Title: sabotage or accidental
Post by: purple&gold on December 02, 2007, 10:48:25 PM
i recently bought my first RX7 and drove it the 60mls home handled great and went like a bat out of hell well pleased with my purchase.
2 weeks later decided to put it in the shed to start stripping the interior  and few items under the bonnet to make ready to drift it .
started no problem first time ,but what a change i thought i was in a cement mixer it was vibrating so bad so took it for a spin backfiring like a lad with wind and no power to speak of sounded like the manifold was broke  but manifold OK so went to the plugs ,the back rotor exhaust plug HT lead came away in my hand it looks like its been cut but why would anyone cut just 1 HT lead i\'m thinking it must\'ve been rubbing on something ???has anyone had a similar problem and what was the cause.
by the way this is my third mazda RX i had a RX2and RX3 in my haydays
let me know what any of you think ?

hi martiny good to know there\'s still 1 rx2 left my first job was a trainee mechanic on rx2s,,and 616 mazdas the  performance for a 1150cc was unbelievable in 73 but the body wasn\'t up for the speed .busy restoring a datsun 1200 coupe close to finishing it thank god.

Yeah, I think their strategy for limiting the performance was to fit those pathetic 155 tyres!

It\'s amazing to think that the rotary engine is still manufactured considering the fuel consumption. in 1973 the best we could get out of a rx2 at 60mph was just over 22mile a gallon, and still today they\'re no more fuel efficiant but put your foot down and watch the guage go down but that scream from the rotary can\'t be bet.
did you ever strip a rotary motor easy, putting it back is another story those water seals are a nightmare the rest is simple but looking at the plumbing on the rx7 [thank god its not a turbo]i\'d hate to go near it ,took the plugs out and managed to crack the top plug in the front rotor.
did you ever drive the RO80 i did was going to buy 1 but couldn\'t handle the gear stick you couldn\'t use any force it had to be light as a feather ,seen a bike with a rx2 motor in it in the mid 70s can you imagine kept burning the leg off him but it could go ,beat all the jap bikes on the track .

No problem with rebuilding the motor. Have done 3 RX-2 rebuilds, and one of those lasted 5 years on the track.

Have just finished replacing engine on the RX-7 !! Not too difficult, but you need :

1) to write everything down ( and draw a lot)
2) make a checklist of what was removed ( to make sure you put it back)
3) A lot of time, and patience
4) Nimble hands, and tools , that can go into small places!
5) Finesse!

Yeah, its a real pity the engine didnt reach production a decade or 2 earlier - perhaps we\'d have better consumption today?
