Yesturday i finaly got to see my car. Unfortunatly still got to wait for mot and registration ect before i can drive it.
Finaly found out i got Re-a wheels on the back that really need refurbing and some different wheels on the front.
Had a look under the bonnet no major surprises other than oil filter relocation kit that i didn\'t know it had.
It also starts first time hot or cold and it sound awesome.
Also discovered uprated discs and pads.
And after an inspection of the apexi rsm it\'s got some peak holds from japan still on it. This is where the real suprises come.
Engine rpm peak was over 11k
and top speed was 221kph
Also now we are guessing the engine has been rebuilt at some point as it\'s running very well and dials are showing 114k, will be getting it compression tested once i get hold of it. Can\'t wait but it\'s gonna be a couple of weeks yet.
11k
got any pics??
11k ?
has it had a bridge port done or something ?
it has to be a single with a bridge to be hitting 11k, no ?

There some pics on this thread. It on twins stock as far as i know but a bit difficult to tell. Any porting can\'t be that extreme as the tick over is smooth.
very nice car, blimey 11k, engine looks quite standard apart from the induction kit, odviously cant tell on internals but are you sure its safe revving to 11k, u might wana get it checked out
13B - REW engine will peak to 11K, but that is on a RSR version, and it doesn\'t look like a RSR ?
rsr?????
im intrigued
13B REW RSR peaks to 11k ?

Everyone needs one of those in their lives
what are the differences that allow it to peak to 11k ?

John Yorke\'s yellow FD was a RSR and the engine the Dragon drag car ran was a 13B-REW engine built to rev to 11K rpm.
This was a RSR i nearly bought in Japan but missed out by 4hrs !!!! If you blow the pic up you can clearly see its says RSR in the window advert.

Since you asked, get your reading glasses on peeps :rollin :rollin :rollin
You will notice there is a massive difference between the two engines for the FD

Apparently the RSR is only available in Yellow too and is 1997 at the earliest i believe although might be wrong on that point ?
I have a 97 RSR and wouldn\'t like to rev it to 11k. Mine has quite a few engine mods and still wouldn\'t take it above 7.5k. Didn\'t even know it could. They only came in black and yellow.
are the 13B-REW rare ?
i know about them and i know they are not common but are they as rare as a 20B ?
11K.
As standard.
hmmmmm
Me dont think so.
I think (may be wrong here) that ALL FDs have the 13B-REW powerplant, just at slightly different states of tune. None of the engines had modifications (as standard) that would allow an 11k rpm limit.
The RS-R was built to commerorate 30 years of the rotary engine, but didn\'t have any significant engine differences to the other variants released at that time - which included an RZ, RS, RB and RB. Bathurst. What was special about the RS-R is that you could only have one in black or yellow (competition yellow mica I think) and they had anthracite-coloured wheels as standard. They\'re incredible rare, as only 500 were built I think, between 1997 and 1998.
Oh and the RS-R also had the awesome Bilstein suspension that was on the Series 4 RZ. Power was, I believe, 265PS at most as that was what the RZ was producing at that time.
As I said, I might be wrong so please don\'t shout at me - just putting what I think is true into the mix!!
What year is your FD, sounds like if it\'s not from 97-98 that\'ll answer the question about it being an RS-R :)
Very well put FD Dreamer.

Lol, wtf are you on about Gurj?!
As FRDreamer said above, 13B-REW is the same motor as all FD\'s have, and the RS-R was just a commemarative ltd edition with a few bits chucked on.
No production engines were ever built to run any thing like 11K, I\'d guess your RSM is/was fubar\'d. Cant see why anyone wuould have the rev limit set that high so can only think that if it is a genuine 11K it was on a bad down shift or mis-shift in which case you\'re lucky nothings touched and done engine damage...

Im sure i read it somewhere unless it was a one off running 11K ??? deffo been mentioned
All stock FD engines were built the same. just ancilliaries etc were changed over the years...sorry big G...
We\'v had a car thats done 285kph at 8100rpm ;)

Both spot on.
Johns car (RSR) may have been capable of hitting 10k but that was with a lot of engine mods.
The only other item I can think of that made the RSR a little quicker was a 4.3 diff, giving a better low down acceleration. Stock diff is 4.1 and Auto 3.9 from memory.
Believe there are only 2 of these in country, a black one Ive seen at Trax and Johns old car now with Royal.

