others have said, warm up the engine,(I keep it running)  it helps dry everything afterwards. Dont spray directly onto electrical connections. Dont use too much pressure, use a degreaser first, like Gunk, and then use hot pressure washer from a distance to rinse off.

OK.... I was just going to use the tesco washer at my local sation!!
No big drama as I\'m going to be changing the engine next year some point!! so I could just leave it as is, & give it a good blasing befor I pull it out, that way I will be undoing all the connectors to hook up the new engine so I can WD40 them before I put the back together!!

if it was me i would find out where the oil coming from to start with and then fix it then give it a clean staying away from electrical points maybe use some tfr or gunk leave for i while then wash off but dont go to close maybe use a small paint brush to get into tight places, leave it running your see if it starts to drop on idle
