Was driving up to Northumberland from Hull on Friday night for my works xmas night party. Had my best mate in the car with me (fooking gorgeous she is :) ). Anyhoo, just got on to the M62 (middle lane, about 80mph) and suddenly BANG!!!
Knew what had happened straight away, dropped her into neutral and let her coast onto the hard shoulder. Got out to have a looksee, nearside rear completely destroyed, the only rubber left attached was a thin band round both inner and outer rims. Fortunately the traffic was light, guy in a merc on the inside lane shat it though - think he was more scared than I was as he seen it explode!!
Overall, no major damage, need a new front strut brace \'cos that got rubber ducked when she got pulled onto the back of the recovery truck (no other way of attaching cable), and I don\'t even wanna think about the state of the underside of the front bumper! I couldn\'t watch as she got hauled up the ramp :(
have to be pragmatic though, it could\'ve been a LOT worse, both me and Lou were fine, the rest is just material damage which can be fixed.
got a cracking pic of the trashed tyre on me moby which i\'ll put up when I get home.
blow outs are rubbish!!! not a nice feeling at all, even worse though when they turn up to collect you with the wrong kind of low loader. When you speak to them on the phone its doesn\'t matter how much you say "ITS REALLY LOW" they still seem to send out something that can get it out without damaging it!
Glad to hear that nothing worse came of it.
T got a spare strut brace at home you can have its an original one, glad both ok
The worse thing was the signs were all there!!!
Felt a bit of a wobble from the arse earlier in the day, but it went away. Came back later on the same bit of road so assumed it was just the surface.
had a quick look at the tyres before I left and couldn\'t see anything wrong.
just before the blow, it was like the wind was pushing her off course, with hindsight it was obviously the tread starting to disintegrate...telling you - you haven\'t lived until you\'ve been up the motorway sideyways!!
i know, the loader bit was horrific, I had to walk away down the hard shoulder - couldn\'t bear to watch it!
- Pete, that would be ace, it was an original that got ruined. How much you want for it??
T freebie pic below
Thats the one Pete mate, i don\'t think it s done any damage to the turrets, just the brace has been chewed through!
I shall happily take that of your hands! :Thumbs-up i\'ll give you a call over the next few days...quite busy with work at the mo\'.
I have to give you something for it, even if it\'s just a cheeky wee bottle of something! whats your weapon of choice?
There are towing points under the car, FYI.

T buy me a pint sometime call that evens
Pete, you are a top man :)
wait \'til you see the pic - u\'ll love it!
Tyre pressures - fortnightly check and always before a long fast trip. The car was telling you earlier, "check me tyre pressures please".
Doctor\'s recommendation if you keep shxxing yourself at the wheel A good pressure gauge and footpump for Christmas.
Sorry if it sounds patronising, but I\'ve a real fear of blowouts. Tyre area on the road is tiny and we all do 80 on them.
- David, no offence taken mate. I do check the pressure regularly - but will be doing once a week from now on. Would really like to never have that experience again!
Don\'t worry, it\'s a hard lesson well learned. Got off VERY lightly i reckon :O

Cheers mate, just done our 2 cars this morning before logging on because it\'s a week or so and the temperature\'s dropped sharply. the FB is a bit leaky on a couple of its tyres but I compensate by checking and pumping up weekly on that car. Glad you don\'t mind old geezer trying to play the expert.
I may of missed something, but wouldnt it of been easier to jack it up and put the spare on than all the hassle of getting it on a tow wagon?
- David, not at all, sometimes it takes the older ones to keep us young \'uns in check! And i\'m not about to start giving anyone grief for offering constructive advice! :D
- Kevin, would have been a much better idea, but flawed on three counts, the space saver that is in the car won\'t fit with the wheel size I have (would ruin diff), don\'t have a jack in car, and even if I did, the cars too low to get one under! lol lol

Ahhh, abit stuck then. The scissor jack that comes with the car would be low enough to get under your car, believe me!!...
Then just swap your spare with one of the front wheel and put your front alloy on the rear if your worried about the diff, job done! :burnout

T
i can get the scissor jacks under mine ok ,
from memory i am pretty sure the space saver wheel will
only fit on the front ?
but i dont actually have the jack! lol, think that should be on my xmas list!
I should hope so, don\'t wanna think about the wheelspins trying to put the power down thru that tiny wee wheel!

Have a look on youtube for space saver drifting, it supprising how much abuse they can take. Lol.
edit: Damn, it was here but seems to no longer exist!

Yep, same thing happened to me on the way back from rotorstock2 on the same side too! http://www.mazdarotaryclub.com/forums/showthread.php?t=15339&highlight=happened
unlucky!!!! glad you and your mates alright tho, you hear some real horror stories about blow outs.
I dont own a space saver!! maybe it would be a good idea if i got one!!
Rubber ducked strutbrace:
T keep the 2 fasteners that go onto the struts as i used my originals to fit new blingy strut brace with, original comes with the new ones but they fasten a diferent way round but may be ok on yours didnt work on mine.
Better a shot brace than bodywork damaged.
I am away saturday probably around lunchtime not back until late sunday as its the MRC xmas booze up (ooooops dinner) depending when you want the brace
will do Pete mate, will you be around on Friday night, say after 6ish?
Agree re: broken brace, I noticed one of the engine lifting eyes as well, but for same reason decided not to bother - would rather have paid 150 for new brace as opposed to xxx\'s for new engine mounts.

Now now only joking :cheers
lol - you know im only playing! just a shame i ended up in the \'friendzone\' rather than the \'endzone\' - cos you ain\'t scoring there IYKWIM. :p
Picked up new strut brace from Peter tonight, gonna be getting fingers dirty 2moz - wheel alignment would probs be a good idea as well methinks, just in case.

Tell you what i nearly made the mistake of pulling the car by the strutbrace too but changed my mind at the last minute, looking at your pics good job i did :2Confused
I had to make a snap judgement at the time - admitedly, i wasn\'t aware of the towing points under the car.
But the way I seen it was a) risk a £1xx strut brace or b) risk using a point on the block which could\'ve been £xxx\'s to fix had it gone boobies skywards.
like I say - hard lesson learned. But if it helps others... DONT USE THE STRUT BRACE TO HAUL A TONNE AND A BIT OF REX ONTO A RECOVERY TRUCK
- can we make that quote a sticky mods please? :rollin :rollin :rollin
The front bumper usually hangs below the front towing eye, so if you decided to use that, you would risk badly damaging the bumper anyway, so the strut brace which costs £25+ is a better choice imo