Neither of these mods have anything to do with getting a Rotary to rev to 11k.
As others have said, all FDs have 13B REW , and they are all pretty much the same engine.
If it\'s hit 11,000 rpm then Tim rxmotors must of been driving:bandit
Brian
this link even say 13b-rews are from fd\'s

Anyway i will have to see why the peak revs are so high. It\'s probably a bad shift down as said above. i would have thought the limiter wouldn\'t be set high enough to rev it that high under accelaration.
Quote from: 20B_boyI\'d guess your RSM is/was fubar\'d.
:Thumbs-up
so some rotary engines are able to rev to 10 or 11k, normal ones like mine of course go to 8k, how do you get them to rev higher?? and safely?? it sounds like 11k is a little extreme but how about a little higher than standard?

That thread is showing the difference between the FC3S 13BT engine and the FD3S 13B-REW engine.
Boys, do your research properly before it ends in tears!

Its not easy.
You would start by purchasing a book called "how to modify your RX-7" from Mazdatrix. There are lots of internals that need strenghtening. The main problems are the centrifugal force of the Rotor can cause the Eccentric shaft to bend and then the Rotor can touch the housing. Then the apex seals have a lot more centrifigul force against the housing, too. Another problem is harmonic vibration which can cause the through bolts to snap.
etc,etc.
Now lets ask why would you want to push the revs up? In an NA car, sure, you get more power.
In a Turbo car, there\'s not much point. Probably far cheaper to modify to accept more boost, then up the boost.
Bigger turbos need more exhaust gasses too spool so higher revs are need to keep the turbo spooling otherwise you\'d get masses of lag between each gear change.
Sorry mate if your fd reved to 11k in that state of tune it would most likely be toast. My old yellow car [the RSR] in its last [presant] guise had a totaly different engine the Cosmo 13BRE, considerable work was carried out internaly and the rev limit was set at 9K, peak power was hit at 8250 [465 atw] and ran a VERY large extended street port. I have never seen a stock[ish] exceed 155mph so I would guess that bit of kit in the car is VERY suspect.
Good luck with your ownership, but dont expect anything wonderfull if that bit of kit is telling the truth:confused:
it could just be an electrical glitch caused by the battery running low on the boat from jap. how does it run?
matt
runs fine. 221kph is only about 140-145mph. I don\'t know why the peak rpm is so high but that is peak (which means it only had to read that once) it might be a problem with the unit could be anything. Either way will have to do a health check on the motor probably early next year. I wonder if it was ever on the wrong setting ie for a 4 cylinder engine instead of rotary that would give an inacurate tacho.
Quote from: TimmyBigger turbos need more exhaust gasses too spool so higher revs are need to keep the turbo spooling otherwise you\'d get masses of lag between each gear change.
Not intending to critisize, but your statement is misleading. An engine\'s RPM does not govern a turbo\'s spool time or how long it might take to produce effective positive pressure. This is soley governed by the Turbo\'s efficieny range, the amount of heat produced in the exhaust gas, the exit velocity and the expansion rate.
BTW, I\'m only a geek on Monday mornings!:mmmm
That\'s far too much technical information to absorb on a Monday. Very interesting though, when I get back from work I may try to take it in again!
With any luck it is just some kind of electronic gremlin. I have a performance-logging device that uses G-force to measure all sorts of things and that sometimes displays figures that are totally inaccurate (despite being spot-on most of the time) and I read this month in evo that the Fast Fleet LP640 apparently hit 249mph on the road, according to its computer!! Let\'s hope something similar happened in your case, and someone hasn\'t put it into 3rd at 140mph!! :Hammer

As John Y said earlier - downshifting and hitting 11k rpm would almost certainly lunch something in the car... either the engine or gearbox. It\'s likely to be a glitch in the electronickery.
I did look at the mods required to up the rev limit significantly and the first 1000rpm doesn\'t require a huge amount of work - maybe ~£1k with a tuner on top of a rebuild! Pushing it up to 10k is a much bigger job and beyond that is huge.
I\'m talking about mods that would allow it ro run those revs for racing etc.
As said by others - you\'re better off upping the boost and freeing up flow than raising the rev limit masses on a turbo car.
Saying that though - once you open up the porting the peak power arrives a bit later so more headroom would potentially give you access to the fattest part of the power band.
9k would certainly suit mine but at 8k engine life should be decent enough!
