Title: White smoke on startup...
Post by: Swanny_UK on November 17, 2007, 04:33:51 PM
Guys,

As you can probably tell from my previous \'coolant\' thread, I\'m new to rotaries, and slightly paranoid too!   The car was rebuild less than 12k and 21months ago by Pip @ WGT - its recently had its last 3k service.  When I purchased my FD, I knew the turbo\'s were tired, and that the Apexi ECU was mapped to use slightly lower boost on them, which is fine as its still making good power.

Ive got a set of replacement twins ready to go on as soon as I get time, but in the meantime I just want to theck that the white smoke I get on startup is what I think its likely to be - the worn turbo\'s.

Basically whent he cars been left for 2+ hours, and you start it, you get one big \'poof\' of smoke from the exhuast, say the size of a 1/3rd of an  FD and it dissipates straight away.  Its white smoke, but with a strong smell of oil, and looks like the smoke in this video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iPbIGPj-EGs) on yourtube.  At this point i\'ll reiterate that its only one cloud, and it dissapates straight away, as if its leaked while the engines cold.

So - do you think its likely to be the turbo\'s?

most FD\'s puff a little smoke on start up my good man, mine does it & most others I have seen do it too.... how long (time wise) does it somke for?? Mine does it for about 5 seconds, then you get the usual condensasion steam for a minuit or so if it\'s cold!!

It\'s probably burning off the injected oil (used to create better seal betwene the apex seals and rotor housings)

That\'s my guess anyway?

Mine does this too. If it\'s not losing any water and you\'re not getting the dreaded coolant buzzer then you\'ve probably got nothing to worry about. I find they tend to make the condensation steam a bit more than piston engines because the exhaust is so hot!

Its for a couple of seconds, and its like Ricco and Ianelvar have said, its as if its condensation, or something residual, not an \'active\' leak as such.  Well thats put my mind at rest a little!  I\'ll get closure when I swap the turbopack methinks!!

Thanks ever so much guys!

They all seem to smell of oil on startup, even when you\'re not coughing out a grey cloud like my FC is wont to do.

At this time of the year I would expect that it\'ll create a nice cloud of condensation water simply due to the temperatures.

i never heard of turbo\'s smoking on start up, so shouldn\'t be that?
A hot side leak creates white smoke but won\'t untill the exhaust get hurt enough to burn it. Charge side leak makes blue smoke but not sure how this is effected by the fact rotaries burn oil anyway.

My girl doesnt always smoke on startup, but when she does its usually a large pall of white smoke for around 4-5secs. Neighbours hate me!!!
