Title: Soon to be new RX 7 owner
Post by: gregmacd on November 28, 2007, 09:32:57 PM
Hey guys,
sometime in the next few days (with any luck) I will be the proud owner of a \'99 FD3S. She is largely standard. There\'s a straight through exhaust and an APEXI PFC with a mapping to account for the exhaust and UK fuel.

My previous car (sort of) was a stage 1 200SX so I am used to a car that tries to kill you on a regular basis. I only had 225 tyres all round on the 200 and so it would go if you let it. I shackled it with Racelogic Traction Control because it was my daily driver.

The RX7 will be my weekend car now I have a Peugeot 406 beater.

The RX7 has 265 tyres at the rear.

So my question (finally I hear you cry) is: will my new toy try and kill me?

Is it only me but i found it catchable (is that even a word?) i came from fwd and over the past few months of ownership have had the ass step out numorous times and because of such excellent steering feedback found it amazingly controllable.
Imo the car\'s characteristics allow you to feel when its gonna go although you have to be damn quick.

Maybe its just not caught me out yet.

Other cars Ive driven once they go all you can do is pray, vx turbo/mr2\'s springs to mind.

I found my RX fairly controllable on the limit. Has given me a few surprises in the wet, but shouldnt be a problem if you\'re on the ball. With the sharp steering, I found it fairly simple to get the back end in shape before it ended in tears. I previously had a Corvette. Thats a whole different story.

The wet is the problem.

I never had a problem with the 200 in the dry it was very easy to feel when she was about to start oversteering, because the understeer would come first and unless you did something silly like lift off you could bring it back in line.

It\'s the wet that frightens me about the RX7 hmmm I may well see if I can find a group buy somewhere for traction control.

Thanks very much for your comments guys and you can rest assured there will be many photo\'s uploaded when I can bring myself to get out of her :)

lol - well it will handle a lot better than ya 200!!! iv had a marcos LM500, a supra TT and the RX is way batter at handling on the limit and as others have said if ya do loose it its easier to pull back. saying that its a much more powerful car than your 200 was!

In reverse order.

I certainly don\'t believe I\'m a great driver but even a careful driver can slip up after a long drive from Devon to Reading through rush hour traffic on a wet roundabout with an awkward camber. Then again I\'m also not an opinionated ass with an over-inflated ego (um actually ... :)).

My 200 was a very good stage 1 so probably around 270 at the fly. My RX-7 is a standard 99 model with just a "performance" exhaust and mapped pfc so will be around 280 bhp.

So the Rx-7 isn\'t that much more powerful than the 200.

However it does feel signficantly faster than the 200 but then I think that might be down to twin vs. single turbo.
