265/35 might fit the rims better and help protect the lip but 255 would be just as good, the fronts I would go for 235/40. This keeps the aspect ratio as close to original. I take it they are 9\'s and 8\'s for the width ? as that will make a difference.
see the link for tyre sizes in the wheels section, its a sticky for this reason.
thanks they are 8,s and 9,s just wont to make the back a bit wider.and wonted 225 so they dont rub
well the sizes i quoted will not rub but make sure the offsets are good and you will be ok.
235,40,18 front 265,35,18 rears on 8" and 9" is spot on
Try and keep the rolling radius as close to the 255x40x17 and you should be fine. The 35s just mean you have a bit more alloy than rim. The link will work out the percentage difference between original and stock.
Didn\'t think 265 was stocked as readily as 255 and 275 though.

jet tyres in pitsea can get them for next day 265/35/18 for £150 ea think ill go for 235 on the front then and not 225

the rear wheel is 9.5, did think of getting a 275 but didnt think it would go ,the car is on standard suspention as for the off set not sore fink its 35 i no the front is going to try it on the car in the morning before getting tyres fitted
