Just a quick question about what you guys think is a reasonable storage time. I\'ve just managed to put the 1000 miles back on the rebuilt motor, she\'s been mapped with oil change.
Now im not going to have much chance to use it till next year as im working away and will hardly be around much, but how long is it safe to leave the car. I\'ll probably get my wife to start it up every week or two, it wont be able to go for a ride though as she cant drive.
It\'s going to be stored in a heated garage, so there\'s no damp or anything. I\'ve stored my old MR-2 turbo in there for a couple of months without starting it, with the battery on trickle charge, and she started/run fine when I came back to her. I was just wondering weather it was safe or not for the RX7 to do the same?
Realistically I dont think its going to move till march. What do you guys think? Any tips or suggestions?
I wouldn\'t start it in the meantime - not unless someone takes it out for a good run to get everything heated up properly. After all, you want to get the nasty combustion byproducts out of the oil...
What I would do is hook up the trickle charger, put some fuel stabiliser into the petrol and just leave the car. Some people would suggest to either increase the tyre pressure or put the car on stands to avoid having the tyres go egg-shaped.
Once you\'re back to resurrect the car, take out the EGI fuse and crank it until you\'ve got proper oil pressure showing. You basically want to get the oil circulating properly before firing it up.
Yep - as Elford Tim - Don\'t start it when it can\'t go anywhere. Nasties in the engine as Tim says. I\'d research the pros and cons of squirting oil into the engine with the plugs out and spinning it over (after its come in hot on its last trip before storing). If your last run is a reasonable one in the dry then it should by OK until March, with just a battery charge and tyre pump up every month. My FB came out of a dealers in London in 1993, having stood storage conditions for seven and a half years!
Cheers for the reply\'s, I think i\'ll give it one last blast this weekend and that should do it!...
Yeh, interesting thread ........... is it ever possible that the internals of an engine could rust ....... I guess the important bit being the housings and the tips ........ probably a really stupid question but not the first time.

For the intermeidate period I dont imagine so, unless you have water seal damage?
My current RX7 I imported in early 2006 to find out it had a blown water seal and wouldnt start for nothing (even though it was sold to me as a grade 4 driveable car!!). When Pip tore down the engine the internal\'s had siezed, due to water ingress. I dont know how long the car had been stood in Japan though.

Yes, I\'ve seen it with cars that have been stored in inappropriate conditions (like a leaky garage) for a long time. But you\'re talking years without turning over the engine here.
Kevin,
Mine will pretty much be in the garage now until the weather improves, probably Feb time I expect. ( or once all the salt has washed away )
I keep mine on a trickle charge and do fire it up from time to time and run it up to normal temp then put it back in the garage. Seems to work for me!
If your MR2 was OK, can\'t see any reason why the rex won\'t be!
