Title: Fils pink to red ongoing restoration
Post by: fil_auto on November 26, 2007, 02:04:00 PM
Hi to all. :wave

Recently purchased the car below - 1995 RX7 Type R Bathurst Edition and have been researching / planning for some months now and believe she\'ll require the usual rebuild after ( what I believe and have been told ) is a water seal failure!! Seems to make sense after reading alot of posts on here with ref to the above mentioned problem - have spoken to Carl @ Hayward too and am hoping to get the car to him ASAP for checking / fixing.....
Trained it upto Shropshire last week and drove her back best part of 160 km\'s before she got seriously hot, the warning buzzer came on, she required lots of water and time to chill!!!??
Anyways, few piccies..... ttfn Phil :Thumbs-up:burnout

Well guys, many thanks for the warm welcomes and of course advice..... :Thumbs-up

just following up really now, have filtered through the forum and found loads of info on coolant issues, overheating, water seal failure etc....

Interesting though, hadn\'t driven her for a good few days, checked coolant levels this morning and topped up accordingly, distilled water n coolant mixture.
Printed off details / instructions with ref to a flush and of course was very interested in the tell-tale water seal failure test I found on here, ie: start from cold, rad cap off and watch for loads of tiny bubbles......... was surprised / happy n excited to find they were not present!!!??? #;o)
Also, no hard / solid pipe issuies.....

However, upon a little drive to work - 17 miles / 30 odd mins, warmed her up as per and off I went watching, wiating with baited breath for the water temp to rise and the buzzer to kick off as she has!!! Nope, no worries there and not too hot when arriving at work...... although .....and more food for thought or needing to get it checked out ASAP really.... very little boost on 1st / 2nd turbo..... in the small amount of time I\'ve had / driven her, 1st turbo boosting to 0.4 and then 2nd to 0.8....... only managed a max of about 0.3 on both turbo\'s on the drive this morning????!!!!

The plot thickens..... :eek

A little off-topic...but the RE-A spoiler you\'ve got is the one that I am interested in getting, but wherever I\'ve see it on a car it looks to be mounted a little too far back. Can you tell me if it would mount further forward, or is the wiper in the way or something.

The reason to ask you is that I have only ever seen it on three cars...in any pictures worldwide! Yours being number 3!

Welcome and nice car you have there, i\'d change your plate on the front and put it somewhere else first of all as that is a cooling restiction - mine was the same when i first got it. I\'ve got mine like the ferrari 599 style now ;-)

Hope you find out whats happening 2 the engine before any damage is done as they are awesome motors (but be careful in the wet lol)

Oh well, lovely TOAD CAT 1 alarm n immobiliser installed this morning, least that\'ll keep the insurers happy - best I get on and fill in all those forms re mileage, mods etc now......

well, back on the road and all seems sweet! #;o).... picked up this morn and covered about 100km\'s back home..... all good and no overheating.... :Thumbs-up

got 500 miles to knockup not pushing more than 3.5k rpm.... then an oil n filter change! have already been given the right filter and have been recommened to use a good quality mineral oil - am I right in thinking along the lines of magnatec etc... 5w40 right / 5w30???

then another 1000 miles I understand, back to the garage for a check over, plug change, service etc....

hopefully I can then njoy the car I picked up last november!! #;o)

just a bit of an update really - car flew through its MOT yest ( which was nice, seeing as though its still in run in mode, prob running rather rich and idling high )... engine now nearly run in - only 150 miles more and then back for its service, check over and the like ....
Have spent a gd few hours cleaning and polishing of late, trying to get all the reds the same shade! Another session needed but nearly there #;o)

Well, realised it\'s been a long time since I updated this!!!!

Bit of a breakdown / update.... to date ;)

Nov 2007 - purchase of 1995 RX7 Type RB.

Car purchased knowing about impending water seal failure - price reflected ( funny thing is - it actually died with water seal failure / tip gone on the way back from it\'s MOT after I\'d put the deposit down..... he got a replacement engine, all good... and then guess what.... water seal failure again! .... ( I drove home 160 kms before it got rather hot and need to stop and breathe / drink!! Was quite a fun journey until then! Tubs working as they should.... I think?!)

