OK everyone, I know I\'m in a bad position here, but some help please.
I\'m trying to insure my RX7, which is on its way. I\'m 26 and need to surrender my NZ drivers licence (had for 10 years) for a UK one.
So, all I want is 3rd party insurance. Not worried about the rest, as in two years I\'m going back to live in Australia.
Its so difficult to get insurance here in the UK, and i\'ve never had a speeding ticket, or made a claim!!
Am calling all of the insurance agencies (AON won\'t touch me) has anyone else been in my position, and know of a company that might insure me?
Help please!!!
I feel your pain, it was an absolute pain in the backside for me to get reasonably priced insurance on anything remotely quick a few years ago after I had to swap my German license for a UK one. For some reason companies classed me as a new driver despite the back of my license showing that I passed my test back in \'86.
One tip, it may be worth trying to get TPFT instead as a lot of companies do seem to be wary of insuring higher-value cars TPO.
I had to go to some high-street broker when I came over here initially as all the other companies wouldn\'t even bother quoting me.
Thanks elford_tim, yeah, I just want third party, even without the theft (they can prise the car from my cold dead hands!!:Grrr ) Its so hard, no claims, no convictions, no speeding tickets, and no insurance.
So tell me more about high street brokers? I assume I just google insurance brokers?
I\'ll wait till the car is registered, i\'ve surrendered my NZ licence, and the car is here!!
just bend the truth slightly, they wont check
@Rotaryguru, have a wander down your local high street or have a look in the Yellow pages :).
Regarding TPO vs TPFT, a lot of insurance companies appear to be working on the assumption that someone who\'s only willing to pay for TPO represents a higher risk as they "don\'t care about the car" or somesuch nonsense. Hence the suggestion to go TPFT. Also, you\'ll have to get the car insured so you can drive it to the MOT station, otherwise you can\'t register it. Nevertheless if it\'s an FD you\'ll have a lot of problems insuring it, especially if it\'s modified. It took me about 8 years to get to the point where I can insure almost anything for a fairly reasonable cost.
@DC-Typer - I wouldn\'t say that this is good advice, if something happens (like the granny around the corner driving into Rotaryguru\'s car) and they do check, he\'d be SOOL.
try livingstones warmen

Ok, I need to get an alarm anyway, so will go for TPFT. I\'ll drive it to the MOT station, its not far!!! :Thumbs-up

Thanks for all the help guys!! Keep it coming!!! I just need a insurance company to listen to the situation, I am a good person to cover!!!:cool
I have had TPO on my FD with this lot http://www.budgetinsurance.com/car_searchpanel.asp?SRC=B131&WT.srch=1&gclid=CKj21J-QtJACFQFZQgodlQYKLQ
I think the value of your car must be under £5k to be ellegible for TPO, you only need to declare this to them, (but be mindful of the possible implications when doing this), ridiculous eh.. ask for legal fees to be removed, offer a limited mileage and if you do not use the car for commuting, make sure you get insurance domestic and pleasure only.
insurance...:Grrr :Grrr I am starting to get hot under the collar..

Yes, definately only a weekend car, and will ask for limited mileage. I live in the middle of London and walk to work, so no commuting, I think the congestion charge and parking would eat my bank account!!
Oh, and say that you are a Civil Servant, one of the lowest risk occupations apparently (but again, be mindful of the possible implications when doing this)

Never, ever bend the truth with Insurance Companies. The checking comes after an accident, not before. The slightest inaccuracy in your statements means they\'ll walk away from you, leaving you possibly with a civil action and a claim against all your assets from the 3rd party.
Try Admiral Insurance (Yellow Pages). A good long time ago they helped me with an unusual insurance risk. (A car without a quoted book value due to extended storage new). They may not be the same people now of course.
In general, if the sales people seem unhelpful anywhere, ask to speak to the Underwriters directly.
It\'s worth calling A-Plan (based in Newbury). Their \'special vehicles\' unti is used to dealing with imported cars and drivers with "odd" circumstances. You will at least be able to discuss it with someone who is helpful and knowledgable rather than go through a set of standard forms and have \'computer sayas no\' as an outcome!

