id really love to no ...out of these 2 which is the most reliable car? as the pulsar has a rep for being really unreliable at the best of times!! but then the rex seems to have aswell, anyone on here whos owned both?
The pulsar SR20DET engine is very reliable, its the gear boxes you have to worry about as with a standard gearbox and clutch set-up, a few launches and you could screw it... one of my mates required 3 gearbox rebuild\'s in one year, and another m8s pulsar requires one right now...
As with rx7\'s, im sure theres people on here who can explain better than me what may cause reliabilty issues and how to counter them...
but id say rex all the way, no doubt :D
yep have to agree Pulsar gearbox\'s are very unreliable and to change a clutch is a expensive as the whole engine has to come out :eek
ive heard about unreliablity of pulsars but never owned one myself, also they are getting on a bit now, i have had a look at them before and theres alot of old dogs about. With rx7s i guess in a way the engine is quite sensitive, get something slightly off and there goes your engine. If you plan on modding it a must would be a different ecu, the most comon being the apexi power fc. Then when you have get your mods on get it mapped by a pro and you should be good to go. Also you have to keep them well maintained, oil change every 1000 miles, another thing to make sure you change is the fuel filter, they are a bit of a pain to change but if you leave one on there too long and it gets slogged bye bye engine. When you hear stories about rx7s being unreliable is when they are not looked after or badly tuned.
A mate of mine has a impreza running around 400bhp, my rx7 is around the same power and we have had them about the same time, he has blown his engine twice in that time, i have had a rebuild but through choice as it had got to 65,000 miles, didnt need one probably would have still been running strong now but did it just in case as the miles where getting high and i wanted to up the power which could have blown it. Also my rx is a weekend car so gets abuse most times i drive it :3gears-lh hehe
If you do go for a rx7 make sure u check it over well and read up on here what things to look out for.
I used to have one, box never gave me any probs and it was launched hard. The engines have a bad rep (pistons) but mine had a hks gt3037s at one point and handled it well with fuel and mapping. As with any otehr car, as long as it\'s looked after it will be reliable, depends on prev owners.
I had the misfortune of being into GTI-R\'s before the Jap rush, we had a UK spec one that was bought running 1 bar of boost/Exhaust and filter etc and ran 270 at the fly. Over the next two years we had nothing but trouble with it, first the Transfer box went (costing £1500) then the box its self went (another £1500) then when it finally had a good six months gap of good running it was taken to York drag strip where it pulled a 13 dead (to my amazement) but at a cost, on the last run it destroyed two plugs and blew all the lands on the Pistons so this in turn scratched the hell out of the Bores (resulting in a New Bottom end, can\'t remember how much that was but in the Thousands again) then after the lesson was learnet that Drag strips are bad!!! it was used for a Bit of Track day work (which it was not good at because of the dodgy brakes and the massive under steer) it was there engine No2 was needed, yet again the Lands on the Pistons went and killed the bottom end. Now being a bit P**sed it was decided a full blown 400hp conversion was in order (was a bit flush etc at that time) so it was packed up and sent to a guy called Tony Bardy in scotch Corner where it was breathed on by the Nissan Rally man himself (6k later) it was Long studed,Lightened and ballanced 2.4 conversion,Forged JE Pistons (that where custom made for it),Custom Turbo by M.I.E. Turbo\'s the Lot. After just getting it run in a mate took it to a local Shopping mall and it was Stolen (Cat 1 Alarm and all), two weeks later it was found dumped (ram raid) the T**t\'s had punctured the Sump going up a high curb at speed and kept on going, the result was a Con rod through the side of the Block and thats where it died.
FD\'s, the main thing is knowing what your getting!! There is no way round it they use plenty of fuel, but then so does its rivals (supra or Skybus will drink just the same for the same performance) then they are getting old now so i would suggest getting one with History (engine rebuild and rats nest repipe etc) then you\'ll be happy.
A word of advice, If you are looking at a GTI-R or a RX7 for the same money more likely than not you are looking at a poor example of an RX7 because you can get a GTI-R fo 2-3k now and a Minter for 5k ish where as an FD start at 4-5k for an Avarage one and go to 10-15k for a Nice one.
i currently own both. personally i prefer the rex. pulsar is amazing when it works. bottom ends are notorious for going once you up the boost. as i have found out. standard oil cooler is terrible.
they are just as bad as the fd for fuel consumption too.
pulsar is faster 0-60 but after that the fd pulls well past.
i raced a pulsar with 330bhp when my fd had just 300 and its fair to say i wiped the floor with the pulsar, after 100mph i was running rings round it.
i find the pulsar a bit tinny, kind of suzuki swiftish if you know what i mean.
rx7 feels new, kind of secure and well planted. inspires a lot of confidence on the road and it never once broke.
pulsar i am constantly fixing or upgrading something. always under the bonnet, if im not changing the engine then im putting a new clutch in or fixing the bloody rear brakes which are notorious for siezing.
its a great car when it works for that 15mins or so, and i have pulled past some things i never thought possible. but i find myself glued to oil pressure gauge and often drive with the radio off so i can get paranoid over the slightest \'off noise\' lol
id go for the fd every time, looks great, drive great and is much faster, and people apptreciate it more than my chav mobile lol. people always ask about the pulsar \'what have you done to your car \' and i find myself obliged in conversations to mention that it came looking like that from the factory and then list the spec lol

thats a common prob with pulsars, scooby\'s and evo\'s...after 100 they go a bit dead dead, but up to 100 theres not much that can touch them...except a rex ofcourse :yes
I\'ve owned both, to be fair i did go through 3 gearboxes in 1 yr as Norris gave me a 12month warranty.
Pulsar is a great car as to are all the jap monsters, but in all my track time in all the cars for the money the RX7 IS THEE BEST DRIVERS CAR YOU CAN OWN. Superb weight distribution, excellent brakes (DS2500 pads), great turn in confidence, awesome broadside control, crazy top end, mental 0-60 RW standard car, perfect driving position and cabin etc etc etc etc etc
All in all you could\'nt want for anything more (Ultima) unless your minted!