Feb 2008 - off for a rebuild due to a water seal failure!

28th March 2008 - pick car up - run in period = 500 miles not pushing more than 3.5k rpm.... then an oil n filter change!

then another 1000 miles, back to the garage for a check over, plug change, service etc....

June 2008 - had nearly finished running in - flew through MOT, which was nice.

June 2008 - Aug 2009 - finished off running in miles / a few services @ engine builders, took back a good few times to try and diagnose the following and generally dealing with n/a power due to tubs not working as they should! Like about 0.3 bar! Think it popped to about 0.6 once and for a split sec - it felt really good at the time! Wow, living the dream.... not!

Silenced mid-pipe fitted by engine builder - problem still there but it did sounded nice / better and went a little better ( OMG I was sooo naive after being told \'I don\'t really go by the boost gauge, more of how it feels when driving and I can feel it\'s putting down good power!!!! )... since then I\'ve found out it\'s just a straight through decat with extra welded pipes for the air pump, nothing silenced about. mines pretty quite due to the RE-A backbox and a smaller bore ...... . what a J.B(lunt)! LOL

Anyways..... long story short because all that is behind me know......

August 2009 - Managed to acquire an Apexi ECU- even managed to fit myself and do the self learn stuff - awesome!

19th August 2009 - After much and I mean much deliberation / research / recommendation etc etc..... and after going back and back to engine builder and TBH being given the run around....

Decided to take the FD to Carl & the boys @ Hayward....... what can I say, should have and wish I\'d gone there in the first place....... ( we all learn in different ways right! )

So first thing upon arrival, of course was the compression test, whilst warm - Geoff having fun removing the plugs when the engine is that hot ( bet they love that part ) ..... which the other builder couldn\'t really do... apart from supply with the old standard compression readout on a little piece of card! Legend!

Anyways, what was a nice surprise to start with is that obviously the \'other\' engine builder could build an engine... as the compression test came back good - with nice and even mid to high 7\'s... good times, now let the fun begin!

Off the boys went trying to figure out WTF the tubs weren\'t doing.... after a few hours and not alot of joy, they gave me the option to try non-sequential... thank you please, v nice, was amazinating for me to feel what the car should actually be like....

So, as I actually wanted to leave Newbury with a car feeling like it should ... I opted for this option and of course then Carl went out and got his map on..... obviously, it was now even better / faster...... and that\'s where am I am now basically - albeit a good few thousand miles on!

Car feels awesome, pushing about 300 atf ( guestimated but certainly nippy enough and plenty to see most things off that I encounter ) and in between all this I\'ve been concentrating on working from ground up - would love to get it painted and really, really want to... but have decided to work upwards.....

So far:

- mapped & going well ( .8 / .9 ish ... sometimes a bar! )

- recently got new wheels ( RegaMasters )

- recently had new discs / pads / lines / fluid fitted / bedded in... OMG, they work nicely! ( Brake MC stopper fitted now too! )

- now just gotta get round to having the next set of mods / upgrades fitted / installed / mapped!

- air pump removal ( blanking plate kit and pulley / belt from Danny boy at the ready )

- Feed Stylee skirts to fit too at some point ( still to fit! )

- then at some point, when all that\'s done.... I\'ll get a nice coat of red all over it! Might happen soon, might not, will depend on when I get a call from a client of ours saying he\'s pulled a favour and there\'s space in the paintshop!

Anyways, pics of how it used to look above ( as you\'ve seen ) and now a rake of pics I\'ve mangled together showing wheel fitment, spacers, brakes etc etc before and after... oh a few bits waiting to go on!

Spacers on and fitment sweet! ;)

Brakes, pads, MC stopper, spacers, Apexi GT, filters, air pump idler pulley, Apexi titanium exhaust, new number plate etc etc all fitted!

Following bits all fitted now! ;)
