Post by: leeroy_25 on November 25, 2007, 06:46:49 PM
Guy\'s has anyone here (or do you know anyone) tried to put a Nissan Skyline GTR engine in to a FD3??
Does it even fit? I might have a measure up.. I am toying with ideas for my next project now!!

I have seen this done in America in a yellow FD around 8 years ago in I think Turbo magazine

The engine looked absolutely Huge and very stuffed in and by the looks of it only really suited for Drag as it had so much weight so far forward.

Stick the question into ask or google and see what you get.

Have read a few posts and the general concensus is it\'s not a good idea! I can see why.. What about a hyabusa engine? keeps the weith and size down?!

The yellow FD has a 2JZ in it I think, not an RB26.
Thsi is the only one I know about http://www.dragworx.com/viewtopic.php?t=48&highlight=rb26
We\'ve just sold a wide arch shell to a customer who plans to put a SR20 in though.

I\'m quite sure the yellow rx7 had a Supra engine transplanted not a RB26 :D

An FD would be too heavy for a hyabusa.

If a piston was to be what you wanted then I would be hard presed to go past a sr20 as well as they are small enough to fit into the engine bay and can be tuned for 400hp without too much hassle....i.e it has been done before, not that it will be cheap. Must say it would be hard pressed to also go past the ls v8 as it has also been done before in this country and as far as i can tell the guy on here who does them seems pretty clever and also very happy to help others with advice. Hmm mind yo a cosworth 4 pot can also be bought for less than £1500 these days.....oh and the newish honda motor that readilly puts out 240hp from factory.............the list goes on.
  cheers, michael,......born to hybrid.

Well.. Thank you guy\'s I will ponder on that and see how I get on with my Rotary lump first! Just fancied something a little different.. and maybe more bomb proof than a rotary! Benst of both worlds.. looks, handling and power!
Hyabusa lumps can be tunned to get serious power (400bhp+) with the aid of a turbo or supercharger.. not cheap.. Car may need lightening some what too?

def go with the hyabusa if you think you can shed at least 500kg from the fd!

What about a lexus Twin turbo\'d V8 from the (Lexus) Toyota Soarer?

All alloy, light, big horsepower, small size. Have been in a FB Drag car fittted with one. It was awesome:3gears-rh

the twin turbo lexus soarer is a 1jz-gte which is a straight 6. And it is 2.5l version of a 2jz-gte found in a supra, i got a feeling there both around the same size.
The soarer with a v8 or is a v6, anyway it\'s n/a. Or thats what i thought anyway.

please spare me.... this is only my humble opinion but anyone that puts any engine into an fd unless it is big, big hp without injection is mising the point.
If htey wanted a good looking car with a carby fed 8 then buy a mustang.
just confuses me this kind of thing in this day and age........

The thing is some people buy the FD version because of the way it looks and not because its a rotary, thus they get a V8 in for everyday use and better reliability but lose non of the FD\'s looks. Some people are not bothered about big bhp but just want a stunning car :cheers

I was first drawn to the FD purely because of the way it looks knew nothing about the engines, but now realise its rather cool being different and the noise the engine makes is second to none esp the bridge ported variety :InLove

The SR20 is a good solid engine - takes lots of abuse and produces power relatively cheaply - 300bhp can be easily had for a small outlay.
However, it sounds like arse!

The 1UZ V8 from a Soarer seems to be more of a big, lazy lump - however, it\'s reasonably light, and with ITB\'s sounds absolutely immense!

The 1JZ is a very very strong engine once you sort the HG - takes a lot of power and does it with style. However, i\'m lead to believe that it is very hard to find a manual box for one for a sensible price, if that is what you are after. The auto is very good though, but whatever floats your boat.

RB26 sufffers greatly from skyline tax, but i guess that\'s not dissimilar to FD tax anyways! parts are expensive, but you get ITB\'s, twin turbo\'s, and well over 300bhp as stock, with lots more very easily released. They are, however very expensive to get hold of.

RB25 could be a good bet though - you can get a crashed R33GTST with a  good engine for less than 2k, sell most of the bits, and nearly break even, but be left with a box and engine :) PFC\'s are very hard to get hgold of for them though.

ITB\'s on an rb26 stock? I think that even 1000bhp drag cars use just a single large TB and a surge tank.

Never the less i think RE-a have proven there\'s no need to change the engine in an fd.

Tho i would like to have a v8, i think i will have to buy a yank car in a couple of years.

They\'re more for control, than power AFAIK, but i know little about these things :Santa

Guy\'s.. I love the FD shape which is what first atracted me.. Also I wanted to see what all the fuss was about with the rotary engine! So far I love what I have found and the only reason I suggested a change was to be diferent and maybe have something more reliabe than a rotary engine is apparently! I have just seen on you tube a coupld of 2jz conversion.. will look for the RB26 one and post a link if I can. I am mad for a free manikin! I would never put a
V8 in such a beautiful delicate car! No offence to anyone who has/is! But likewise would love a V8 at some point! might just go buy a range rover and convert it inot a ow rider like they did on top gear a few years ago LOL!

the 1jz is the same physical size as the 2jz, although the 2 is slightly higher stroke to attain that increase in 500cc.

RB26 would never fit it is too tall.

If I was to keep my car and put a different engine in, I would go cosworth.
