Title: Car Covers..
Post by: Alison on November 14, 2007, 01:50:38 PM
Does anyone have one?

I\'m thinking of getting one for the winter while I\'m not using the Rex alot but I can\'t decide if it\'s a good idea or not.

Is there any risk of it scratching the paintwork if it\'s windy, or is there a risk of it freezing and sticking to the paint/windows etc..

I know it sounds silly, but I\'ve not had one before so I don\'t know these things!!
Let me know if you\'ve had bad experiences with them!

Fankoo....

i remember a couple of years back someone at rotorstock had a red car with BAD BAD BAD faded paint on his bonnet. i asked him if he parked his car in Africa he said that the car cover that was on top of it flapped about and took the paint off!!!!

Hmm, maybe not the best idea then.  That doesn\'t sound like good times.

Watching with intereste, as i haven\'t go ta garage and the FD will be my second car :(
Spotted this http://www.neweraparts.com/Default.aspx?tabid=54&txtSearch=cover&CategoryID=1&List=0&Level=1&ProductID=194 on the NE website - has anyone got any experience of these? seems like a good price compared to some :)
However, the fact it is \'exactly sized\', but will also fit cars with a big GT wing, confuses me a tad!

I always had a car cover on my 1st Gen. Was good to keep the frost off. It basically comes down to what you pay. mine was pricey, but never scratched the paint. Had to tie it down though for the wind (rope under the car), but it became a ritual to put the car to bed in the winter, and was great for mornings, pull cover off, and start it up, rather than having to sit and scrape off the frost on front windscreen!

Getting one for my FD, has a rear wing tho, so that may be a problem. They are a good investment.

Yes, same experience on a 1st generation, pricey but good with breathable soft material and a  securing cable (plastic coated) under the car. It\'s in the loft now since we\'ve got a good garage. Might use it again one day if we ever have builders in etc. Paid a fair bit more than that newera link is showing so I would say cheaper covers may be made of poorer quality material.

I have an FD car cover, cost me £250, it has a special fabric that lets the car breath and doesn\'t scratch the paintwork. Has \'click\' clips which means I can put it on in about a minute.

I normally keep a couple of cars under covers all year round...

I had a real Benny Hill moment a few days ago.  You know that there is always that time of the year when it gets very windy and the leaves all vanish overnight?

A couple of my cars seem to be parked down a wind tunnel.  Picture gust of wind and bye bye to car cover! :( Then picture, very shiny polished car, four flanelette sheets to get under aforementioned car cover and a gust everytime the final operation of car cover in place was to be performed! :wiggle Mmmnn! Not a happy bunny :(

Thankfully that only happens for a couple of days a year :)

Like the others have said a breathable cover is best! If your car has had any re-spraying done to it in the last 6 months (or any dubious re-sprays) I would think twice though.  If you get moisture trapped under the cover, then the paint can and will lift.

What I do for outside is cover the car with flanelette sheets (the car must be completely bone dry), then cover with the breathable cover and over the top another car cover with completely waterproof heavy duty polythene.

Some of the breathable covers say that you can put them on a wet car, but really that is a terrible idea :( The breathable covers are meant to allow water out but not in - but I wouldn\'t trust it.

Unless you\'ve got a really expensive cover I would also cover the car with flanelette sheets or thin blankets to stop it getting scratched underneath the car cover.

You need good straps too to fight the gales!  My polythene covers had bungee cord and clips fastening front and back.  The other good thing about the polythene covers is that if your breathable car cover is outside it will perish in the UV light whatever the makers may claim!  I use the cheaper cover on the outside to extend the life of my my more expensive breathables.

If the car is easily accessible by the public - you may decide against a car cover at all as they can be a magnet for thugs wanting a cheap laugh on the way home from the pub :(  Again you can buy or make straps and padlock them on under the car I guess...

Anyway, just my experiences! :)

I have one on mine and it sounds the same as Initial-Ds.  I have had it for around a year now and keep it on all the time and have no problems what so ever.  My only advice is do not stick it on a wet or dirty car.  Other than that its great and I wouldn\'t be without mine!  Keeps the car in mint condition...I got mine from RotaryArt.

I have one that i got from

http://www.hamiltonclassic.co.uk/

Great cover, its the out door 911 size that i got, they were really helpful.

I might be selling it soon as have just sold the rex, but it will need a bit of a clean/wash before i do.

I have that cover, its a good cover but due to false advertising, its not by Fujita Engineering or Mazda, or even the same as in the picture. Its a good cover nonetheless though! Fits well! I\'ll try to get a pic sorted for you! ;)
