Title: I need a new clutch, any suggestions
Post by: chrisJDM on December 02, 2007, 06:09:30 PM
A while back i had quite a bit of engine work done, still on standard twins but pushing nearly 400bhp at fly.  Still have a standard clutch which dosnt like it too much sometimes and doesnt like pulling away hard of the line.  I know soon im gona need a new clutch so any suggestions?? i was thinking i might uprate the flywheel aswell at the same time.

Ive had a look at some of the ACT clutch\'s which look good and a good price, i can get the clutch, flywheel and counterweight form the US for around £700 but thats not including shipping

Hiya,

Providing your car is not a Drag racer you need look no further than the clutch shown on the link below as this clutch will be fine on any Twin Turbo car and you can keep the stock flywheel if you wish thus keeping the cost right down,

Here you go

Thanks for the reply Chris but be careful with ACT as personaly I have heard horrors about them over the years from people who have fitted them over here and when the Exedy man from Japan came to see us he informed us that a lot of ACT stuff is reconditioned and not new.

yeh but a competitor would say that wouldn\'t they!!!!!!........I know many people who have used act kits myself being one of them and I or they have never had any problem with them......Whifbitz time attack car used it.....thrashed it to death and never let go once......Pettit swear by them.....RX7 store use them.......SP mortorsport.........and the list goes on.............

Now if they were that bad.......none of these reputable tuners would use them and put them in their demo cars would they.......

what the exedy man said is like saying Reworx is better than Dragon.... based on maybe one or two isolated incidents......(heard through the grapevine...

Without no concrete proof...........how do you know the exedy stuff is not reconditioned......?

maybe a trip to both factories is in order before we make judgements on how stuff is made before we start slagging them off; based on for want of a better word "hearsay"!!

Not having a go or anything geezer....just doesn\'t ring true!

Cheers

Woho keep yer Fur on ED, Monday morning is it :chat .

Many of our regular customers will tell you that we are not really bothered if we loose sales as long as the customer ends up with a good product, hence the post :cool .

Good for you if you have all these good reports and with the amount they seem to sell they must have good ones, but sorry with what we have heard and seen we would not sell the stuff and the same goes for EBC with brakes.

I have just spoken to Exedy and been told that I can print this that Exedy have just pulled out of a contract with ACT in America supplying standard pressure plates and after finding out that ACT were then forwarding on their Exedy units to Korea to have them uprated into "competition units" with out their knowlage

Exedy have pulled it\'s contract because of the complaints that ACT are receiving and Exedy have decided to distance themselves for the ACT company!.

BTW Exedy are part of the Daikin Manufacturing. Co. Ltd to EXEDY Corporation which is one of the largest Clutch manufacturers on the planet indeed every Japanese car apparently has an Exedy clutch fitted on the production line and this includes all the Mazda models for years and years including your RX-7 when it was new.

They also supply amongst others, HKS, Mitsubishi Rallyart and Mazdaspeed with competition clutches that are sold under their own brand names with Exedys approval.

If you would like to learn more about the respected Exedy corperation please look here
http://www.exedy.co.jp/english/company/history.html

Information is everything when people are spending their hard earned cash and this is why we are choosy about what we sell and the advise we give where ever possible gained from our own experience with these cars.

Hope this helps explain why we put the post up above:cool .

No worries mate fur is well and truly on...Believe me.:Thumbs-up ...might have helped if the info you just posted was on your original post....as reading the post seems like you were just relaying what some guy told you......glad you called exedy to confirm and if they pull out of A CONTRACT with ACT in America then all well and good....

My mum once told me remember that many a story is told without the real reasoning behind it ever being known. Thats why i\'m a firm believer of using my own experiences coupled with others. (as i\'m sure you do)

In future, i think rather than, saying be careful and horror story this and that; it would be beneficial to the person you are giving advise to explain why you have come to the conclusions you have (as you did partially in the second post)

Geezer, a few questions for you out of curiosity.

