Title: Who Wins Thread....
Post by: Fish on November 20, 2007, 04:52:53 PM
I wonder how many users will have a negative post count when the \'Who Wins\' thread gets pruned due to the amount of bandwidth it\'s taking up on the forum....

I suggested this ages ago too stop the whinging from certain members..
As long as the original page/post count is kept somehow i doubt anyone would mind.

Agreement i think. would be a shame to lose the thread count after all our hard work but i dont think we need every post now. Maybe just the first page or then the last 10 or so.
Just my 2p worth

Didn\'t realise it was that big tbh! Could loose the first 700 pages and it wouldn\'t matter too much..Like you say though keep the counts..

Well if the posts are deleted the post count will be altered.

There are plans to add some new area\'s to the site that will be bandwidth intensive so we are looking at trimming a lot of this thread as Fish said. By the very nature of who wins its only the last poster that really matters. As regards post counts thats down to Fish and the other admin but i would of thought the post counts will drop like they do when we clear out the old for sale posts. I suppose one option is to reset everyone to zero when we upgrade the software..........that should get a few comments:Hammer

reset to 0 ......... noooooooooooooooooooo

on another forum i use - they lock threads once it reaches 1000 posts - this keeps the bandwidth down

Not worried about my personnel count in the slightest! Why can\'t you keep the page counter at 784 or whatever it\'ll be when you do this and delete the first 700 pages?? Same with the post count???

It\'s actually (in microsoft terms) a feature of VBulletin and MySQL that very long threads take up a disproportionate amount of server resources in searches and other background indexing tasks.

Hopefully those posters on the thread will understand the need to keep things running smoothly but, in many ways, it\'ll be a shame to lose such a huge thread even though it really adds nothing material to MRC.

As i said Pete the tech side on this one is well beyond me as they have got a major software upgrade to do, so its down to Fish and co. But to my mind the smooth operation of the site would take preferance to page counts etc.

The two main points of the who wins thread was to make it the longest threaded post on ANY forum in the world and the second point was who post lasts wins.
So if you need server space I rather you deleted the whole thing rather then prune it because then you will lose its history and meaning.
So if you need the space guys just delete the whole thing, as I won\'t post on a watered down version.

How about just delete the whole thread. It is so far nearly 800 pages of crap and a complete waste of bandwidth.

Obviously the smooth running of the site comes first! All i\'m saying is when you decide to butcher the thread leave some record of the amount of pages and post logged up to the date you take action.
