Title: Water Pump
Post by: SmbFD3S on November 29, 2007, 06:19:56 PM
Ok so for a few weeks i\'ve been trying to locate a small water leak on the rex... I was fairly sure it wasn\'t the seals as there are none of the usual symptoms, bubbles in the water, hard pipes etc... so decided to lightly coat the front part of the engine in a flour mist.... Ran the car for a while until up to temp then left another 5 mins for the fans to come in a couple of times, which seems to be at 93 degrees on the Commander...

Anyway left for a day to cool and do a heat / cool cycle and came back to it tonight.  From the water trail/drips left in the flour it would appear it\'s coming from the weep hole on the underside of the water pump...

I\'m assuming this mean the internal seals have gone and need a new pump right??

Anyone got a new one fairly cheap, need the car to be fairly tip top for a dyno run to map the PFC...

Cheers

Anyone with any further advice would help.... Is the pump repairable, in other words i see you can buy just the seal and gasket seperately, anyone tried this??

It\'s not a lot of money for a new pump tbh. I think it was around £70 when I needed one.

Following an enquiry from Scott I thought it may be an idea to post this icase it assists other people.

The pump is not rebuildable and not a difficult job to change.

The pump comes with a new gasket and apart from a belt if needed, nothing else is required

A new pump costs £78 plus £3.00 postage plus vat/£96.32

Even if you do not buy from us please do not keep driving the car like this because even if it\'s a small drip not the gland (seal) can now fail at any time and it will then cost you an engine as you only need to cook a Rotary once and 99% of the time it will die!

Hope this helps

Hi Clive,

Thanks for the advice, managed to talk the missus into buying me this for xmas lol so will place the order hopefully to get it before then.... While drained i\'ll prob also have some of that sealer that you have being as the engine\'s now on 57k without a rebuild and might aswell put a new lower temp thermostat in if you do them,  will have a quick look?? :D

Cheers,

Scott

I like the idea of flower in the engine, very cool!

lol, no way of flour getting into the engine mate so no worries there, this is a really old trick and sometimes the only way of findng these problems, works really well for oil leaks too, and being flour comes off easy too :D

Finally managed to do the water pump, thanks to the misses for the xmas present lol

Everytime i take something new off a bloody bolt snaps tho, i understand why they put type 6 bolts in to protect the cast threads but it\'s just a pain in the arse really....  Anyway, welded a new nut to it and turned it out slowly after plenty of soaking in oil...
Problem is when doing this it broke the seal on the pump housing so ended up having to take the whole thing off and put a new gasket on, must admit the pump from Clive was spot on with the original but half the price, bargain :)

Filled it up with the throttle body hose off and did all the air bleeding everyone recommends and also put some of that sealant in from Clive also, running like a charm now (thouch wood) and no leaks :)