Both pieces of very good advice. I\'ve found the call centre people very unhelpful, so I will speak to the underwriters. And I would never lie on the details, they always check, and I always read the fine print which normally says something like \'we will leave you high and dry, if we find one thing out of order with your claim\'

Thanks mate, I will. After trying seven companies who didn\'t want to quote me, I will wait until it arrives. Get all registered etc, and then get onto the insurance quotes. I will keep all posted! and also have a read of my other posts to keep up to date with how its all going!!:chat

Good. Any decent insurer will insure a car on a chassis number for a certain amount of time (usually two-three weeks) so you can get down to the MOT station and do all the other fun associated with registering a fresh import.
I assume that the car is over ten years old and as such doesn\'t require an SVA/ESVA?

Correctamundo!! :cool 1992 Type X. Will try to get photos reposted.

That\'ll work provided you don\'t have to claim if you de be prepared for the insurance company to declare the policy void, then you have the police on your back for driving an uninsured car.

Its not even the police that worry me with this.
What if you crash into a Porsche? Cause a pile-up? Or injure someone?
You\'ll be paying for the rest of your life maybe.
trade insurance matey! they insure the person not the car. all you need is "premisis" just use your home address and call it guru motors. my mate does it. he;s insured 3 skylines and an m3 for £800 :)
Cashpoint: not that i am suggesting anyone does anything illigal, but through experiance of dealing with motor insurance claims for the last 5 years. its highly unlikely they would go in to too much detail when investigating. they admin costs are too high...
I got a quote from a company called greenlight £650 all mods declared, then when I went to sing up with them I told them that the cc of the car according to the V5 reg form was 2600cc and it was a manual and they wouldn\'t insure me. So had to look around and next cheapest was direct line with no mods and a tracker needed to be fitted £1300 + £400 for the tracker then tried a local firm £1350 with body mods only no tracker required, well I\'m half way there.
Hey RotaryGuru, which company did you end up using? I\'m almost in the same situation (foreigner / below 30 / NW8 is my postcode) and as it\'s my first car in the UK (1989 FC3S turbo) i don\'t have any insurance history so the quotes I get are really silly.
I will pick up the car Saturday btw, maybe we can meet up some time later this month once your car is road legal in the UK.

Hey Mate, Not insured yet, car needs registration plates. I got my insurers in NZ on the phone, and got a printout of every car I ever insured and the dates, so thats a bonus, would recommend doing this. Quotes have been good so far, only called 3, and they are within what I want to pay.
Hyperformance were good. Try them! Will post the outcome once I get insured, hopefully in the next 3 weeks. :D
I know it\'s a slightly different situation, but when I was dispatch riding in London some companies would insure me if I offered to pay the premium up front in cash, but not otherwise! They obviously figured me as such a high risk organ donor that I wouldn\'t be around long enough to pay by instalment or anything.
It\'s also worth offering them titbits that may not matter to you, but will to them, like for example I could get cover a lot easier if I swore not to carry pillion passengers, even in private use. They pay far more if you mash up the car with passengers in it than if its just yourself (not that I\'m implying you\'re likely to mash it up, God forbid, but that\'s how they see it). You could maybe get leeway out of them by offering no passengers/limited mileage clauses and the like?

Thanks Nik da Greek, yeah, we said limited milage, and even asked if we could voluntarily increase the excess. I will more tahn 90% of teh time carry a passenger, my girlfirend, so we will try the pay up front option too.
Used Bell if it can help, cheapest among the ones that accepted to insure me (not so much people out there for me...). Will pick up the car tomorrow, I\'ll post some pics soon.
So far, my best quote is £1,200 full comp. £600 excess. Any thoughts? Good/Bad?
Quote from: RotaryguruSo far, my best quote is £1,200 full comp. £600 excess. Any thoughts? Good/Bad?
That\'s twice what I\'m paying, and twice the excess, and I managed to reduce my no-claims to a single year by wrapping the car up last year. Seems quite steep, but I guess you are in a fairly unique position. Do you have any no claims from anywhere else they\'d honour? I could have transferred mine off the bike to the car, but that would obviously have left me with none on my bike policy. Dunno if they\'d honour it from NZ, suppose that may be a problem, can\'t remember if anyone asked that before.
Only thing left is to move somewhere unbelievably low risk or get the most responsible job in the world. Any chance of convincing them you\'re, like, a nun or something? :Giggle
