Title: FD engine differences
Post by: MintyFresh on February 19, 2004, 07:37:03 PM
i know there is a difference between the engine in a type S and an RZ, but what is it that makes the difference?

ty[e S is the slowest and RZ the quickest, but is it the ECU thats slowing one down or is everything (exhaust, filter etc...) doing the job?

how easy is it to get a 255bhp type S upto RZ standards?

OK, the only difference was in the post 98 models, they used a different set of turbo\'s so that they could get the 280BHP.

UK models were 235BHP
Jap models were 265BHP
Then post 98 they up\'d the power the 280BHP. But the engine stayed the same.

Other than that the only difference was the interior.

Minty a fair amount of the questions you are asking have the answers already posted in the Hints and Tips Forum (http://www.mazdarotaryclub.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=40)

 According to Brian Long\'s book \'RX7 - Mazda\'s Rotary Engine Sportscar\' he states that up to \'96 the FD Engine for all markets was exactly the same and produced 255bhp.  On pg. 145 it says that due to the different measurement system the European spec. FD\'s were quoted at 237bhp.

In \'96 the power went up to 265bhp - only the Touring \'X\' model kept the 255bhp engine.

In 1997 (according to the book) improved design and reduced friction alowed engineers to extract 280bhp from the engine.:)

From what I can see, the RZ is a more race orientated model, which had primary objectives in weight saving, such as the Kevlar Seats etc. although there were other enhancements such as  light weight alloys & better brakes.

Being that much lighter than the other models is the RZ\'s main advantage - but not the only one.

Ok my understanding is that the UK model only had 235BHp due to emissions laws. So we had to have dual cats in the system, jap spec cars only have one cat.

The later japs models went up to 280BHP becuase they changed the turob pack for a better version. I think I read somewhere that they had changed the design of the blades or something.

The 255-265bhp change was when the ECU got changed from 8bit to 16bit.

There were late model cars that still had 265bhp, like Max\'s blue one (possibly RB).

There is a list around somewhere that details them all.

I have a \'96 (16bit ecu) RZ, which I believe after doing my research, should be 265bhp.  The 98+ RZ (White or Grey for the Spirit R) had 280bhp, but the RS and possibly RB had that as well.

I haven\'t had mine dyno\'d, but the engine was rebuilt by WGT when it came over 2 years ago, and it goes plenty well enough for me!!!:D
