Title: All the air filter pipes, what are they?
Post by: RemarkLima on November 14, 2007, 10:32:11 PM
So there\'s a bunch of pipes that go from the air box, just wondered if they are what I thinkj they are.

The 2 that are ~70-75mm diameter (big ones) are the main inlets to the turbos, then there\'s the airpump.

But then there\'s the 2 little ones, what are these? Are they the stock BOV\'s? And letting them vent to atmos, is that a problem? As they shouldn\'t be sucking... Unless they\'re something else?

Thanks for the paitence ;)

Cheers,
Mark

2 main ones like you said are turbo inlets.
the one on the right of the box (if standing on front) simply vents out
the other 2 are for the Charge relief valve and BOV

The Charge relief and Charge Control (BOV) release their pressure into the airbox to keep their noise down. The other small pipe is to allow this air to vent out of the airbox.

So, as a temp solution only, I can just stick a filter on each of the large pipes and leave the rest to vent to atmos?

I\'ll stick a bit of cloth over them to stop any large bit\'s of cr@p getting in them, but principlly this should be fine?

As I say, it\'s just short term while I try and find what going on with my engine bay and need to get rid off the airbox for access.

Sorry, one more question, does anyone know the Internal Diameter of the 2 main intakes to the turbos?

I only had a rough go with a tape measure in the dark (standing on one leg, with one eye shut, patting my head while singing I\'m a little teapot) so my measurments may have been a little rough at best ;)

Cheers!

*whaaaa* sorry mate i promised id do that for you last night! and i was in the garage as well

I\'m not able to measure them again at work, but did some searchign on your behalf! apparently the K&N filters that fit have an external Diamiter of 64mm around the flange.

Cheers Leon :D Thanks for the searching, my search styles are somewhat lacking at the mo\'... Can\'t seem to find any useful information!

But that\'s very useful, so now know I need a 64mm filter.

Thats what the K&N ones are BUT they are for slipping over a metal pipe that replaces the stock... not slipping into the stock ones! just had that thought now.  so it makes that tit bit of info useless  (i think)

Not entirely true, the side outlet is for the air pump intake if still fitted...This connects to the airbox from underneath the airbox itself to draw in cool air...This is not filtered air either

Not really, means they are in the region of, so as long as they are close enough and tapered a bit I should be able to squeeze something in there!

How much you looking to pay for your somthign to shove in there, as i know they sell thing son fleabay wich are metal pipes and filters (not somthing id want to use tbh, but it may work out cheaper than the filters individualy):Thumbs-up

I think I\'ve seen then on fleaBay, works out at £30 or so but really it\'s only short term so I can try and find out what\'s going on then I\'ll sort out some decent induction and a cold air feed...

...But I think I\'ve found a local shop that sells something that should fit for £15 a shot, which will do just so I can start to see what\'s happening.

not entirely true either.

There is one small pipe that the air pump connects to, then there is another small pipe that connects to a hard pipe, that leads down to the bottom of the car.

This second pipe is the one for venting excess pressure from the airbox.

Now, unless the air pump can draw air through this hard pipe ONLY, then the air pump air IS filtered . :Giggle

We must be looking at different standard airbox set ups then, cos what i wrote is exactly how mine looks and is.....

I\'ll take some shots to clarify.

Why would there be excess pressure in the airbox??  It is ALWAYS gonna be at a negative pressure due to the intake.....

Yeah pics are a good idea, lets get some up.

I will have to think about the theory of why there can be positive pressure. .....

lets see now........

lets say you\'re really booting it, on high boost etc....., then you lift off - the pedal shuts really quickly. A massive build-up of boost builds up in the system !

At the same time, the manifold now sees vacuum, which opens the blow-off valve, and this allows the built up pressure to vent through the blow-off valve... into the airbox - positive pressure !

Ok just wondering if what your saying is that this pipe -
(http://www.minds.may.ie/~colly/SP_A0021.JPG)

should not actually be connected to anything?

^ Yes, that just sucks into the air pump and goes under the airbox :D

Is there a seperate compartment inside the airbox? What stops unfiltered air being sucked through this straight into the engine?

Yeah, I think there\'s a seperate chamber just for the air pump and it goes through the air box to cut down mooing noises.

Yep there is a seperate area, if you pull the pipe of you can see the mesh grill inside this little box in the box :mmmm

This pipe does not go to the airpump though, it just seems to attach to nothing

The pipe to the airpump and this pipe connect to the smaller chamber in the stock airbox. However im not sure if thats right! i thought this pipe in the picture just blew air rather than suck! To my understanding its the stock airbox\'s way of eliminating the "MOO" effect.:Thumbs-up
