Hi, im new to the rotary world...and was looking to buy a rx7 FD twin turbo to work on and get rebuilt... to take me to germany nurburgring in about 2 years time tops....
will this car be reliable to take me there be thrashed and bring me back no problems.. or am i better off looking at the s2000( which i also wanted)... i own an mr2 turbo and need to upgrade... i really do like rx7s but its just the reliability factor...
even after its rebuilt how will it be and is there going to be alot of work to look after it after a rebuild... and how much is the average rebuild?
Also what kind of common problems do the rx7 twin turbo suffer from engine wise i know rotor tips is one of the main ones...
Thanks...
Use the search facilty it is your friend, your questions have been answered before many times.
But in terms of reliabilty a Honda s2000 will be much cheaper to run to the ring but not as fast.
hmmm... ok cheers...
after its rebuilt depending on mods if its well maintained and well mapped should be very reliable, you only hear the horror stories when they are poorly miaintanied and not looked after or not mapped properly, whenever you make a change get it mapped and get it done by someone who knows what they are doing. Some people think you can just chuck a new intercooler on or a dcat and it will take it, this is when you will have problems, needs to be mapped.
However if you are just looking for a standard one should be no problem
MR2\'s are definately more robust IMHO, I\'ve tried to murder a few of them without success ;)
But the RX7 seems a bit more fragile in stock form, but with a few bits here and there it really does get as solid as any other car, the usual bushing, shocks gone etc can happen to any car.
But going from a MR2 to a Lotus (very poor) to the RX7 I\'d say the RX7 is the best of both world, very good suspension setup and chassis (sadly unlike the MR2) but with a stereo you can hear and A/C (unlike the Lotus!).
Saying about s2000\'s, a friend of mine has gone through 3 engines on them, all in warranty fortunately, and one was because the machanics fitted the new engine and left a load of swarf in the the inlet manifold, so 3 miles down the road and it was another dead engine.
Not sure about the RX but apparently the s2000 is a set of pads per trackday!!!
ok thanks guys... im just doing the research for the fd... just to get ideas of how they behave... the re amemiya rx7 dont really help my decision... makes me want one asap!!!! lol
the first few mods if you want to keep it standardish and reliable are:
uprated radiator - tend to get hot if being thrashed for a while
apexi power fc and commander - get it mapped, they can map it to a safe level and make it better than the standard map, also can map it for uk fuel.
commander is very useful as you can keep an eye on all the engine parameters i.e. water temp, air temp, boost level, knock etc. which is very useful as the stock water temp gauge is useless
decat and uprated downpipe are good mods for a little extra power.
An RX7 is a superb car for the Nurburgring, bought mine exactly for this reason.
Took it there, awesome, infact incredible and unbeatable driving track, mine is standard and the only part it suffered was the 180+mph back part of the the course which is on a slight incline constantly. The RX7 could\'nt pull it\'s self past 145mph (not enough torque) :Grrr
We got 2 of us and all our camping gear in the car for the DTM weekend, just take lots of money for fuel as this was a killer.
