Title: Shift up/coolant buzzer
Post by: neil_jdmr on November 20, 2007, 05:27:43 PM
Ok so my car doesnt buzz when it should be warning me to change gear.

I can recall i have heard it before but maybe only once or twice when i first got the car and its still in the same standard trim.

Anyway, where/how do i test it?

cant tell you how to test it apart from red lining it then it should come on definately, sure someone more knowledgeable may have an idea if you can test any other way

You have heard the Buzzer once or twice? :Nono!  Shame on you, Its the best feature .

If you broke it however, Im proud of you! :3gears-rh

Anyway, To test the Buzzer, Disconnect the coolant switch in the radiator.

Sorry to revive an old thread but have been trying to locate this plug for the temp sensor on the radiator so i can test my coolant buzzer but cannot find it anywhere.

Can you see it from over the top or do i need to look for it through the front intake in the bumper??

Pics please lads

Its the sensor that is on the front of the water pump housing (where you fill the coolant) follow the wire back about 3" and you`ll find the plug

Ah right,

I saw that sensor, it has one small black cable going up the plug I dismissed it as i expected the temp sensor to have a pair of wires instead of just one.

I dont have a pfc (yet) but also havent ventured too far into the red either, out of interest where is the factory rev limiter set as ive been to almost 8krpm and it was still climbing??.

Also where is the buzzer itself if it need replacing??

Right, sorted found the temp sensor plug had cracked and broken due to the heat and wasnt getting continuity through the plug so have replaced it and now getting the buzzer at 7.5-8k rpm. so happy days:)

I must comment though it feels like its holding back from 7k onwards hence i have been shifting up earlier so i cannot pin point when its gone off.

Do all fd\'s drop off after 7k ???

On the first turbo and up to 6.5k on the second it holds a steady 0.85bar
but after 7k it has dropped to 0.6 then even to 0.5 by 8krpm.

Is this normal behavior.?????

The car is bone standard by the way with an exception to hks racing suction kit

Dunno whether this\'ll come out legibly or not. It\'s the page from the owners\' manual where it mentions the "shift" buzzer, and it doesn\'t really say what it\'s for, just says it happens at around 7,400 rpm on manuals and 6,900 rpm on autos.

It does however call it the "Engine overrevolution (RED LINE) warning buzzer" (sic) which is a very grandiose title. Also makes it sound like A Bad Thing To Hear, since it\'s under the box that says "Dont run the tachometer needle into the RED ZONE. This may cause severe engine damage."

Got to remember, these guidelines are designed with dense Americans and product liabiltiy in mind. All manufacturers build in comfort zones on engine thresholds. Use the extra bit of revs once in a while to avoid having to change gear mid-corner, but don\'t hit them regularly when annihilating victims off the lights. It\'s just like overrevving a two stroke, it\'s not like there are heavy valve trains to tangle or cam bearings to overheat. But it\'s also not like you\'re making any significant power by then, either.