So are you not selling ACT because of what Exedy have told you?

Did they say they had an inferior product?

Ok Exedy believe ACT are supplying Exedy standard pressure plates to korea to get them uprated...if they are improving the pressure plate whats the problem?  (ive used a uprated ACT PP and a standard disc and it worked a treat all the way up to 425 bhp at the wheels....the standard FD clutch i was using died when i was 350 at the wheels)

Have you ever sold ACT?

Also what experiences have you had with ACT clutches?

Oh and whats up with EBC Brakes?

Cheers
Ed

Hi Ed, real pleased yer fur is still intact:cool .

Anyway Joking apart I have tried to answer you questions as best I can as to why MRP does not wish to sell ACT products, like I said a lot of people have good results with ACT but as we know “some” do fail and “some” is far too many for us to be comfortable with.

1/ So are you not selling ACT because of what Exedy have told you?

No it’s actually nothing to do with Exedy’s comments, I had dealings with cars long before SHY/MRP ever formed that had run ACT and either found wore out very quick with cars with little power or came across cars that suffered bad clutch judder.

2/
Ok Exedy believe ACT are supplying Exedy standard pressure plates to korea to get them uprated...if they are improving the pressure plate whats the problem

According to what I was told today complaints came back to Exedy that the “uprated” pressure plates were Exedy “uprated” units.

After Exedy carried out an investigation and found that their supplied standard pressure plates were being sent to Korea being “uprated” and then failing,
Exedy stopped the contract as it was misuse of the Exedy product.

It\'s maybe worth noting as well that MRP have sold many Exedy clutches over the last four years of different types and never experianced a failure

3/ Have you ever sold ACT?

No as we have always felt that we need faith and confidence in the products we sell rather than just try and make a quick buck unfortunately we feel we cannot put this faith in ACT’s product and will add that this personal choice.

It’s also worth noting that as distributors of Centre Force clutch’s, Splitfire gauges, Racing Brake and AEM we actually like American products, but sadly not the American ACT product

Also what experiences have you had with ACT clutches?
(see No 1)

4/ Oh and whats up with EBC Brakes?

I have stated many times that with our experience of EBC has shown no quality control and have seen cars with 2 sets of supposedly identical pads where one would be like cardboard and the other like granite.

It also scared me a while back to see an FD with EBC disc’s that were not only cracked but bright blue with the heat they could not cope with.

I did a bit of research into EBC and was told the quality control problem apparently comes about because they approach companies in Tiwan and he who is cheapest gets the contract and that quality sufferers because of this.

For the reasons above MRP has never sold EBC products but I will say that I am puzzled by what we have found with their car stuff because they have a brilliant name in the bike world.

Hope this helps.

I\'ve always liked OSG\'s, its my personal preference and has been since I got my silver FD in 2002 which came with one.

I can recall hearing (as in never seen a problem in person) one or two things about ACT - but on the other hand they are comparatively very cheap and the yanks mustve fitted zillions of them over the years; I cant see how they would be so popular if there really were major issues with quality or longevity.

I\'ve seen several Exedy failures, and experienced their response to warranty questions first hand. One specific case I recall was a CT-R with less than a thousand miles on a brand new clutch (not one of the cheaper ones either) and flywheel which looked like it had done 20K miles at the dragstrip! :D I\'m sure Blitz will recount the fun he had with his Pulsar clutches too ;)

A clutch often has a hard life at the end of the day - if you are unlucky you\'ll be replacing one ahead of time, regardless of the brand.

For a lot of people the ACT\'s present a very cost-efficient upgrade - and as a few above have shown, not looked back :)

Horses for courses, I\'d drive some ones FD with a clutch you are thinking of if poss, as they do tend to vary quite a bit - some ppl wont put up with the feel of some clutches which leads them to say they\'re **** when in fact they are probably very capable units.
